Charley Patton - The Definitive. 3-CD Box Set. (Recall Box/Snapper - SBO1)

Everything EVER recorded by one of the true godfathers of delta blues, the man who even influenced the influences. Without Patton there would have been no Howlin' Wolf, Son House or Robert Johnson- which kind of casts a doubt as to whether half of the subsequent music of the Western world might have existed without him either!! But Patton's is not the tragic story of hardship and racism popular legend associates with bluesmen- despite the prejudice of the time, he was a genuine star with an expensive axe, very rich indeed and in high demand as a performer. According to Sleepy John Estes, he was the loudest blues singer ever heard, whose unamplified voice would carry for miles. Whether or not this is truth or urban myth no-one knows, but these 58 tracks, recorded between 1929 and and his death in 1934, are important recordings by a very important artist indeed. Of course, the source material, no matter how times one remasters it, will always show its limitations, as the 78s these are taken from were all pretty much scratched to buggery by the time CD was invented- but that simply adds to the authenticity of genuine raw delta blues.
