(Music Avenue - 250150) Jefferson Airplane were one of the first and foremost phenomenons of the mid-sixties San Francisco psychedelia scene, though it wasn't until their June 1967 performance at the Monterey International Pop Festival that national and international fame was secured.This was the classic Jefferson Airplane line-up, fronted by the marvellous twin vocal attack of Grace Slick and Marty Balin. Paul Kantner provided backing vocals and rhythm guitar while drummer Spencer Dryden had the unenviable task of keeping up with bassist Jack Cassady and lead guitarist Jorma Kukonen. The occasional keyboard, particularly noticeable on 'Today', is played by Slick. The two best-known Jefferson Airplane songs, 'Somebody To Love' and 'White Rabbit', are both here, in versions that stick closely to the studio recordings. But it is tracks like 'The Other Side Of This Life' and 'The Ballad Of You And Me And Pooneil', where the band mirror the meandering intensity of the psychedelic experience, which provide the real highlights.
