Gil Scott-Heron - Small Talk At 125th & Lennox. LP. (Flying Dutchman - H131)

Gil's first album, and still his angriest to date. Musically a fair distance away from his mellower, jazzier, more soulful recordings, this was the sound of an impassioned young man rapping his firm beliefs over heavily percussive accompaniment and frenetic hard jazz blowing. This was the album that gave birth to 'The Revolution Will Not Be Televised' which became his anthem for many years to come, but there are several others ('Whitey On The Moon' 'The Subject Was Faggots' etc) of equal note here. Like The Last Poets, Weldon Irvine, Wanda Robinson, ESG and The Sequence, Gil is a vital cog in the development of black music since 1970. This is the album that started it all, and gave birth to about four genres simultaneously- in a beautiful heavyweight vinyl reissue.

Gil Scott-Heron - First Minutes Of A New Day. LP. (Arista - 4350)

US import. An exact repro of this classic 1975 soul album. Heron continues to push his street poet persona on to the political stage via a series of beautiful tribal rhythms and afro-roots sensiblities. Something for the activist in everyone.

Exact reproduction of this classic soul album from 1971. Includes the legendary 'The Revolution Will Not Be Televised' and the absolute gem that is 'Lady Day And John Coltrane'. Without a doubt, one of the most cohesive links between Jazz, Soul and what would later become Hip-Hop. Everyone should own this..

Gil Scott-Heron - Anthology- Messages. Dble LP. (Soul Brother Records - LPSBPJ26)

Anthology of one of the most important and influential black artists of his or any generation (what, more than Maxi Priest?- Sarcastic Ed). Like Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, Curtis Mayfield, Bob Marley and Louis Armstrong, his music transgresses all boundaries, and he is heralded in rock as well as soul and jazz circles. Along with his partner and lyricist Brian Jackson, Heron wrote and recorded some of the most memorable songs of the 70s, always with poignant lyrics, and hey, whaddya know- he invented rap along the way!! 'The Bottle' (later covered by The Christians) has been a club favourite since its release in 1973, 'Johannesburg' predicted the unrest in South Africa two years before Soweto, ''It's Your World' has been an anthem for individuals since the early 90s, and 'The Revolution Will Not Be Televised' doesn't even need explaining to anyone reading this website!! This album puts together 15 of the best and most in-demand recordings from 1973 to 1980, and is the first collection covering that period since 1990. Limited edition and housed in a single sleeve.
