1984/5 albums. Pat was still very much a rock artist at this point but the songs were now beginning to sound weighted down in their heavily synthesised production, and were leaning heavily toward pop in their presentation- furthermore, the industry's packaging of Pat as some kind of raunchy teenage sex symbol in ripped tights, rar-ra skirt and anklewarmers was seriously beginning to rankle with her, especially as by this point she was a 30-year old mother of two. You can almost feel the anger beneath the veneer. . . Tracks: Diamond Field, We Belong (the massive hit), Painted Desert (the one with the really WEIRD video), Temporary Heroes, Love In The Ice Age, Ooh Ooh Song, The Outlaw Blues, Suburban King, A Crazy World Like This, Takin' It Back, Sex As A Weapon (another rant against the male dominated music industry), Le Bel Age (Pat goes film noir), Walking In The Underground, Big Life, Red Vision, 7 Rooms Of Gloom (Four Tops cover), Run Between The Raindrops, Invincible (theme from the movie 'The Legend Of Billie Jean'), The Art Of Letting Go, Love Is A Battlefield (probabaly Pat's best known song, which is unfortunate as it only hints as to what her music actually sounds like).
1981/2 albums from premier US female rocker. The first retains the hard rock edge of its predecessors: the second, which is more synthesised and shows some incredible hairstyles on the cover, seems to almost be a concept album about city life, urban paranoia and anxieties. Tracks: Promises In The Dark, Fire And Ice, Just Like Me, Precious Time, It's A Tuff Life, Take It Any Way You Want It, Evil Genius, Hard To Believe, Helter Skelter, Shadows Of The Night, Looking For A Stranger, Anxiety (Get Nervous), Fight It Out, The Victim, Little Too Late, I'll Do It, I Want Out, Tell It To Her, Silent Partner
2 on 1 set of two albums, from 1983 and 1988 respectively. 18 tracks all together: the live album, which is fairly representative of her set at the time, includes a beautiful medley of 'I Want Out/We Live For Love/Hell Is For Children' that really comes across in the concert setting. 'Wide Awke In Dreamland', her 1988 studio recording, features her last ever UK hit single 'All Fired Up' and was a return to the starighahead hard rock values of her first two albums, stripped of the over-synthesised production that had besmirched even the best material on 'Seven The Hard Way' and 'Tropico'. The cover art also depicts a far more dressed-down Pat, now in control of her own image and no longer manipulated by cynical producers. Sadly this creative peak would be followed by the utter blues trough of 'True Love' in 1990: but we'll gloss over that for now. This was Pat's last real moment in the spotlight (despite some fine 90s albums, she never did click with the Courtney-obsessed post-grunge generation) and a such represents the end of an era.

1979/80 albums from the US songstress, featuring guitarist/hubby/songwriter Neil Gearldo and the wonderfully named drummer Myron Grombacher. A stunning mix of New Wave, AOR and metal, a la Rachel Sweet, Quarterflash and the late Laura Branigan, and one that has worn very well with time. Sweet/Chinn- Chapman), So Sincere, Treat Me Right, You Better Run, Never Wanna Leave You, Hit Me With Your Best Shot, (Pat's first UK hit) Hell Is For Children (the start of many Benatar trax to touch on 'difficult' lyrical themes well beyond the usual soft rock remit), Little Paradise, I'm Gonna Follow You, Wuthering Heights (Kate Bush cover, obviously), Prisoner of Love, Out-A-Touch.
