Beatles - Beatles (The White Album). Dble LP. (Apple - PCS7067)

Some call it the group's greatest achievement, some are less inclined to engage with the more experimental course that the band seemed to have taken after their full-on psychedelic excursions. In many ways, this is a tribute piece to artists from the current era and before, such as the nod to the Beach Boys that is 'Back In The USSR'. Incredibly varied yet wholly consistent, the sheer simple beauty of songs like 'Blackbird' are rigidly juxtaposed with avant-garde touches like 'Revolution 9' (thanks Yoko). Included are the original posters and lyric sheet. As an aside, George wrote the song "Savoy Truffle" after recording "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" with Eric Clapton. Clapton was consuming vast amounts of chocolate (being a junkie at the time) and preferred a particular brand ( Good News - made by Nestle) -- there is a line in the song "yes, you know it's Good News".Anyway this vinyl repro comes complete with the poster insert and the famous 4 coloured photos.

Beatles - Legend Featuring The Beatles. DVD. (Baker Street - STPDVDNT1)

Fascinating DVD giving rare insights into the beginnings of the most influential and popular band in the whole history of popular music- no, not the Morton Fraser Harmonica Gang or Neville Wanker And the Punters, one is of course talking about the Beatles, the Fab Four themselves. This documentary takes you back to late 50s/early 60s Liverpool and Hamburg, and interviews with their colleagues Tony Sheridan and Ray Young: through the 60s and the filming of their first movies with actor Victor Spinetti, also interviewed here: news footage of the soon-to-be-regretted OBE ceremony, and the infamous 'Beatle Burning' of 1966 that took place as a kneejerk dimwitted reaction to not listening properly to what Lennon said on US radio. Detailed footage is also included of the recent tour by Sheridan, Young and Howie Casey as the Beat Brothers, who in 2004 toured Europe and gave people a second taste of that old Star Club atmosphere: showing once again that the legacy of the band lives on in so may unexpected ways. No band or musician, with the exception of Elvis Presley ever had or will have the same impact that the Beatles had: this DVD tells you exactly what it was like to be there at the time, from the mouths of those who were. Fab.

Beatles - Rubber Soul. LP. (EMI - PCS3075)

Classic mid-career album that finds the Beatles in a post-mop top, proto psychedelic mood. Exquisite songwriting and the introduction of such elements as sitar ('Norwegian Wood') and harmonium ('The Word'), continuing the imaginative arrangements on the Help! Album. Lyrically, they took a vast step forward, a new maturity and imaginative subjects beyond just love themes started to appear. I imagine smoking a serious amount of Pot helped expand their horizons. Beautiful, flowing song structures, lush arrangements and trademark harmonies make this an essential part of anyone's collection.

Beatles - 1. CD. (Parlophone Records - 5299702)

Twenty seven track collection of all of The Beatles US and UK number 1 singles. In chronological order, this is the first single CD release where you can clearly see the groups astronomical leap in song writing, arranging, producing and the general ambition that can exist on Pop music. Comparing their beat beginnings of "Love Me Do" to their early forays in psychedelia with "Penny Lane", it really feels like a completely different group of individuals with a different producer in a different studio… but it isn't! A fascinating document of the decade and in the history of recording music as well as the band itself. If you don't own all of these songs then you should be ashamed. Includes: "Eleanor Rigby", "The Ballad Of John And Yoko", "We Can Work It Out." and "She Loves You."

Beatles - A Hard Days Night. CD. (Parlophone Records - CDP7464372)

Third album from the greatest Pop band ever. This is their first completely self written album (all thirteen tracks are Lennon / McCartney despite vocal contributions from Harrison) and is an absolute stormer of a set. Rarely again would they sound so positive and so purely Pop and exuberant again. From the mighty title track opener to the wonderfully soulfull "I'll Be Back" closer this album never lets up. This album sees the first real example of the pure McCartney ballad: "And I Love Her." Despite his contributions, this is really Lennon's album, a cocky and brash set that only occasionally switches to the ballad (the sublime "If I Fell" and "I'll Cry Instead"), this feels like indestructable Pop. Beatles - Anthology 1. 3-LP. (Parlophone Records - PCSP727)

First of three collections that bring together rare and unreleased material from the EMI vaults. This sixty track double concentrates on the very early days of the Beatles, featuring home recordings, pre Ringo recordings with Pete Best, "My Bonnie", the Decca audition tape, live appearances on the Ed Sullivan Show, out takes, alternate album sessions, extracts from interviews with the Beatles and Brian Epstein and the "Threetles" single "Free As A Bird." the first disc is great for historical reasons, hearing Lennon and McCartney mucking around at home with general sing ideas, the Decca tapes, anything with Pete Best and so on. It's on the second and third LPs that things really happen, already there are signs of their genius: the alternate versions of "Eight Days A Week" and "I'll Be Back", effortlessly changing rhythm and style in a quest for the correct way to present it on the finished album. This adventurous spirit is the very essence of the Beatles and is a genuine pleasure to hear. For all serious Beatles fans.

Beatles - Anthology 2. 3-LP. (Parlophone Records - PCSP728)

Second collection of unreleased material from the EMI vaults. This time we see the confident side of the Beatles from '65 to '67. By now massive worldwide stars, they are given the time they need in the studio (and then some) to experiment and develop their talent. Tellingly the first disk starts with some alternative versions and rehearsals of Help material and general pop songs they would give away to other artists, suddenly when the Rubber Soul and Revolver sessions begin we are in a whole new territory. Alternative versions of "Tomorrow Never Knows", "I'm Looking Through You" and "I'm Only Sleeping" are thrilling to the ear, as are the earlier Blackpool live performances from '65. It is a pleasure to hear digitally remastered live material from the mid sixties as there is little of it around. LPs two and three takes another shift for the Sgt. Pepper and Magical Mystery Tour sessions. These tracks give us a view into the recording method at that time, through demo versions, live run throughs and re editied highlights from the sessions made especially for the anthology series. Obviously the "Strawberry Fields Forever" versions are a joy, as is the extended version of the barmy B-side "You Know My Name (Look Up The Number.)" This is a band really reaching for the stars and it is a pleasure to be allowed to hear.

Beatles - Anthology 3. 3-LP. (Parlophone Records - PCSP729)

The final anthology, charting The White Album , Let It Be and Abbey Road sessions. A fascinating and surprisingly painless view of good friends slowly hating each other and loosing a general focus for the Beatles. It begins in glorious fashion with the Esher Demos and the first few weeks recording. Alternate and demo versions of "Helter Skelter", "Glass Onion", "Ob-La-Di Ob-La-Da" are a real joy to hear, the group proving that when all of them focus on a goal, miracles can still happen. Historically it's good to have "What's The New Mary Jane", Harrisons "Not Guilty" and the wonderful interplay between Lennon and McCartney on the first take of "Julia." Side two of LP two and the whole of the third LP highlights the focus fading over the near identical takes off the Let It Be album and the sudden reprieve of Abbey Road. George Harrison takes centre stage with his demos of the glorius "Something", "Old Brown Shoe" and "All Things Must Pass." It is a fine explanation of the state of the group that All Things Must Pass was repeatedly rejected by the band despite being fantastic. Includes the near perfect a cappella version of "Because." This is a fitting if uncomfortable end to their superb career, Anthology 3 makes you feel priviledged to be allowed behind the myth and legend of the demise of the Beatles.

Beatles - Anthology 3. Dble CD. (Parlophone Records - CDPCSP729)

Historically it's good to have the bizarre "What's The New Mary Jane", Harrisons "Not Guilty" and the wonderful interplay between Lennon and McCartney on the first take of "Julia." CD 2 highlights the focus fading over the near identical takes off the Let It Be album and the sudden reprieve of Abbey Road. George Harrison takes centre stage with his demos of the glorius "Something", "Old Brown Shoe" and "All Things Must Pass." It is a fine explanation of the state of the group that All Things Must Pass was repeatedly rejected by the band despite being fantastic. Includes the near perfect a cappella version of "Because"; a fitting if uncomfortable end to their superb career, Anthology 3 makes you feel priviledged to be allowed behind the myth and legend of the demise of the Beatles.

Beatles - Beatles For Sale. CD. (Parlophone Records - CDP7464382)

The Beatles fourth album, their second in 1964. Although only featuring eight Lennon/McCartney originals (the first indication of their wearying schedule effecting their music), the selected covers are all excellent. The originals are notably down beat and soulful, this slower pace would eventually pave the way for the countrified, acoustic sound and druggy vibe of Rubber Soul. An incredible change from the upbeat, poppy "Hard Days Night" released earlier that year, the cover versions are all deliberately high tempo rock n rollers to increase the pace for the teeny bopper audience. Soon they wouldn't feel the need to cater for their young audience and would really go off in their own direction. Includes: "Baby's In Black", "I'm A Loser", "I Don't Want T spoil The Party."

Beatles - Magical Mystery Tour. CD. (Parlophone Records - CDP7480622)

Soundtrack to the BBC TV movie of the same name, released in '67. Six track EP expanded with five tracks from the era not included on Sgt. Pepper. This is the US release that has now become a standard eleven album worldwide. This John Lennon is quoted as saying it is his favourite Beatles album due to it being so weird and you can't help but agree. This is the end of the road for their psychedelic period, largely due to the public's and the press' cold reaction to the film, the lengthy time needed to create the tracks and the fact that they rarely stood still during their seven year recording period. At least they left it on a bizarre high, combining "Strawberry Fields Forever" and "Penny Lane" with "I Am The Walrus" and "Your Mother Should Know" creates quite a poptastic album, an album filled with ideas, rich melodies, arrangements and the very odd. Next stop, the White Album!

Beatles - Past Masters Volume 1. CD. (Parlophone Records - CDP7900432)

Eighteen track random collection of The Beatles circa '62-'65. Largely a collection of B-Sides you couldn't get on CD when it was first released in the '80's, it also includes the two German spoken records they did, "Love Me Do" with Alan White on drums and the odd EP track. A useful CD to own if you don't have "This Boy", "I'm Down" or "She's A Woman" as they are essential recordings. A fine album that captures the other side of the Fab Four.

A great way to own some real obscure nmbers like "You Know My Name (Look Up The Number)." A Fine collection that captures the other side of the post Fab Four.

Beatles - Revolver. CD. (Parlophone Records - CDP7464412)

Quite possibly the best album of their brilliant career. Having the ability to meld together extreme sonic experimentation, acid heavy guitars, pure pop melodies, ghostly harmonies, eastern drones and Motown infuences while at the same time creating new studio techniques and still being able to create a cohesive album really is incredible. Lets not talk about Ringo's tone deaf vocal assault on "Yelow Submarine" and focus on the many highlights, the three part harmony on "I Want To Tell You", the guitar solo on "Taxman", Lennon's and Harrison's guitar duel on "And Your Bird Can Sing", the whole of "Tomorrow Never Knows." Utter genius, taking the simple pop formula and creating this! Everyone who likes music should own this.

Beatles - Rubber Soul. CD. (Parlophone Records - CDP7464402)

Beatles - Singles Collection. 20-CD Set. (Parlophone Records - CDBSCP1)

All of the Beatles singles (A's and B's) packaged individually in replica card sleeves. Contained in a flip top box. This collection charts the rise of the Fab Four's rhythm and blues beginnings, turning into perfect pop, Psychedelia, experimentation and rock. Along the way they managed to produce numerous truly brilliant pop moments that are legendary in the history of popular music. They changed everyones perceptions of what a pop single could be: from "She Love You", "Eleanor Rigby", "Strawberry Fields Forever", "Hey Jude" to "Come Together", utterly brilliant songs that are touched with genius. Useful for collectors who don't have all of their excellent B-sides.

Extremely famous compilation of album tracks and singles from the Fab Four in their first four years of recording. Twenty six tracks covering their rhythm and blues, pure pop and early acid period, including some real classics: "Yesterday", "In My Life", "All My Loving" and "I Feel Fine." An interesting selection that quickly moves through their upbeat pop songs and into their more introspective numbers of the Help! and Rubber Soul period. This is the collection that got many people born too late to enjoy their original chart flourish got into the group. It effectively serves as an advert for the next volume, tempting you with the fact that something fascinating is going on in the songwriters heads and the music is taking a quantum leap forward.

Second edition of the famous compilation, charting their last three years. Beatles - Beatles (complete Album Collection). 15-CD Set. (Parlophone Records - CDS7913022)

The complete album releases by the Beatles (plus Past Masters 1 & 2.) Two hundred and twenty six tracks of genius pop / rock / psychedelic music. Purists may want to look away now as EMI have decided to include Yellow Submarine tracks; this may not sound bad but rather than giving them their own CD, they have decided to stick them on the second disk of the White Album, changing the track listing rather than just placing them at the end of the album! Apart from this moment of pure madness, this is a worthwhile collection for serious colectors. Housed in an black oak finish oak wood box with a roll top lid. First four albums reproduced in Mono.

Beatles - Beatles (White Album). Dble CD. (Apple - CDS7464438)

Booklet includes the original posters and lyric sheet. As an aside, George wrote the song "Savoy Truffle" after recording "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" with Eric Clapton. Clapton was consuming vast amounts of chocolates (being a junkie at the time) and preferred a particular brand ( Good News - made by Nestle) - they were a variety box of chocolate candies - there is a line in the song "yes, you know it's Good News".

Beatles - Help!. CD. (Parlophone Records - CDP7464392)

1965 soundtrack to the Beatles second film. Notably an album very different from its predecessor Beatles For Sale, this is the group stepping away from their rock past and a slower, druggy sound emerges. Although Rubber Soul is considered the pot album, no one can deny the changing pace and vocal performances on the singles: "Ticket To Ride" and the title track. This album also sees a maturing lyrical style and a flourishing use of unusual arrangements away from the two guitars, bass and drums routine; electric piano, flutes and a string section on the immortal "Yesterday" show a group pushing their sound on. "Dizzy Miss Lizzy" is the only track that feels out of place, it feels like already they have moved past their rock n roll past onto new horizons. A fine transition album, only hinting at the briliance to follow.

Beatles - Let It Be. CD. (Parlophone Records - CDP7464472)

The troubled 1969 Get Back sessions quickly fell apart and looked like a lost cause. With the "help" of Phil Spector the album eventually ended up getting released in mid 1970, heavily re-edited and re- arranged. This is of course all stuff of legend, the numerous talking points are all here to examine once again: the strings and choir on "The Long And Winding Road", the brief snippets of muck-about tracks and Lennon's snide remark before "Let It Be", the heavy re-editing of "I, Me, Mine." After all of this, although certainly a weak album by Beatles standards, it still has some magical tracks: "Get Back", the title track, "Two Of Us" and "I've Got A Feeling." This album becomes even more fascinating with the release of the …Naked version, without Spector's embellishments.

Beatles - Please Please Me. CD. (Parlophone Records - CDP7464352)

This is where it all started, the 1963 debut from The Fab Four. Famously recorded in a day, this is one of the rawer production jobs that George Martin lent to The Beatles sound, an interesting comparison to their highly polished Abbey Road album six short years later. Already the Lennon / McCartney partnership was producing classics when it was still unusual for artists to write their own songs: "I Saw Her Standing There", "Do You Want To Know A Secret?" the title track and "There's A Place." Certainly lacking the excitable pace of With The Beatles, the record gains much by their inexperience in the studio and youthful optimism. The recording conditions and their by-now highly professional attitude to playing live give it an unintentional intensity that really helps make this essential. In many ways it is an album of very strong, confident singles followed by unconventional cover tracks that helped the mstand out from the crowd. A thrilling listen into a fledgling Beat groups first steps.
