New York Dolls - Live From The Royal Festival Hall, 2004. CD. (Attack - CMFVD1389) After 27 years apart, the three surviving members of the New York Dolls, David Johansen, Sylvain Sylvain and Arthur 'Killer' Kane, re-united at London's Royal Festival Hall in 2004 at the behest of their number 1 uber-fan, Morrissey, as a part of the year's Meltdown Festival. The result was a stunning set played in front of the band's famous fans including Jonathan Ross, Bob Geldoff and Chrissie Hynde. Sadly, the show proved to be the final performance for bassist Arthur 'Killer' Kane who passed away shortly afterwards.

Not JUST any old compilation, but a 3 CD box set-two colecting all their pre-Mercury, pre-Todd, pre-Nolan demos and live recordings, some of which date back as far as 1972., added to which we get the beauty of the 'Red Patent Leather' live in NYC recording from 1975, as the world's greatest car crash screeches towards the end of its career and the Dolls let forth with an unruly barrage of new material, album tracks and covers (never officially included on any studio album). This is the first time all these tracks- long traded by aficionados- have been available on the same CD set. Until 2004 one would have normally ended this review with some pithet or other lamenting the fact that they're not around anymore. . . But happily for all of us, Sylvain and Johansen still are!! (NB- Freak Emporium realises it is tempting fate by stating this) For lonely planet boys and bad girls everywhere.
