Principal Edwards Magic Theatre - Soundtrack / Asmoto Running Band. CD. (See For Miles - SEECD 412-D)

Back in print here are the first two and best albums by the UK theatrical progressive folk rock band who made two albums for John Peel's Dandelion label, the second of which was produced by Nick Mason of Pink Floyd. If you are looking for all out late' 60's hippy acid folk rock then this is the real deal. With a large band of musicians and a traveling circus troupe Principal Edwards Magic Theatre create a witchy magical LSD inspired brew of electric acid rock and off the wall whimsical folk (in places like Comus or Mormos) that is at it's peak on the Soundtrack album (1969) and in a more progressive vein on Asmoto Running Band. Totally beautiful, unhinged, incense imbued velveteen, floppy madness.

Principal Edwards Magic Theatre - Soundtrack. CD. (Cherry Red - CDMRED306)

If you are looking for all out late' 60's hippy acid folk rock then this is the real deal. With a large band of musicians and a traveling circus troupe Principal Edwards Magic Theatre created a witchy magical LSD inspired brew of electric acid rock and off the wall whimsical folk (in places like Comus or Mormos) The multi-media PEMT cut a compellingly original swathe through a late-1960s music scene seemingly inhabited by wall-to-wall blues bands. Their first ever gig was witnessed by benefactor and producer JohnPeel. The legendary DJ promptly signed them to his Dandelion label. 'I guess he liked what he heard,' says guitarist and chief songwriter Root Cartwright.A stand-alone single released before the first album, 'Ballad (Of The Big Girl Now And A Mere Boy)'/ 'Lament For The Earth', is included in this package as a bonus track.'Soundtrack' hit the record racks in August 1969, the third Dandelion long-player to be released in short order following debut efforts from folk singers Bridget St John and Beau.Totally beautiful, unhinged, incense imbued velveteen, floppy madness.

Principal Edwards Magic Theatre - Asmoto Running Band. CD. (Cherry Red - CDMRED307)

The second great album by this legendary late 60's early '70's progressive psychedelic folk rock band. The story so far: multi-media band Principal Edwards Magic Theatre, formed by a group of students at Exeter University, had signed to Radio 1 DJ John Peel's record label and released a stunning first album,'Soundtrack', in August 1969. Pink Floyd drummer Nick Mason was brought in to produce an equally superb second album, released in January1971. For his part, Mason is happy to recall those hazy days as best he could for this reissue. 'My memory of the recording was that I really enjoyed it. I must have done to some extent because I did two of them!

Principal Edwards Magic Theatre - Devon Tapes. CD. (Audio Archives - AACD 053)

A fascinating recent discovery of an unreleased fourth album by this ensemble of avant-garde graduates who were championed by John Peel, whose famous Dandelion label released their first two LPs.These recordings were made in 1974 soon after their third album ‘Round One’ was issued on the Deram label. By then they had become a more progressive orientated band compared with their earlier folk-rock leanings. These 9 songs feature twin keyboard players with lavish mini-moog work-outs, reminiscent of Manfred Mann’s Earthband at times, with opening track ‘The Beast’ and centrepiece ‘Helix’, perfect examples. The six-piece line-up features several original members of the earlier incarnation of the group including guitarist and mainman Root Cartwright and the haunting vocals of Belinda Bourquin, who also plays some superb violin as well as keyboards.Another track worthy of special mention here is a song called ‘Over And Out’ which was earmarked for a single. This beautifully haunting song is a dead-ringer of Mellow Candle’s ‘Swaddling Songs’ style, in fact you would be hard pressed to tell the difference.
