Compilation of Gongs's '75-'78 studio albums Tracks from 'Shamal', 'Gazeuse' and 'Expresso II' marking the transition from 'classic' Gong to 'Pierre Moerlen's Gong' and a more instrumental space rock sound, without the pot head pixies in residence.
Put simply, a 'greatest hits' (although they never officially released a single as such) from one of the most enduring UK/Euro bands of the last 35 years. Daevid Allen, one of the true freaks, a man who was already causing subversive upheaval and extolling a beatnik lifestyle -get this- AT PUBLIC SCHOOL IN AUSTRALIA IN 1953!!!!- has led Gong on and off through various permutations since quitting Soft Machine in 1968, and with the help of such other space travellers as Gilli Smyth, Steve Hillage, Didier Malherbe, Tim Blake and the late Pierre Moerlen, created a wonderful acid-fried world of gnomes, pixies, witches and goddesses that is now part of the everyday language of hippies everywhere. This compilation concentrates largely on the first four or five albums from 'Magick Brother Mystick Sister' up to 'You', rather than their later jazz-rock, punk and trance periods (although one tune from 'Flaoting Anarchy' is included), and as such features the tunes that to some defined (to some) what hippie culture was in the UK the way the Dead did in the US. Some progressive bands may have espoused it- but this band lived it- and nearly 40 years on, they still do!! Regular Freak Customers will need no introduction to these tunes, but for those not in the know, try 'You Can't Kill Me' 'Tropical Fish' 'Radio Gnome Invisible' 'The Pot Head Pixies' 'I Am Your Pussy' 'Oily Way' 'I Niver Glid Before' 'And You Tried So Hard' and 'Opium For The People'. All stone- sorry, make that STONED classics.
1975 and the Classic Flying Teapot line-up of Gong had gone. With Mike Howlett Didier Malherbe and Pierre Moerlen still on board and Steve Hillage just about involved the band went in a jazz rock direction but retained the weirdness factor. Shamal is a great album, halfway between classic and late '70's Gong. Includes "Wingful Of Eyes"...

Mostly featuring the classic Gong line-up from 1971 - 1974 it contains killer extended live versions of tracks from that trilogy, a fantastic BBC session (with the definitive "Oily Way") and a couple of studio tracks that never made it on to an album - one of which is the bizarre attempt at a single entitled "Est-Ce Que Je Suis (I am)". Plenty of saxophone work from Didier Malherbe and Theo Travis and of course Daevid Allen's glissando guitar. This CD presents a band still very active, engaging, and relevant and the sound quality is excellent as well. Steve Wilson of P.Tree gets a mention in the sleeve notes too !
