Ian Dury - The Bus Driver's Prayer & Other Stories. Dble CD. (Edsel - MEDCD 754)

A gem in the rough (Dury's solo work up to this point had been disappointing) that has, for too long now, been overlooked has now been given the deserved deluxe expanded dble CD treatment. Originally released in 1992 The Bus Driver's Prayer saw Dury reunited with Blockheads Mickey Gallagher, Chaz Jankel, Davey Payne and John Turnbull for an album worthy of the Blockheads title. All the recordings on the bonus disc are previously unreleased and are made up of out-takes from the album sessions. The booklet contains fulll annotation by Will Birch, all the lyrics and unpublished photos.

Ian Dury - Reasons To Be Cheerful- The Best Of. Dble CD. (Music Club Deluxe - MCDLX016)

A great 34-track overview of a true genius, a one off, an iconoclast whose achievements in the pantheon of British music still stand head and shoulders above his contemporaries. Like his old college oppo Viv Stanshall, Dury was a walking synthesis of English culture come to life, an upright two-legged human London in Home Counties trousers. His lyrics told stories of characters and situations that most rock and pop songwriters wouldn't even think about, his music took in everything from the music hall and burlesque tradition to free jazz, film soundtracks, ska, funk and pre-Beatles rock'n'roll, and his bands- the Kilburns and the Blockheads- produced some of the finest musicians (in particular Norman Watt Roy and Chas Jankel) of any era. Of course, Dury was a natural ally to the punk and pub rock movements, leaving his indelible mark on both of them, but in truth he belonged to no movement except his own- although he does deserve a place in the pantheon of great English eccentrics alongside Stanshall, Bob Calvert, Robyn Hitchcock, Kevin Ayers, Kevin Coyne, David Sutch, Peter Wyngarde and numerous others. This compilation features all his hit singles, album tracks and rarities, and sleevenotes by longtime admirer Phil Jupitus. Sadly there's no 'I Made Marie Cry In A Lonely Bus Shelter', but you can't 'ave everything, can yer? Not to be missed.
