Beach Boys - 15 Big Ones / Love You. CD. (Capitol Records - 5279452)

Two albums from 1976 and 1977 that marked the return of Brian Wilson to the band. 'Love You' is Brian's favourite album and it's easy to see why. Beach Boys - Endless Harmony. CD.

This is an excellent collection of unreleased tracks taken from the recent documentary and is broken up with the addition of some stereo mixes of master tracks. Quality live tracks are included here, including a corking version of 'Darlin' on which Carl gives a superlative vocal performance. A demo of 'Heroes And Villains' is interesting to hear for a section called 'Barnyard' - yet another missing piece in the 'Smile' jigsaw. 'Kiss Me Baby' has been given a stereo remix that is so crystal clear in terms of sound quality it makes you wish all their sounds were given similar treatment. 21 of the 23 music tracks (two brief radio promos are also included) here are previously unreleased.

Beach Boys - Party! / Stack-O-Tracks. CD. (Capitol Records - 5316412)

Perhaps the most odd ball of the Beach boy's releases were these two albums. Party (1965) is a studio "party" with the band singing various good time songs in the company of friends. Beach Boys - Smile. LP. (Sea Of Tunes - LP001)

Well, an exact repro cover wise of this long lost classic that contain's some of it's glory. This version however does not contain the lengthy "Good Vibrations" although it does contain exquisitely beautiful passages,("Cabin Essence") great ensemble singing,("Surf's Up") and brilliant orchestral pop instrumentation("Child is Father of the Man") on these outtakes. It's a real shame Brian never shaped the whole thing into the pop masterpiece that would have been both brilliant and commercial. Very limited copies available.

Superb vinly re-issue of their 1967 psych album. Which was supposed to take the innovations of 'Pet Sounds' to even grander heights, but never quite made it. Low-key psychedelic quirkiness, with abundant fine harmonies and unusual arrangements. Still as classy now as thirty years ago.

Beach Boys - Smiley Smile + Wild Honey. CD. (Capitol Records - 5318622)

"Smiley Smile" (1967) is one of the most talked about '60's albums ever made. Originally titled Smile and intended as a psychedelic creation that would rival The Beatles musical experiments, it was never completed. Brian Wilson flipped out on LSD during the recording and "Smiley Smile" was effectively the surviving remains. However, it's still a stunning record and includes not only the weird and legendary "Good Vibrations" but also "Heroes and Villains" "Wind Chimes" and "Vegetables"(featuring Paul McCartney). This also features the follow up album "Wild Honey" (1968) a batch of previously unreleased Smile sessions, a thick information packed booklet and HDCD re-mastered sound! Wow!

Beach Boys - Sunflower + Surf's Up. CD. (Capitol Records - 5256922)

The first two albums of the '70's by The Beach Boys were among their finest. At the forefront of the anti-war movement, informed by late '60's psychedelia and armed with the advanced studio techniques of the time the band created sonic hymns of timeless beauty. Sunflower (1970) is a happy breezy album with "Cool, Cool Water" and "Add Some Music" being special highlights. Surfs Up (1971) featues the title track left over from the Smile sessions as well as the weird "Feel Flows" and the achingly sad "'Til I Die". Truly beautiful creations remastered and lovingly packaged with a thick booklet.

Beach Boys - In Concert. CD. (Capitol Records - 5259332)

Live album recorded over their '72-'73 tour. By this point, Brian had long since retired from touring duties (and general sanity), leaving his brother Carl to take charge. His decision to harden up the groups sound and add additional members was a masterstroke. They perform twenty one hits here, the best versions compiled from various nights on their world tour. A great document of Brians writing legacy on the band and Carls will to keep them as a relevant act. Includes: "Good Vibrations", "Heroes And Villains", "Surfin' USA" and "Sloop John B."

Beach Boys - M.I.U./L.A.. CD. (Emi Gold - 5279502)

Two albums on one disk. The Boys final releases in the '70s mark a return to form. Although the first album is based in the Maharishi International University in Fairfield, Iowa, there is no random East meets West arrangements but their usual brand of well executed pop. The two albums are filled with oddities and highlights, the eleven minute Disco reworking of "Here Comes The Night", a couple of '50's cover versions and "My Diane", one of Carl Wilsons best emotive vocal workouts. Obviously not in the same league as Pet Sounds, largely because that would be impossible, these twenty two tracks should not be undervalued. Including: "Goin' South", "Wontcha Come Out Tonight", "Angel Come Home" and "Come Go With Me."
