Nat King Cole Trio - Best Of The Nat King Cole Trio. 3-CD Set. (Blue Note - 4974802)

Sixty four track compilation from the days when Nat was better known as a brilliant jazz pianist. And leader of a tight trio. The CD's are split into categories: instrumentals and two vocal lead tracks covering the whole of the '40's. Without a drummer in the trio, it is left to Cole's rhythmic piano to lead the guitar and bass accompanyment, it would be a tough call to think of a better trio tha nthe one found here on thjis excellent set. Although not including many "King" classics, this is an essential part of his jazz / bop back catalogue.

Nat King Cole Trio - Best Of … The Instrumental Classics. CD. (Blue Note - 7982882)

A surprising album for the uninitiated, despite featuring the "King" of crooners, Nat doesn't sing a note here. This is strictly the instrumental highlights from his early Jazz period: 1943-49 with the original trio featuring Oscar Moore and Johnny Miller and three tracks with the second incarnation featuring Irving Ashby and Joe Comfort. A truly gifted and highly underrated piano player, this is the essential other side to the crooner royale.
