Oliver (for 'twas he) was of course known for his rendition of the title track (which came from the hit show 'Hair') but also recorded many folk rock and country rock ballads, songs by Rod McKuen ('Jean' being a particular favourite) and his own compositions such as 'Young Birds Fly' and 'Buddy' show the kind of music he wanted to create: complex, orchestrated, sometimes dramatic adult folk-pop similar to that of Bob Lind. There are also tracks here that result from his collaborations with Lesley Gore, which should have reached a larger audience had the world taken him more seriously. Bessie Smith - Nobody Knows You When You're Down And Out. CD. (Label: Rev Ola, Cat.No: CRREV 220) Twenty two tracks from The Empress Of The Blues, a huge hit in the 1920's. Real classic blues, her recordings often featured the best backing players around, from Louis Armstrong and Joe Smith toJames P Johnson and Charlie Green. Her elaborate live shows Harlem Frolics and Mississippi Days were smash hits thoughout the decade; The Blues were in and trendy, and Bessie was at the top of her game. Her career was effectively over by 1929 due to the swing in musical fashions and a planned comeback was cut short after her death in a 1935 car crash; she was one of the many acts on the endless chitlin' circuit, in Mississippi. Actor, singer, communist? Pushed out of America from an early age due to his strong anti racist stance, Robeson set himself up in England and became a star before the US government confiscated his passport, believing the multi talented bass-baritone to be a dangerous subversive force. Included here are a number of his best vocal performances: "Go Down Moses", "The Cobbler's Song", "The Song Of Freedom" and "Ol' Man River."	Lord Buckley - Most Immaculately Hip Aristocrat. CD. (Label: Collectors Choice, Cat.No: CCM791) A collection of 1956 perforances by the original rapper. His ultra hip style attracted many fans such as Dylan ,George Harrison and Zappa, who edited and compiled this album for release in 1970. Often difficult to get hold of, this release is very welcome. Both are full of the zany humour, well crafted songs and the musical dexterity that characterised their former group; this unique remastered film footage of Bob and the boys is a priceless gem. Marlene Dietrich - An Evening With. DVD. (Label: EMI, Cat.No: 4908949) 1972 live performance recorded in the New London Theatre, London. Originally a TV special, it is the highlights of two shows edited together. Perhaps typically, Marlene didn't like this show despite her honed abilities to woo the crowd with her charisma and a variety of songs from her entire career. Digitally remastered for its DVD release in 2003, it also has five bonus tracks that didn't appear on the VHS version. Twenty tracks, including: "Das Lied Ist Aus", " Falling In Love Again", "Boys In The Back Room" and "I Wish You Love."
