Dr John - Babylon. CD. (Wounded Bird Records - WOU 270)

Dr. John's second solo album was released in 1969 shortly after the groundbreaking voodoo-psychedelia-New Orleans R&B fusion of his first album Gris-Gris. Not quite as wild as his debut the album nonetheless is worth a listen. A sparser production that's more reliant on female backup vocals is oddly bleak and despairing but the album has a late night charm and at times the Doctor sounds like Van Morrison!

Dr John - Gris-Gris. CD. (Collectors Choice - CCM01312)

Dr. Johns classic debut from 1968. There are two kinds of people in this world. Those who have heard this album and those who haven't. It's so hard to describe because there is simply no other record like it. One part psychedelia one part New Orleans R&B and one part something else (voodoo ritual ?) Very weird and highly entertaining in the right circumstances....Turn out the lights...

1973 album from the king of New Orleans rock who finally struck gold with this release. The album gave Dr.John the hit single "Right Place Wrong Time" and saw many unaware listeners being initiated into his unique style. Since it also features able help from the Meters as a backing group, In the Right Place is a fine collection to own.

Dr John - N'Awlinz Dis Dat Or D'Udda. CD.

The concept of this unique 2004 album was to present a loose history of the music & traditions of New Orleans past and present. From the late 19th Century classical-style, through ragtime, swing, R'n'B & rock'n'roll, into the 1960s where Dr John became highly influential through "Gris Gris". Special guests include Willie Nelson, BB King, Randy Newman, Mavis Staples, Cyril Neville, The Dirty Dozen Brass Band & Dave Bartholomew, plus Earl Palmer, Smokey Johnson Jnr, Clarence 'Gatemouth' Brown, Snooks Eaglin, Mardi Gras Indians & Wardell Quezergue Horns. The booklet captures the feel of New Orleans with some great local photographs taken during a recent visit, & each track features a short note by Dr John himself in his own inimitable style (and language!).

Dr John - Remedies. CD. (Wounded Bird Records - WOU 316)

The third Dr John album from 1970 is an amazing experience. Including such standout tracks as "Wash Mama Wash" and "Loop Garoo," it also includes the 17 minute "Angola Anthem," which is a dark, swirling and mysterious adventure that makes an eerie headphone experience. The music hangs around the room like an evil fog whilst Dr John and his backup singers, moan, chant and cry out in the foggy depths. Superb and very weird.

Dr John - The Sun, Moon & Herbs. CD. (Wounded Bird Records - WOU 362)

This 1971 album (the Dr's 4th) was originally intended as a triple album but was cut down into a single-disc release. The seven tracks are all quite lengthy and weave dark and swampy spells. "Black John the Conqueror" comes from old Cajun folklore whilst "Pots on Fiyo (Fils Gumbo)" combines Latin American rhythms with lots of Cajun chants and spells. There are also guest appearances from Eric Clapton, Mick Jagger Graham Bond and many others. Weird and wonderful.

Dr John - Duke Elegant. CD. (Parlophone Records - 5232202)

Released to tie in with the 100 year anniversary of the Duke Ellington's birth, this is the most recent of many Dr John albums that tackles the legendary band leaders songs. Reinterpreting classic numbers with his free-for-all New Orleans swing style is quite frankly a work of genius. As ever, the Doctors piano and organ abilities are on fine form here, as are his smooth vocals; his decision to record a mixture of rarely heard numbers and hits, both instrumental and vocal led songs, is by far the most important things about the album. A pleasant addition to John's back catalogue and a more tha nworthy tribute of a great artist.
