Moondog - The Viking Of Sixth Avenue. CD. (EMI - HJJRCD18)

The first ever full overview of the amazing artistic life of this New York street musician, wandering minstrel and general odd person, whose recordings span from 1949 to 1995- many of which are appearing for the first time here in any form since their original release. Dressed as a Viking, performing- sometimes living- on the street and often selling his recordings and his sheet music direct to the public, Moondog (aka Louis Hardin) specialised in jazz-inflected, simple, modal, rhythmic, repetitive compositions which later composers like Glass and Reich would gush over and refer to as the first minimalist music. Sadly he was to attract this kind of bohemian voyeurism until his death until aged 83 in 1999- but the fact is, he WAS a genius, influencing everyone from Janis Joplin to Anthony & The Johnsons and Mr Scruff, and this compilation is one of the best ways to demonstrate it. There'll never be another one quite like him.
