Queen - Queen Rock Montreal. Dble CD.
(Label: Parlophone Records, Cat.No: 504 0472)

Click for large image When Queen returned for the fourth time to Montreal’s 18,000 seater Forum in November 198, the group had spent the best part of two years on the road. Straight after their triumphant Latin American tours, the worldwide success of The Game album and their recent Greatest Hits volume one, the group were on peak form and still in their full pomp (despite the more conservative haircuts). This tour features arguably Freddie's greatest vocal performances, two years on the road had honed his voice and his physical form into a much more powerful shape. Don't think that this is just another 80's era concert album, there is still classics like: "Keep Yourself Alive", "I'm In Love With My Car", "Sheer Heart Attack" and "Let Me Entertain You", as well as Roger Taylor's timpani solo! A real top draw live performance, showing a band on the cusp of stadium superstardom.

Bee Gees - Greatest (Mini Vinyl Replica Sleeve). Dble CD.
(Label: RHINO TV / WARNERS / CINRAM, Cat.No: 8122799507)

Click for large image 2007 marks the 30th anniversary of Saturday Night Fever and the monumental resurgence of one of the greatest pop acts of the 60's and early 70's. This twenty track double CD concentrates on the Disco era of their career: "Tragedy", "How Deep Is Your Love" and "More Than A Woman."

Bee Gees - Greatest. Dble CD.
(Label: RHINO TV / WARNERS / CINRAM, Cat.No: 8122799637)

Click for large image 2007 marks the 30th anniversary of Saturday Night Fever and the monumental resurgence of one of the greatest pop acts of the 60's and early 70's. This twenty six track CD concentrates on the Disco era of their career: "Tragedy", "How Deep Is Your Love" and "More Than A Woman." Bonus material includes the recorded debut of the previously unissued song "Warm Ride", the rare 12", promo-only version of "Stayin' Alive" and four new remixes of classic tracks.

Marvin Gaye - Best Of Live!. Dble CD.
(Label: Music Club, Cat.No: MCCD626)

Click for large image Backed by a seventeen member backing band, this set recorded at the legendary Montreux Jazz Festival in 1980 is a treat. Performed shortly before his commercial comeback single "Sexual Healing", this is a setlist dominated by his 70's soul period, although there are still moments of his earlier Motown persona to please all of his fans. Seventeen tracks, including: "Inner City Blues (Make Me Wanna Holler)", "Got To Give it up" and "Let's Get It On" and "Distant Lover",

New York Sound Volume 2 - Various. CD.
(Label: BGP, Cat.No: CDBGPD 188)

Click for large image Second edition of the compilation embracing the sounds coming out of the five boroughs of New York in the late 70's. Ten rare and influential 12-inch mixes from the Spring and Vanguard label are gathered here, documenting the first jumps into hip hop including the first time the music was put together by New York funksters the Fatback Band with "King Tim III (Personality Jock)", as well as the response of Millie Jackson who appears with the rowdy "Had To Say It" available on CD for the first time in its full 12 inch mix. Also included is a single by Spectrum City, the first CD release of a track by an act that would become Public Enemy featuring the distinct voice of Chuck D. This collection is packed with sought after numbers that best represents the evolving, diverse sounds of the time.

Counter Culture 76- Rough Trade Shops - Various. CD.
(Label: V2, Cat.No: VVR1040762)

Click for large image Looking Back, 1976 was an Intake of Breath, a Moment Before the Explosion of Punk and New Wave that Continues to Reverberate. Alongside Some of the Great Music of the Time, in this Collection We also have the Sonic Evidence of the Growing Opposition to the Establishment - the 60's Psyche and Folk Influence is Here in the Form of the Flamin' Groovies and the Mcgariggle Sisters, but Garage Rock is Evolving Into Something Altogether More Spiky with the Saints and Radio Birdman, While the Longstanding Avant Garde and Art Rock Movements, Epitomised Here by the Penguin Cafe Orchestra and Ivor Cutler, Sit a Little Uncomfortably Next to the Carefree Disco of Candi Staton and Bootsy's Rubber Funk. A truly eclectic mix.

Tina Charles - I Love To Love (plus). CD.
(Label: RPM, Cat.No: RPM 324)

Click for large image Scoring 4 UK single hits in 1976, including the number one "I Love To Love", this is the album that came out in the same year. Perhaps a little unusual, but the eight bonus tracks that make up this expanded edition come at the start of this album; it has been sequenced in chronological order and the tracks stem from her days as a session singer and fledgling solo artist (the earliest tracks stretching back to 1969 when she was only fifteen). Includes "Rich Girl", a 1975 Disco tune she that Tina was brought to sing lead vocals but was released (and mimed) by the group 5000 Voltts. Other highlights chart the quick revolution in her sound from pure pop to early disco and finally some chart recognition. Fourteen tracks in all.

Bootsy Collins - Christmas Is 4 Ever. CD.
(Label: Evangeline, Cat.No: GEL4104)

Click for large image The Funk legend returns with a brand new album based around the festive season. Featuring guests Snoop Dogg, Bobby Womack and Blackbyrd McNight and Bernie Worrell, Collins spices up nine classic Christmas numbers and introduces four new ones to the mix. Don't worry, it really isn't your typical Christmas album but gold old fashioned Funk in the style that only Bootsy knows how to make.

Chrome Hoof - Beyond Zade (single). 12".
(Label: Rise Above Records, Cat.No: RISEMLP092)

Click for large image Three track single from a new Prog / Kraut band that dabbles in Disco- Grind! A hit on the underground scene, they are quickly becoming a cult hit for their wild stage shows (they have supported Sunn 0))) Add N To X). These three tracks are here to best get across the many sides to their unique Prog Freak out sound: the tension building "Krunching Down", calm after the storm "Year Ram" and the celebratory "Mad Air Punch." Featuring Leo Smee, the long term bass player of British Doomsters Cathedral among their members. A group that will turn heads.

Donald Austin - Crazy Legs. CD.
(Label: Westbound, Cat.No: CDHP 016)

Click for large image Surprise and quirky East coast hit of '73 "Crazy Legs" leads off this original Eastbound in demand slice of vinyl cut in Memphis. Previously only available on vinyl, this is packaged in a cardboard facsimile of the LP sleeve. Thirteen tracks, including: "Do Me Right", "Let The Woman Be The Boss", "You Want It, You Got It" and "Side Saddle."

King Errisson - Magic Man / LA Bound. CD.
(Label: Westbound, Cat.No: CDSEWD 144)

Click for large image The Bahamians percussionist's two mid '70's albums recorded for the Westbound label together on one CD; their very first reissue. A heady mix of percussive proto-Disco grooves and sampletastic drum brakes. The fourteen tracks mix funky disco originals with cover versions. Booklet features indepth liner notes and an interview with Errison.

Marvin Gaye - The Master: 1961 - 1984. 4-CD Box Set.
(Label: UM3, Cat.No: 9841196)

Click for large image Ninety track whole career retrospective anthology spread over four discs. Embracing his early Motown hit parade sound, the many collaborations with female contemporaries, his self aware Soul / Funk to his latter day Disco efforts, this is an essential overview of the great man. Includes a selection of his best B-sides and eighteen previously unreleased tracks from throughout his career. Comes with details annotations and illustrations.

Queen - Hot Space. CD.
(Label: Parlophone Records, Cat.No: CDP7894972)

Click for large image Still a shock to the system, this is where one of the bravest Rock groups of the era decided to go out and out Disco in 1982. Their one flop album out of a twenty year (and counting if you include the Paul Rodgers led tour and planned recording sessions) career, it contains only one song that would make it onto Greatest Hits II. Happily it is one of their most brilliant tracks, the emotive "Under Pressure" featuring David Bowie. Definitely not as bad as originally thought, the skillful songwriting abilities are still there, something that would never leave them, but they are buried under layerss of production that no Queen would ever expect to hear on one of their records. Considering the direction of their '80's albums, this is hugely important in the turn around for the band and it does include some real forgotten gems like "Las Palabras De Amor (The Words Of Love)", "Life Is Real" and "Action This Day."

Bee Gees - One Night Only / The Official Story Of The Bee Gees. dbl DVD.
(Label: Eagle, Cat.No: EREDV525)

Click for large image 1997 live TV special recorded in Las Vegas. A celebratory night that has quite an unusual set list. As well as the expected hits, it includes a number of songs they wrote for other artists such as "Islands In The Stream", "Guilty", "Heartbreaker." Tracing their whole career through these marvellous moments, it simply demands respect. This is a hard working, well rehearsed group with a brilliant backlog of songs to choose from. The second disc is a two hour collection of interviews (old and new) charting their long career. With the inclusion of private photos, archive footage and concert performances, it is the ultimate biography of the group, leaving no part of their time in the charts unexplored, good or bad (the death of their brother, the dreaded Sgt. Pepper movie.) Highly recommended for serious Bee Gee fans and anyone wanting to know more about the group.
