Some call it the group's greatest achievement, some are less inclined to engage with the more experimental course that the band seemed to have taken after their full-on psychedelic excursions. In many ways, this is a tribute piece to artists from the current era and before, such as the nod to the Beach Boys that is 'Back In The USSR'. Historically it's good to have "What's The New Mary Jane", Harrisons "Not Guilty" and the wonderful interplay between Lennon and McCartney on the first take of "Julia." Side two of LP two and the whole of the third LP highlights the focus fading over the near identical takes off the Let It Be album and the sudden reprieve of Abbey Road. George Harrison takes centre stage with his demos of the glorius "Something", "Old Brown Shoe" and "All Things Must Pass." It is a fine explanation of the state of the group that All Things Must Pass was repeatedly rejected by the band despite being fantastic. Includes the near perfect a cappella version of "Because." This is a fitting if uncomfortable end to their superb career, Anthology 3 makes you feel priviledged to be allowed behind the myth and legend of the demise of the Beatles.

Quite possibly the best album of their brilliant career. Having the ability to meld together extreme sonic experimentation, acid heavy guitars, pure pop melodies, ghostly harmonies, eastern drones and Motown infuences while at the same time creating new studio techniques and still being able to create a cohesive album really is incredible. Lets not talk about Ringo's tone deaf vocal assault on "Yelow Submarine" and focus on the many highlights, the three part harmony on "I Want To Tell You", the guitar solo on "Taxman", Lennon's and Harrison's guitar duel on "And Your Bird Can Sing", the whole of "Tomorrow Never Knows." Quite possibly the best album of their brilliant career. Having the ability to meld together extreme sonic experimentation, acid heavy guitars, pure pop melodies, ghostly harmonies, eastern drones and Motown infuences while at the same time creating new studio techniques and still being able to create a cohesive album really is incredible. Lets not talk about Ringo's tone deaf vocal assault on "Yelow Submarine" and focus on the many highlights, the three part harmony on "I Want To Tell You", the guitar solo on "Taxman", Lennon's and Harrison's guitar duel on "And Your Bird Can Sing", the whole of "Tomorrow Never Knows." Exquisite songwriting and the introduction of such elements as sitar ('Norwegian Wood') and harmonium ('The Word'), continuing the imaginative arrangements on the Help! Album. Lyrically, they took a vast step forward, a new maturity and imaginative subjects beyond just love themes started to appear. I imagine smoking a serious amount of Pot helped expand their horizons. Some call it the group's greatest achievement, some are less inclined to engage with the more experimental course that the band seemed to have taken after their full-on psychedelic excursions. In many ways, this is a tribute piece to artists from the current era and before, such as the nod to the Beach Boys that is 'Back In The USSR'. Incredibly varied yet wholly consistent, the sheer simple beauty of songs like 'Blackbird' are rigidly juxtaposed with avant-garde touches like 'Revolution 9' (thanks Yoko). Clapton was consuming vast amounts of chocolates (being a junkie at the time) and preferred a particular brand ( Good News - made by Nestle) - they were a variety box of chocolate candies - there is a line in the song "yes, you know it's Good News".
