Incredible String Band - Wee Tam And The Big Huge 2 CD Set. Dble CD. (Collectors Choice - CCM2902)

The classic 1968 double album (split in the USA into two albums) is a treasure trove of UK acid folk hippie strangeness including the bizarre "Air" "The Iron Stone" and the achingly beautiful lament of "The Circle Is Unbroken". Features founding members Robin Williamson (organ, bass, flute, guitar, percussion, piano, violin, drums, harpsichord, kazoo, whistle, sarangui, gimbri, and Irish harp) and Mike Heron (organ, bass, guitar, harmonica, harpsichord, sitar, and washboard) as well as their significant others, Christina "Liquorice" McKechnie (vocals, percussion, and Irish harp) and Rose Simpson (violin, bass, and vocals). A masterpiece.

Incredible String Band - U (Remastered). Dble CD. (Warner Music - 7559 627 612)

U was the band's 1970 concept album recorded to go with a live theatre performance. It was at points baffling but nevertheless a masterpiece of work that now suits the re-mastered treatment down to the ground.Heron's "Rainbow" clocking in at 15 minutes is a real treat weaving rock elements into the psych-folk.Therefore, even if U is somewhat underrated, it's still a lot to take in at one time. On repeated listenings, however this whole album starts to make sense and it must have been amazing live! A real lost classic.

Incredible String Band - The Circle Is Unbroken - Live And Studio Demos 1967-74. Dble CD. (Castle - CMDDD1210)

A two disc set of quite differing recordings from the ISB, the first (Disc 1) being a recently discovered batch of demos recorded in Chelsea before the recording of the 5000 Spirits, and the second a recording from their 1972 Canadian tour between 'Earthspan' and 'No Ruinous Feud'. As well as versions of 'First Girl I Ever Loved' 'Mad Hatter's Song' 'Cousin Caterpillar' 'Lighthouse Keeper' and the inevitable 'Black Jack David' there's a version of 'Ikthos' that predates its appearance on 'Hard Rope and Silken Twine' by some 18 months, an 'Old Buccaneer' with totally different lyrics to those that appeared on the album, and 'God Dog' which was also recorded by Shirley and Dolly Collins.

Incredible String Band - I Looked Up (remastered). CD. (Warner Music - 7559 627 602)

Last of the missing vinyl albums re-issued on CD. This was first on your turntables in 1970 and still sounds as fresh now.Lengthy excursions this time around as two of the six tracks run for about six minutes, with Robin Williamson's "When You Find Out Who You Are" and "Pictures in a Mirror" clocking in at 11 minutes. They were edging closer to more conventional rock on this release in their own unique style.

Incredible String Band - Incredible String Band. LP. (Sundazed - LP5127)

Amazing debut 1966 album (in the US cover) from the original ISB trio (Williamson, Heron and Palmer). All the usual harmonies, exotic instrumentation and proto-psychedelic flashes are in evidence although with a more minimalist feel than in later releases. Classic early beat-folk from a band that did much to pave way for the UK late 60s/early 70s folk-rock scene. Includes the magical 'October Song' and the surreal 'Smoke Shovelling Song' 180 gram vinyl release.

Incredible String Band - ISB & 5000 Spirits (2 CD Set). CD. (Elektra - 8122765042)

The debut 1966 album from the ISB was also their most simple. It is this minimalism that allowed the natural radiance of the band's (mostly) original material to be evident in the purist sense, and likewise without many of the somewhat intricate distractions and musical tangents that their future works would incorporate.Moving onto 5000 Spirits from 1967 explored mind expanding and surreal Eastern and Arabic influences. Now remastered and housed in deluxe packaging with new liner notes, rarely seen photographs and period ephemera.

Incredible String Band - No Ruinous Feud. CD. (Edsel - EDCD 367)

Incredible String Band - Hard Rope & Silken Twine. CD. (Edsel - EDCD 368)

This final String Band album was released in 1974, and combined electric folk tunes with orchestrated seafaring sagas and live favourites in a beautiful collection. Not a bad way to finish, a fine output of a great band.

Incredible String Band - Here Till Here Is There - An Introduction To.... CD. (Island - IMCD 280)

Great budget priced introduction to the Island years of this fabulous band. The myth is that the Island material is not very good but this comp demonstrates otherwise. Fifteen tracks that move in a folk rock direction whilst retaining the wit, charm and invention you would expect. Remastered and featuring sleeve notes by longtime ISB expert Raymond Greenaoken.

Indispensable third ISB album dating from 1968 with an enormous wealth of instruments and ideas on offer. With the addition of several new members and Joe Boyd at the production helm, this album defined the Incredible String Band as one of the most important psych-folk acts of the 60s. Incredible String Band - Earthspan/No Ruinous Feud. Dble CD. (B.G.O. Records - BGOCD628)

2fer containing two very underrated albums in the ISB canon. 'Earthspan' actually gave the world two of their most popular tunes- 'My Father Was A Lighthouse Keeper' and 'Black Jack David' ( the last written by that great songwriter, Trad Arr)- whilst 'No Ruinous Feud' was probably the closest the band ever came to a full-on pop record, although there were enough jigs, reels and acid-fried lunacy to keep the faithful happy. Remastered.

Incredible String Band - Changing Horses/I Looked Up. Dble CD. (Collectors Choice - CCM2912)

1969 and 1970 albums by the by now four piece ISB. Regarded as one of the Incredible String Band's lesser efforts, Changing Horses does have an appealing looseness. With two tracks topping the 15-minute mark in length, some of the record comes off like a drifting drunken living room jam session and is quite unique. I Looked Up has excellent lengthy tracks (two of the six tracks run for about six minutes, with Robin Williamson's "When You Find Out Who You Are" and "Pictures in a Mirror" each lasting for 11 minutes) and the album edges closer to more conventional rock; Mike Heron's "The Letter" almost approaches country-rock, with drums by Dave Mattacks of Fairport Convention.

Incredible String Band - Be Glad For The Song Has No Ending/Liquid Acrobat As Regards. CD. (B.G.O. Records - EDCD 564)

Fantastic 1970 soundtrack to The Incredible String Band's film of the same name. Harking back to the band's '60s sound, this album features all of the music from the film, which was basically a hippy version of a mummers play. The whistful, mystical and beautifully poetic music on this album somehow trancends time with it's fragile mystery. This album is coupled with their first release on Island in 1971 which recaptured the old magic but added an electric flavour. It features the superb "Dear Old Battlefield" and kept the band on the UK's college and festival scene whilst retaining their crackpot die hard hippy following. One of the best later albums.

Incredible String Band - 5000 Spirits Or The Layers Of The Onion. LP. (Sundazed - LP5128)

Second album from British psych-folk outfit (now just the duo of Mike Heron and Robin Williamson) dating from 1967. Altogether more trippy than the debut, this album explores mind expanding and surreal Eastern and Arabic influences and features one of the classic psychedelic sleeves of all time! (by The Fool) One of the essential acid albums of the '60's including "Chinese White",the epic acid parable "The Mad Hatters' Song" the dark "My Name Is Death" and ten other gems. Essential for fans of UK psych and folk alike!

Incredible String Band - 5000 Spirits / Hangmans Beautiful Daughter. Dble CD. (Collectors Choice - CCM2892)

The second and third ISB albums were made by the duo of Mike Heron and Robin Williamson, whose sound comprised haunting Celtic folk melodies augmented by a variety of Middle Eastern and Asian instruments with acid overtones. This excellent double CD has the second album which threw them in with the psychedelic movement, and has become the bench mark for psychedelic folk mixing surreal lyrics with off the wall acoustic instrumentation and melodies. Their next album, The Hangman's Beautiful Daughter, is usually considered their most adventurous, although some listeners may find this to be the more accessible effort. It also featured what is probably Williamson's best-known song, "First Girl I Loved" (also familiar via Judy Collins' cover version, "First Boy I Loved").

Incredible String Band - Across The Airwaves: BBC Radio Recordings 1969-1974. Dble CD. (Hux Records - HUX087)

In the late 60s, the ISB became major players on the burgeoning underground scene, sharing bills with the likes of Pink Floyd at London’s UFO club and acquiring cult status with the cognoscenti after the 1967 release of their album, ‘5,000 Spirits Or The Layers Of The Onion’. John Peel soon became a big fan and was quick to get them to record sessions for his BBC Radio 1 shows. The Incredible String Band adopted an adventurous approach to their BBC radio sessions, using them to try out new, non-album material or radically rearrange older songs, encompassing a remarkable variety of instrumentation and genres. This double CD contains 13 previously unreleased recordings and has been compiled and released with the full co-operation of the band. The accompanying 24 page booklet includes rare photographs, comprehensive liner notes and a full BBC sessionography, plus an additional note from Mike Heron and lyrics to several of the featured songs.
