Jimi Hendrix Experience - Axis:Bold As Love. CD. (Universal - MCD11601)

Undoubted stone cold classic from 1967. In one way, 'Axis..' is simply an excellent follow-up to 'Are You Experienced?'. However, the leap in composition and studio technique is quite phenomenal. Hendrix had traversed the "Swinging London" backdrop that had so much influence on the first album and, by way of Haight Ashbury, managed to produce an album that seemed to both define and transcend the full-on psychedelic trends of the time. Beginning with the highly lysergic 'EXP' where Jimi and Mitch conduct an interview about aliens, and continuing through the exquisite 'Little Wing', the hippy anthem, 'If 6 Was 9' and the backwards-guitar wash of 'Castles Made Of Sand'. Its Psych, its Rock, its Pop.. Its simply perfect.22 page colour booklet.

Jimi Hendrix Experience - Axis: Bolder Than Love. Dble CD. (Purple Haze - HAZE010)

Axis: Bold As Love is often overlooked as merely the follow up to the Experience’s explosive debut release or the album before Hendrix’s tour-de-force, Electric Ladyland. This is a huge mistake as the album contains some of rock’s finest moments from the driving rock of "Little Miss Lover" to the sheer beauty of "Little Wing" to the psychedelia of "If 6 Was 9". The arrival of Roger Mayer and his startling bag of electronic tricks added to the other worldly feel of the disc. Disc 2 of this contains the Paris Olympia show from 29 January 1968 and despite Axis' presence close to the top of the charts, the set list that night still relied heavily on material from Are You Experienced and earlier. Opening with the explosive "Killing Floor" the rest of the set is very blues focussed including "Catfish Blues", "Red House" and "Driving South" tempered with the more melodic "Wind Cries Mary" and "Little Wing". The Hendrix faithful were catered for too by the inclusion of favourites Foxy Lady, Fire and the show’s closer Purple Haze.

Stirring essential guitar led psyched up blues rock indeed, and never bettered in our humble opinion.

6 complete October 1968 Winterland performances-presented together for the first time-officially licensed from the estate of Hendrix’s former manager, Michael Jeffery-numbered, limited edition - only 2000 copies world-wide.The more than 6 hours of live music assembled here gives Hendrix fans the first opportunity to compare The Experience’s live performances 2-performances per night 3-day recorded during the band’s temporary residence at San Francisco’s Winterland arena. Given that these recordings have been assembled from a variety of different sources, the sound quality (with the exception of the last 3 tracks on Disc 3, which, as the soundboard tape mysteriously stopped running, have been taken from a less-than perfect audience recording) is excellent, and as usual, Jimi’s virtuoso delivery is as varied and unpredictable as ever, as are the technical problems which were invariably the sub-text of the majority of Hendrix concerts.
