Bobby Darin - If I Were A Carpenter + Inside Out… Plau. CD. (Demon / Edsel - EDSS 1013)

In the sumer of 1966, swing star decided to ditch his successful swing stylings and became a fully fledged folk pop hero. Both produced by Charles Koppelman and Don Rubin (managers of Tim Hardin and John Sebastien), these 66 / 67 releases were a susprise to all but they still became hits. Largely made up of Hardin, Sebastien, Randy Newman, John Denver and Buffy Saint Marie track. Included amongst the original twenty one tracks are five bonus numbers from an aborted session planned as a follow up that were unreleased at the time. An interesting, if brief foray into uncharted territories for an established star is always something to be admired.

Bobby Darin - Sings Doctor Dolittle / Born Walden Robert Cassotto. CD. (Demon / Edsel - EDSS 1014)

His last album for Altantic Records and his first on his own Direction label are an interesting two fer one combination as they bookend a time of personal tragedy for the singer and represent two very different sides of his characrer. As the title suggests, Darin sings the Leslie Bricusse numbers from the Doctor Dolittle film in his amiable swing pop style. His next album (titled with his birth name) was completely self written in a caravan in Big Sur California during a time of reflection and rebuilding of his personal life. It his first folk protest album and shows off a hitherto unknown side to him, touching on the death of Robert Kennedy and the slave trade. Never released on CD before, this sought after album features rare photos from the era. Twenty tracks in all, including: "At The Crossroads", "Long Line Rider", "After Today" and "In Memoriam."
