Fairport Convention - XXXV. CD. (Eagle - EAGCD350)

Fairport Convention, the true legends of the folk world celebrated their 35th Anniversary in the business in 2002 and with this came a special album entitled XXXV. Sadly this album was deleted very soon after its release.That is until now. Featuring the writing talents of Chris Leslie the re-release has three bonus tracks. Many of the tracks featured on XXXV are still featured on the Fairport Convention set when on tour.

Fairport Convention - Wood And The Wire. CD. (Talking Elephant - TECD082)

Recorded in 1999 this is another fine slice of Fairport Convention beauty.14 tracks, all excellent stuff and it’s great to see the band back in full flow with the new material fitting as snug as a glove. New kid on the block (ok relatively new) Chris Leslie brings to the band his songwriting talents and adds tenor banjo to his arsenal of weapons on this CD.

Fairport Convention - Who Knows?- The Woodworm Archives Series 1. CD. (Talking Elephant - TECD072)

Long buried in the vaults, Woodworm are proud to finally unleash this fine live recording from THE definitive UK folk-rock band. Recorded in 1975 during their Rising For The Moon tour ( once more reunited with the legendary Sandy Denny), to support the album of that name, it contains not only tracks from that release ("One More Chance" which some consider her finest vocal, and "Iron Lion" voiced by the lugubrious Trevor Lucas) but selections from her solo album "The North Star Grassman And The Ravens" such as "John The Gun" and Dylan's "Down In The Flood". For fans of the Swarb-fronted lineup, there are stomping renditions of "The Hexamshire Lass" and "Sloth" to relish. Oh, if only there were a DVD release!! But for now, this fine CD will do nicely. Part 1 of a series of Pegg-endorsed forthcoming collectors' editions.

Vol 1 of the archives from Fairport's very own Woodworm Studios, officially sanctioned for release by Dave and Christine Pegg. Historical in that this is the very first live recording of this classic lineup- Sandy Denny, Trevor Lucas, Jerry Donahue, Dave Swarbrick, Dave Pegg and Bruce Rowlands on the 'Rising For The Moon' tour- to be released, and of aesthetic value as many fans belive this to be the pinnacle, alongside 'Liege And Lief' that is, of their achievement (although to be honest all their albums from 1967 to 1977 are excellent). Features a track not included on the CD issue- thus making it a complete concert recording.

Fairport Convention - Rising For The Moon (remastered). CD. (Island - IMCD 312)

Sandy Denny briefly re-joined Fairport to reunite with her husband Trevor Lucas and other another Fotheringay mainstay Jerry Donahue. Together with Dave Swarbrick and co they made this truly great album. It combines the best elements of both Fotheringay and Fairport but was sadly to be Sandy Denny's last album for the band. The beautiful rousing title track is one of the best English Folk Rock songs ever recorded and other tracks like 'White Dress' and 'Iron Lion', are of the same standard. Rising For the Moon is certainly an essential part of the Fairport Convention cannon. This slip cased edition contains 4 bonus tracks,an expanded booklet and slipcase packaging.

Fairport Convention - Quiet Joys Of Brotherhood. Dble CD + DVD. (Snapper - SBOX001)

Triple set including two discs' worth of live music from the early days of Cropredy- 1986 and 1987. The set on disc 1 stretches RIGHT across the band's immense catalogue, even all the way back to 'Reno Nevada' and the Merry Go Round cover 'Time Will Show The Wiser', and the newly inaugurated lineup of Nicol/ Mattacks/ Pegg/ Allcock/ Sanders (the same that would later record the band's second 'anthem', "Red And Gold") is here augmented by former alumni Ashley Hutchings, Jerry Donahue, Richard Thompson (taking lead vocal and showing off why he's still the world's greatest guitarist on 'Sloth') and Iain Matthews (treating us to spirited takes on 'Suzanne' 'Woodstock' and 'Who Knows Where The Time Goes' plus the aforementioned ". . .Wiser") although the majority of the Sandy Denny material is handled well by the able Cathy LeSurf. On Disc 2, the same band is once again joined by Thompson, who this time contributes 'Hand Of Kindness' , June Tabor covering Denny's classic 'John The Gun', Ralph McTell on 'Bridge Of Sighs' LeSurf on Dylan's 'Tomorrow Is A Long Time' and even Swarb himself doing 'Rosie'- probably one of the last times he recorded a lead vocal before being struck down by emphasaema. And would you believe they wrap it all up with a rendition of Rahasaan Roland Kirk's "Serenade To a Cuckoo"? Disc 3 is a fascinating 55-minute interview with thte two members who have led this band on and off for over 35 years through thick and thin- Dave Pegg and Simon Nicol. These recordings were pretty much the last time Fairport live ever sounded like a young and vibrant band, so they should be hunted down immediately. Without wanting to sound too nostalgic, those really were the days.

Fairport Convention - Over The Next Hill. CD.

This 2004 release is one of the best albums in decades from one of the greatest folk rock outfits of them all showcasing new songs from Chris Leslie,Ben Bennion,Julie Matthews and Steve Tilston. Less ballads than previous albums and more of an upbeat feel throughout and with a reworking of "Si Tu Dois Partir" which was originally released on "Unhalfbricking" in 1969.

Excellent 24 page booklet with full colour pictures and sleevenotes by Patrick Humphries rounds this collection off with style.

If you know nothing about Fairport then this is the best way to discover the most important UK folk rock band who (amongst other celebrated musicians) featured the incredible vocal talents of Sandy Denny and guitarist Richard Thompson. A double CD with 34 Tracks in total, taking in the period between their self titled debut album in 1968 to their final album for Island 'Rising For The Moon' in 1975. A Great package featuring soundboard/radio broadcast recordings of the classic Fairport line-up of Sandy Denny, Dave Mattacks, Dave Pegg, Jerry Donahue, Trevor Lucas, and Dave Swarbrick. Recorded during the bands lengthy 1974 US tour and just before they recorded Rising For the Moon the microphone captured the band at a creative peak. Stunning performances on this double CD edition that is limited to a few thousand copies (thereafter it will be a single CD) Includes a detailed booklet with loads of period photos. Remastered slipcased version 1971 outing from Fairport Convention when the band were a four piece and twas to be Simon Nicol's last before joining the Albion Country Band. A fine album with excellent guitar playing from Nicol throughout. Bonus material (2 songs "Farewell to a Poor Man's Son" & "Breakfast in Mayfair") are taken from the 1975 BBCTV programme 'The Man They Couldn't Hang' and these recordings include Jerry Donahue and on the second track Sandy Denny.

Fairport captured in their best environment- onstage. This recording dates from 1996 around the time of the 'Wood And The Wire' album and tour, featuring the Nicol-Pegg-Sanders- Mattacks-Allcock lineup that revitalised the band in the late 80s and early 90s. More importantly, this was the last time that Swarb played with them- as a guest on the final track- before his health became too poor to make regular touring a concern. The material on this CD was all previously unissued.

Fairport Convention - A Lasting Spirit. 3-CD. (Sanctuary Midline - SMETD190)

Another Fairport box set? Ah yes, but with a difference!! 3 discs, each covering a different period and aspect of the band's long and extensive career which began as long ago as 1967. Disc 1 is a mixture of studio and live work from both the Dyble and Denny eras, some of which has never seen the light of day before- such as Denny's bittersweet reading of former lover Jackson C Frank's 'You Never Wanted Me' and a storming live version of Leonard Cohen's 'Suzanne'. Disc 2 is culled from the lineup that recorded the sessions for what some claim was their last classic album, 1989's 'Red and Gold'- Pegg, Mattacks, Allcock, Nicol and Sanders excelling in their trademark joyous brand of electrically amplified traditional folk. Again, outtakes are included, but all studio. Disc 3 concentrates on some of the best live performances over the years from Cropredy, the festival they made their own, ranging over a lenghty period spanning classics like 'Sloth' and 'Walk Awhile' to later instrumentals and even a cover of 'I Heard It Through The Grapevine' (!!!) In short, this is a compilation all Fairport fans should own- and at a reasonable price.
