Nazareth - The Complete Singles Collection. 3-CD. (Recall Box/Snapper - SBOX045)

Exactly what it says on the label- every single (sadly no B sides though!) this enduring and endearing Scots hard rock act have ever released, from 1971's 'Dear John' to 1994's 'Move Me' and 'Morgentau' (Germany only). Some listed here were never released in the UK, but were massive hits in Germany and Canada. The ideal soundtrack for a whiskey drinkin' hard rock party nite out.

Nazareth - Sound Elixir. CD. (Essential - ESMCD793)

Nazareth - Snaz. CD. (Essential - ESMCD531)

No country in the world loved Nazareth more than Canada, where the band won literally dozens of awards in the 70s and 80s. So that territory was the natural place to record this storming 1981 live album, which documented their eclectic taste in covers, from the Byrds to Joni Mitchell, and J.J. Cale to the Everly Brothers.

Nazareth - Singles As And Bs. 4-CD Set. (Repertoire Records - REP5045)

80 superb tracks of prime gravel-throated, guitar-slicin', pile drivin' boogie rawk'n'rawl from deepest Dunfermline, from their first singles 'Dear John' and 'Morning Dew' in 1971 up to their last hits (Germany and North America only) in 1980. Some of the best hard rock tracks ever written ('Bad Bad Boy' 'Holy Roller' 'May The Sunshine' 'Love Leads To Madness' 'Witch Doctor Woman' 'Cats Eye Apple Pie' 'Miss Misery' 'Kentucky Fried Blues' 'Expect No Mercy' 'Hearts Grown Cold' 'Hair Of The Dog' 'Razamanaz' 'Dream On' 'Ship Of Dreams' 'Pop The Silo' 'Shanghaid In Shanghai' 'This Month's Messiah') rub shoulders with some of the most inventive covers ever given the hard rock treatment ('This Flight Tonight' 'My White Bicycle' 'Love Hurts' 'Ruby Tuesday'). A testament to a great band.

Nazareth - Rampant. CD. (Snapper - SDPCD169)

The bands fifth album from 1975, with Deep Purple bassist Roger Glover once again at the controls and Jon Lord guesting. The trademark Nazareth sound took on a more metallic edge this time, as demonstrated by their fiery cover of The Yardbirds "Shapes Of Things", the sheer pummel of 'Silver Dollar Forger', the sleazy 'Shanghaid In Shanghai' and the proto-sludge of 'Light My Way' Includes one bonus track!Housed a digi pack sleeve re-creating the original artwork

Nazareth - Play 'n' The Game. CD. (Essential - ESMCD794)

By the time the Scottish band released their eighth studio album, guitarist Manny Charlton had taken over production duties, giving them a very professional sound. As a result, "Play 'n' The Game" is one of Nazareth's most laid-back albums. When they rock, they really lay it down- as on 'Somebody To Roll' 'Born To Love' and 'LA Girls', and the wistful moments such as 'Flying' are beautiful, but it has to be said that too many daft cover versions ('Wild Honey' 'I Want To Do Everything For You' etc) were beginning to cloud the band's repertoire, especially as punk was now snapping at their heels. Includes four bonus tracks.

Nazareth - No Mean City. CD. (Eagle - EAMCD095)

Two Scottish legends met on this 1979 album, as Sensational Alex Harvey Band guitarist Zal Cleminson joined the original Nazareth quartet. The dramatic artwork from genre specialist Rodney Matthews was matched by the ferocious energy of the music, the band's heaviest effort to date. This was also the album that spawned the last hit singles the band were to have in the UK: the emotional power ballad 'Star' and the stomping 'May The Sunshine'. The title track and 'Simple Solution' are two of the best things the band ever recorded.

Nazareth - No Jive. CD. (Essential - ESMCD502)

The accent was firmly back on hard rock for this 1992 offering, which steered back towards the band's familiar sound. The bonus inclusion of a remake of their hit single "This Flight Tonight" offers the chance to compare the 90s line-up with their younger incarnation.

Nazareth - Nazareth. CD. (Essential - ESMCD796)

Nazareth - Move Me. CD. (Essential - ESMCD503)

Nazareth let their roots show on this 1994 album, with its heavy blues feel spicing up the band's traditional Scottish broth. Plus some real bonuses: unplugged versions of the Naz classics "Razamanaz", "My White Bicycle" and "This Flight Tonight" and a Rock Orchestra rendition of the timeless "Love Hurts".

Nazareth - Malice In Wonderland. CD. (Essential - ESMCD617)

With Jeff 'Skunk' Baxter at the controls, it's no surprise that this 1980 album was a deliberate (and highly successful) attempt to blend the traditional Nazareth sound with the AOR style that had recently swept across America- fuelled by the dual guitar sound they now had thanks to the addition of Zal Cleminson. What is a surprise is how well they pulled it off- and tracks like 'Big Boy' 'Heart's Grown Cold' 'Talkin' To One Of The Boys' 'Ship Of Dreams' 'Holiday' and 'Showdown At The Border' have all appeared in numerous live sets since. The four bonus tracks from the Live EP are much closer to the familiar Nazareth attack of old.

Nazareth - Loud 'n' Proud. CD. (Essential - ESMCD379)

An intelligent and passionate rock classic from 1973. Few bands have ever tackled outside songs with the daring and assurance that Nazareth brought to Joni Mitchell's "This Flight Tonight", Lowell George's "Teenage Nervous Breakdown" and Bob Dylan's "Ballad Of Hollis Brown". It has been said that when Naz covered a song they made it their own to the point where the cover became irrelevant- but it should be noted that their own compositions, such as 'Go Down Fighting' 'Turn On Your Receiver' and 'Not Fakin It'- the latter of which was so highly thought of by Michael Monroe of Hanoi Rocks that he not only covered it, he named his solo album after it- are all of an equally high standard. Includes three bonus tracks!

This rough-edged album was Nazareth's biggest-selling album around the world. Other highlights include 'Whisky Drinkin Woman' 'Miss Misery' and the exprimental, almost sci-fi sounding 'Please Don't Judas Me'. Known in North American territories as 'Son Of A Bitch' after a line in the title track. Remastered edition housed in a digi pack.

Nazareth - Fool Circle. CD. (Essential - ESMCD623)

With Zal Clemison having departed after "Malice In Wonderland", his old friend Billy Rankin took up the slack, while former Spirit keyboardist John Locke also showed up for this 1981 album, which showed the band experimenting with keyboards, a more pop-rock sound, and a political consciousness that was pertinent at the time but does somewhat date the album- the nuclear themed 'Pop The Silo' being a good example. 'Dressed To Kill' and 'Let Me Be Your Leader' are the strongest songs, but there's also five bonus tracks including a remake of Tim Rose's classic "Morning Dew", originally recorded by the band in 1969.

Nazareth - Expect No Mercy. CD. (Snapper - SDPCD182)

This typically aggressive 1977 album lived up to the raucous promise of its title. The two non-LP B-sides of their single version of Jck Nitzsche's "Gone Dead Train" are added to this CD, which also includes the 1978 hit "Place In Your Heart", and belting rockers like 'Shot Me Down', 'Kentucky Fried Blues' and the title track itself. Includes seven bonus tracks remastered and housed in a digipak.

Nazareth - Exercises. CD. (Essential - ESMCD795)

Nazareth - Cinema. CD. (Essential - ESMCD500)

Twenty years into their career, Nazareth still had the courage to augment their style. 1990's "Cinema" found them mixing atmospheric balladry with their ballsy hard rock. Features two extra alternate takes.

Nazareth - Close Enough For Rock 'n' Roll. CD. (Universal - 213109)

Fresh from his solo debut, Dan McCafferty led the band back into the fray on this 1976 LP, which opened up with their instant stage classic, "Telegram". Generally considered to be one of their finest compositions, it details life on the road in a band in the 70s and how tedious it can sometimes be, with a dramatic piano arrangement that stretches far beyond the band's hard rock origins. Other key tunes include 'Lift The Lid' and 'You're The Violin' With three bonus tracks!

Nazareth - Catch. CD. (Essential - ESMCD499)

Stripped back to the original four-piece for their 1984 debut on Vertigo, Nazareth proved that they had lost none of their raw power during the late 70s and early 80s stay in America. The Stones' classic "Ruby Tuesday" was their choice of cover this time around, but again their own compositions such as 'Last Exit Brooklyn' 'This Month's Messiah' (still a live fave) and 'You Don't Believe In Us' showed that despite the softened, too-laid-back production and textured sound, they still had 'that edge'. The album now adds two rarities from the original session.

Nazareth - Back To The Trenches 1972-84. Dble CD. (Castle - CMEDD725)

This highly entertaining double CD contains 31 tracks from six concerts spread across 12 years. What becomes quite obvious is the amazing quality consistency in Nazareth's live performances. The set starts in Canada in 1972 when Nazareth were promoting the Roger Glover-produced "Razamanazz". Their breakthrough hit "Broken Down Angel" first appears here as does the album title track. For the rest, we get the band's other major hits such as "Hair Of The Dog", "This Flight Tonight" and "Love Hurts". This is a beautifully packaged CD, with detailed sleeve notes including contributions from McCafferrty and Pete Agnew. Thoroughly recommended!

Nazareth - 2XS. CD. (Essential - ESMCD792)

1982 saw the introduction of Glaswegian guitarist Billy Rankin and ex-Spirit and Heart pianist John Locke, giving the band a new, more polished dimension. But they still kept the rock 'n' roll on this album, with classics like "Boys In The Band" and "Dream On".
