Artist Listing : Paul Robeson (3 products)

Paul Robeson - At Carnegie Hall. CD. (Vanguard Masters - VMD720202)

The legendary singer, actor and civil rights activist captured live at Carnegie Hall in 1958, at the age of 60. This concert was famous for the fact that Robeson announced to the cheering audience that his passport had been returned to him after having been revoked for eight years, after he refused to sign an affidavit denying that he was a communist. Released with the original album cover for the first time and with new sleeve notes that give an invaluable insight into what Robeson’s music meant in the context of the time.

Twenty eight track celebration of the gift given to the man from New Jersey. Actor, singer, communist? Pushed out of America from an early age due to his strong anti racist stance, Robeson set himself up in England and became a star before the US government confiscated his passport, believing the multi talented bass-baritone to be a dangerous subversive force. Included here are a number of his best vocal performances: "Go Down Moses", "The Cobbler's Song", "The Song Of Freedom" and "Ol' Man River."
