Dark and mysterious with biting guitar, cryptic lyrics, swirling keyboards and phased effects the 1972 debut by Blue Öyster Cult is a classic US album, and the missing link betwixt the garage rock of the MC5 and stadium metal. Aside from the songtitltes themselves ('She's As Beautiful As A Foot' 'I'm On The Lamb But I Ain't No Sheep' 'Before The Kiss A Redcap') the songs are superb, and in the case of 'Redeemed' and 'Then Came The Last Days Of May' head and shoulders above what any other American hard rock act at the time had achieved. Blue Oyster Cult - Don't Fear The Reaper. CD. (Collectables - COLCD9485) Budget and somewhat confusingly-compiled overview of some of the best works of this legendary US 'thinking man's metal' band. The track from which the title of this compilation is taken is still their best known work, but many other highlights are included here such as 'Career Of Evil' from their masterpiece "Secret Treaties", the touching ballad 'In Thee', the AOR classic 'Burning For You', the proto-speed metal 'The Red And The Black' and a surprising FOUR inclusions from the 'Spectres' album, among which are the bludgeoning 'Godzilla' (later recorded by Fu Manchu) and the Ian Hunter-penned (boy does it show, too) 'Going Thru The Motions'.

Blue Oyster Cult - Heaven Forbid. CD. (Sanctuary Records - SANCD024) One of the true icons of Hard Rock Music reformed in 1998 and these were the results- an album that modernised their hard/progressive/occult rock style whilst remaining unmistakably BOC. Not a stone classic in the vein of 'Secret Treaties' or 'Fire Of Unknown Origin' but five tracks- 'Live For Me' 'X Ray Eyes' 'Harvest Moon' (all sung by Buck Dharma) and Eric Bloom's pummelling, thrashing Metal assault on 'See You In Black' and 'Power Underneath Despair' are strong enough to go head to head wth the best of their output. Also contains a reworked acoustic version of 'In Thee'.

Blue Oyster Cult - Secret Treaties. CD. (Columbia Legacy - 502236 2) The band's third album from 1974 is regarded by many as their best. Superb hard rock that has a garage feel featuring swirling keyboards and rippling wah-wah guitar work as well as wild driving rhythms and spacious musical interplay. Disturbing titles such as Harvester Of Eyes and Flaming Telepaths were to increase the bands Black Magic reputation, whilst 'Astronomy' which features possibly the most cyrptic lyric the band ever penned ('And don't forget my dog, it's fixed inconsequent') is still yet to be explained. This remastered edition contains full sleeve notes and five bonus tracks…

Blue Oyster Cult - Tales Of The Psychic Wars. Dble LP. (Fruit Tree - FT815) BÖC captured live in New York City in 1982 during the 'Fire Of Unknown Origin' tour. Contains great versions of "Dr Music", "Burnin' For You", "Joan Crawford", "Godzilla" and (of course) "Don't Fear The Reaper" as well as covers of "Born To Be Wild" and "Roadhouse Blues". Pressed on 180 gram vinyl and complete in gatefold sleeve.

Blue Oyster Cult - Tyranny And Mutation. CD. (Columbia Legacy - 502235 2) The second of the black and white trilogy (known as such due to the artwork) this BÖC album from 1973 carries on from where the last left off with hard rock riffing and weird occult imagery. Thanks to the latter, they became known as the US Black Sabbath, although musically there is no similarity. Folk rock ('Wings Wetted Down') and bubblegum harrnonies ('Quicklime Girl') often enter the fray, although when they were heavy, as on 'Hot Rails To Hell' or '7 Screaming Dizbusters', they were HEAV- Y. Meanwhile, Albert Bouchard was proving himself the world's most underrated drummer on the rolling, tumbling 'Teen Archer'. This remastered CD includes four bonus tracks, and comes with detailed booklet notes…

Blue Oyster Cult - Tyranny Mutation / Secret Treaties (deluxe). Dble CD. Two classic Oyster Cult album housed in a deluxe leather Digi pack. The two albums stem from their early '70's period (their second and third long players), arguably their peak. Hard rock, mixed with pop harmonies, folk and garage touches as well as the continuation of occult references all feature on this excellent set. This seventeen track double CD set includes extensive liner notes photos and lyrics.
