Don Cherry - Orient + Blue Lake. Dble CD. (Snapper / Charly - SNAD513CD)

Regarded as one of the original pioneers of World music, this is two digitally remastered albums originally from '69. Orient features his regular three piece band and guest musicicans Dutch drummer Han Bennink and South African bassist Johnny Dyani. This album touches on elements of Indian, Indonesian, African and American Indian music. Blue Lake focuses more on the American Indian style of arrangements in extremely extended songs, some stretching for thirty minutes. Don Cherry - Symphony For Improvisers. CD. (Blue Note - 5638292)

Cherry's second album, first released in 1966. Considering that his previous album was recorded by only a quartet, Symphony For Improvisers is surprisingly sparse considering he added another three members to the line up. Split across two lengthy pieces: The title track and "Manhattan Cry", it is one of Don's most energetic jam sessions that dips and rides through a wide range of styles and emotions.
