Maypole - Maypole (The Riff). CD. (Radioactive - RRCD114) This 1970 US eponymous effort from Baltimore outfit Maypole mixes psych with heavy rock and adds some prog sub-themes to leaven the mix. Full of interesting ideas and some fabulous Hendrix-inspired lead guitar from founder Dennis Tobell, this album of original compositions was recorded at New York's A&R Studios by Pat Perticone. The band's name came from a Maypole erected in New England in defiance of Puritan laws designed to stifle life in 17th century America, and the album's lengthy liner notes, contain the group's "mission statement". "Maypole intends to combine the techniques of literature in lyrics and structure with the feeling generated by our music to communicate the "real" to an unlimited audience". Given that the album is famous for being rare, clearly the band's desire to reach an "unlimited audience" was not achieved, which is unfortunate as the record is well recorded, musically interesting and reminiscent of other heavy psych outfits such as Bubble Puppy, Ill Wind and Neighbourhood Childr'n.Now a sadly deleted Radioactive title.LAST FEW COPIES.

(Anopheles Records - ANOPHEL 11) First ever authorized vinyl reissue of this lost US psych classic, originally recorded in 1970, by this Baltimore twin guitar powerhouse, who specialized in fluid improvisation, complex and melodic song structures, and high charged emotions in their performance. One to file next to your Public Nuisance and Morgen LPs. As good as it gets for this type of record, this clear vinyl reissue features fully restored original artwork, state of the art remastering by Golden Mastering, and complete historical notes by Maypole co-founder, Dennis Tobell, and Anopheles Records' Karl Ikola.Thick card paste over sleeve and lyric insert.
