The program length will be more double the length of the original 57 minute edition that has since been deleted for some time. Legendary stoned 1968 session from the Scene Club, New York with Jimi jamming in a band that includes Johnny Winter. Also present are Buddy Miles and a very drunk Jim Morrison who is on top "Lizard King" form. Tracks include "Sunshine Of Your Love," "Red House" and "Tomorrow Never Knows." Equal parts bluesy and incendiary, but always relevant.
By the time The Experience played six shows over three nights at the Winterland Ballroom, in S F (October 1968), they were a band in transition. They, particularly Jimi, had tired of banging out three-minute songs to a pop format and were experimenting with longer jams and improvisations, often inviting guests onto stage with them. Ironically many of these jams were based around the very songs that had been so successful as short, sharp shocks (a 13 minute version of "Are you Experienced" is a treat) Also added into the mix were instrumental versions of tracks like Cream’s "Sunshine Of Your Love" and Hansson and Karlsson’s "Tax Free". Other highlights include the seldom included "Manic Depression" (It is rare to find any live version of this number, let alone professionally recorded) and an early "Voodoo Chile (Slight Return)", which was to close the soon to be released Electric Ladyland. Bob Dylan’s "Like A Rolling Stone" had been a rare inclusion, but it is also performed here. Although taken from different shows, these recordings give a flavour of what it was like on those hot October nights, in 1968.

The music contained on this the fourth volume (including an alternate mix of "Bleeding Heart Blues In C Sharp", "Lover Man", a work in progress version of "Power of Soul takes nos.1 to 16" and more) comes from the period 7th November 1969 through to May 1970 and was recorded at The Record Plant in New York. During this period Jimi became involved in what would turn out to be the short-lived Band Of Gypsies project that featured drummer Buddy Miles and bassist Billy Cox. Billy had been playing with Jimi since the break up of the original Experience following a concert in Denver in June 1969. Many people have since claimed that The Band Of Gypsies were never meant to be a long term project but merely an opportunity to fulfil a contractual obligation. Whatever the reason halfway through an appearance at Madison Square Garden in early 1970 the Band Of Gypsies broke up rather spectacularly and Jimi once again began working with Billy Cox and Mitch Mitchell.Some of the key tracks recorded during this period would go on to appear in different forms on albums released following Jimi’s death in September 1970 such as Rainbow Bridge, The Cry Of Love and Loose Ends.
Of the many sessions that took place at Electric Lady in the summer of 1970, some of the tracks featured here such as "Belly Button Window"(instrumental), "Freedom", "Angel" and "Drifting" would eventually become key tracks on 'The Cry Of Love' and familiar to the many people who own that particular album. The versions presented here are of course work in progress, however the development of the songs particularly "Angel" can be heard in detail over the course of the four versions included on this release including one full run through with vocals a complete instrumental run through and two break downs shortly after the intro of the song. We get Jimi performing Hear My Train A Comin' alongside the programmes big band and from the Experience there are shortened versions of Isabella and Machine Gun. Alongside Jimi's musical appearances there is the standard interview and it is here that we see Jimi is far more comfortable letting his music do the talking. Although he is polite and gracious throughout you can tell he is a little uncomfortable with some of the questions posed. Both of Jimi's appearances are presented in their entirety along with a 55-minute documentary, which also reveals why Jimi didn't appear as scheduled on the day of his Woodstock appearance. A great historical release.

While the innovations and variations which were an integral part of his live performances with the Experience, here we find him surrounded by a different group of musicians doing what he loved best; jamming in front of a live audience in small, intimate venues, in this case, New York's Cafe A Go Go and The Generation Club. These 2 sessions, recorded by Hendrix himself, feature Elvin Bishop, Buddy Miles, B B King and Al Kooper in support as well! Hendrix's playing is simply outstanding throughout, as is the sound quality which, apart from the subdued vocal on T-Bone Walker's Stormy Monday Blues, is fantastic. Brilliant album which just goes to show the talents of this gentleman. From the title you expect it to be good, but not nearly this good! Jimi honors the Blues music tradition while remaining uniquely himself on this collection of outtakes including "Mannish Boy," the staggering "Once I Had A Woman," and"Bleeding Heart.".Only 1 cut on the 11 track release has been available before and that's the beautiful "Hear My Train a Comin" so who cares!. A 24 page colour booklet rounds off the release.
Two CD set that compiles the best of (now deleted) 6 Cd set from the PPX recordings.For psychedelic historians these recordings are very interesting in that they show the level that Hendrix was at this time in his career. Typical WahWah and fuzz guitars are demonstrated on "I Feel Good", the instrumental "Wah Wah" the standard "I'm A Man" and the volume laden, Hammond supported "Drivin' South".Also included is an early version of "The Ballad of Jimi". 24 tracks in total and a detailed booklet.
