I Roy - Presenting I Roy, Hell & Sorrow. CD. (Trojan - CDTRL389)

First two albums from 1973 on a single CD. His conversational style was far removed from his contemporaries, as his powerful toast on "Black Man's Time" perfectly illustrates. That song is the album's centerpiece, built around the "Slaving" rhythm, it opened with a long spoken intro, unique at the time. "Red, Gold and Green" was equally cultural in nature, with "Peace" an exuberant demand for unity, while "Screw Face" takes a thoughtful look at solutions for Jamaica's endemic violence. Excellently employing classic rocksteady rhythms, as with the wonderfully moody "Coxsonne Affair." Over twenty seminal cuts in all.

I Roy - Heart Of A Lion. CD. (Virgin Records - CDFL1)

CD re-issue of the 1977 release that had tasty bass-lines, great horn sections and of course, the kicking toasting and lyrics of I-Roy. And check out this lineup: T & B (horns); Earl Lindo (piano, organ); Pablo, Wire (synthesizer); Robbie Shakespeare (bass); Leroy Horsemouth, Santa (drums); Scientist (percussion); Scully (bongos). This is a good album to skank to or simply relax with.

I Roy - Gussie Presenting I Roy. Dble CD. (Trojan - TJDDD350)

Following the enormous commercial success of Big Youth’s ‘Screaming Target’, producer Augustus Clarke wasted little time in bringing Jamaica’s other up and coming DJ, I Roy into the studio to record an album. The resulting sessions produced the equally impressive highly acclaimed Gussie presenting I Roy LP, which in 1973 established the DJ as one of the biggest names on the island’s music scene. Now the album finally sees issue in the UK in its original colour sleeve, with the original 12 tracks now bolstered by the remainder of I Roy’s recordings for Gussie from the period, along with the recordings that originally provided the backing tracks for the DJ’s seminal debut LP.
