Katy Carr - Passion Play. CD. (Deluce - MDL 216)

Having already made a gem of an album it was no surprise when Katy trumped it in 2003 with this. Enriching the musical palette with more strings, a full electric band, french horn, male vocals, sitars tablas and moogs Passion Play cherry picks the great moments of UK '70's folk rock and launches them into space on an undercurrent of dance infected textures. The result is a modern day classic of true psychedelic UK folk rock/pop experimentation. "Paper Castle" rolls along with a rustic trip hop grace, "Druggie" is chilled out sitar bliss whilst "Turpin" dips into the historical collective conciousness with a fanciful tale of highwaymen and escape. Throughout, Katy's voice is crystal pure and captivating. Highly refreshing and original.

Katy Carr - Screwing Lies. CD. (Madame De Luce - MDL117)

Stunning and little known debut from 2000 by this UK female folk singer who manages to take the feel and atmosphere of classic 70's UK folk rock and blend it perfectly with modern styles in a manner that is as captivating as Laua Veirs but differs dramatically in it's distinctly English style and delivery. Katy's vocal's - somewhere between the rustic yokelness of Anne Briggs and the surreal pop experimentation of early Kate Bush - are intermeshed with string ensembles, piano, electronic effects and percussion. A beautiful minimalist production adds a haunted and timeless vibe throughout to create a bit of a modern retro classic.
