Queen - A Day At The Races. CD. (Parlophone Records - CDP7894932)

Queen's fifth album, released in 1976. Effectively a companion album to their masterpiece A Night At The Opera from the previous year, (both named after Marx Brother's films), it follows on the vast sound they had worked on from '73 onward. Produced by themselves, this was more of the glorious multi track vocals, huge drums, and fabulous guitar lines. Although still wonderfully over the top in places, they have actually pared down the theatrics (slightly) for this release and focussed their attentions on precise pop songs (ther certainly isn't a collossus like Bohemiam Rhapsody or Prophet Song on this album), this trend would continue on the rest of their '70's work. A truly wonderful album filled with more brave songwriting and imaginative production. Includes: "You Take My Breath Away", "Good Old Fashioned Lover Boy", "The Millionaire Waltz" and "Teo Torriatte (Let Us Cling Together.)"

Queen - Game. CD. (Parlophone Records - CDP7894962)

Surprisingly paired down production work compared to Queens usual multi layered studio recordings. This 1979 release finds the group incorporating yet another style in their already wide spectrum (Funk) and the first appearance of keyboards. While this would mean their next album "Hot Space" would pretty much die in the studio because of these new influences, it breathes new life into the four piece's songs. John Deacon must have welcomed the change, you can actually hear his fine playing on some of the tracks rather than being buried under Mays ego/guitar layers and Taylor's hair raising shrieking and Zeppelin inspired colossal drum riffing. Notably the songs seem to quickly change into being more standard compared to their kitchen sink/ every chord under the sun approach of old. Ranging from the classic "Another One Bites The Dust", Taylor's New Wave "Rock It (Prime Jive)", May's sweet ballad "Sail Away Sweet Sister" and Mercury's Elvis tribute "Crazy Little Thing Called Love", this is a group embracing their new producer Mack and the changing music scene. One of their best selling worldwide albums.

Queen - Innuendo. CD. (Parlophone Records - CDP7958872)

Queen's final album of completely original material, recorded and released shortly before Freddie Mercury's death. It is interesting to hear this album now, considering that the group had no idea how much longer they had before Aids killed their lead singer. This explains the surprisingly autobiographical lyrics of "These Are The Days Of Our Lives" and "The Show Must Go On" and the group pulling out all of the stops to create a fitting finale. The Title track is a wonderful return to the Queen of old, comparable (although not as barmy) in structure to Bohemiam Rhapsody with its genre switching, big guitar riffing, lush vocals and six minute length. You are struck throughout this album at how strong Freddies vocals had become and how adventurous the group still were. There was still room for little ditties about his cats, big guitar solos ("Bijou"), Gospel influences, classic pop songs and chunky rockers. Highly emotive throughout and still a lot of fun, this is pure Queen.

Queen - Made In Heaven. CD. (Parlophone Records - CDPCSD167)

The remaining members of Queen took four years to put this album together, it was always going to be an emotional process working through the very last vocal contributions Freddie Mercury made before dying from Aids. Originally released in 1995, it is actually made up of vocals culled from the groups solo careers and Queen b-sides reworked by the band. All of the original tracks, such as Freddies final song "You Don't Fool Me" and the brilliant "Heaven For Everyone"all have notably dark lyrics, tales of love gone wrong, betrayal and a longing for peace. At times "Mother Love" can be hard to hear if it weren't for a brilliantly emotive lead vocal typical of the late singer. A surprisingly autumnal album, there is little humour here but plenty of reflection and hope. Only the older tracks have that classic upbeat Queen feel, this is a new, mature group.

Queen - Works. CD. (Parlophone Records - CDP7894982)

The staple '80's Queen album, the group refocusing their efforts after the flop of Hot Space. Moving between old school rockers, synth pop classics, 50's pastiches and tender ballads, this is a group in typically adventurous form. Still embracing the synth sounds of the '80's, Brian May's guitar has been turned back up for some classic rockers like "Tear It Up" and "Hammer To Fall", his ode to the dangers of Nuclear weapons. Notably he is asked to more unusual things as their recording sessions became less organised and more spontaneous, his muted performance on "Radio Ga Ga", unusually effected solo on "I Want To break Free" and rockabilly solo on "Man On The Prowl" are surprising highlights. At only nine tracks long, Queen don't waste a single bar of music here. This is a lean, taught group fighting to win back their place as best group in the world.

Queen - A Night At The Opera. CD. (Parlophone Records - 3384782)

THE Queen album to own of the '70's. Packed with experiments in genre, style, pace and studio effects, it is a bombastic group at its daring best. Featuring first rate melodies, superb playing (instrumental and vocally) and a grand scale rarely seen in throwaway pop music before or since, it is a stunnig, highly lstenable achievement. It's so good that it isn't just known as "that one with Bohemian Rhapsody on it", which is a feat in itself. Remastered. Includes the classic "You're My Best Friend", live favourite "Love Of My Life" and "Prophet Song" a track threatening to top even it's jewel in the crown "Bohemian Rhapsody." Utterly esential.

Queen - Hot Space. CD. (Parlophone Records - CDP7894972)

Still a shock to the system, this is where one of the bravest Rock groups of the era decided to go out and out Disco in 1982. Their one flop album out of a twenty year (and counting if you include the Paul Rodgers led tour and planned recording sessions) career, it contains only one song that would make it onto Greatest Hits II. Happily it is one of their most brilliant tracks, the emotive "Under Pressure" featuring David Bowie. Definitely not as bad as originally thought, the skillful songwriting abilities are still there, something that would never leave them, but they are buried under layerss of production that no Queen would ever expect to hear on one of their records. Considering the direction of their '80's albums, this is hugely important in the turn around for the band and it does include some real forgotten gems like "Las Palabras De Amor (The Words Of Love)", "Life Is Real" and "Action This Day."

Queen - Greatest Hits I. dbl DVD. (Parlophone Records - 4929449)

Double DVD compiling all of the Queen promos and a few live rarities from the '70's. Although they didn't often get a chance to create such colourful videos like Bohemian Rhapsody for their single releases, they often preferred to show themselves performing the track "live" (an interesting and amusing commentary from Brian May and Roger Taylor reveal how they wanted to push that side of their career harder than the multi layered results they got in the studio). Essential for the surround sound 5.1 mix, the audio revealing many multi channel delights. Extras include a great documentary with Brian May sat at the mixing desk, going through each stage of the recording of Bo Rap and documentaries discussing the band during the '70's.

Queen - Kind Of Magic. CD. (Parlophone Records - CDP7462672)

1986 album by Queen, partly a soundtrack to the motion picture Highlander. Released as a new studio album, the lyrics almost entirely revolve around the films themes and quotes (A Kind Of Magic is a line from the film) and virtually all of them play a part in the first two films. Tracks like "Who Wants To Live Forever" and the largely ignored gem "Princes Of The Universe" perfectly highlight how the group could still write concise, memorable ballads and rock songs this far into their career. Originally a nine track album, this version has been expanded wih three bonus tracs: and alternative version of A Kind Of Magic", the 12" version of "Friends Will Be Friends" and a piano led instrumental called "Forever."

Queen - Live Killers. Dble CD. (Parlophone Records - 5924142)

1979 live album that highlights Queen's powerful ability in front of a live audience. Recorded over the European leg of their "Jazz" album tour, these twenty two tracks are extracts from numerous shows to create the best possible live experience on record. It also shows off some lesser known tracks, drawing from all of their albums up to that point:: "Dreamers Ball", "Brighton Rock" and "Don't Stop Me Now" rarely appeared in their set lists after this tour and are a welcome treat for the collector.

Queen - News Of The World. CD. (Parlophone Records - CDP7894942)

1977 finds Queen reaching their '70's height on the live stage. Their sixth release reflects this with it's grandstand double whammy start of "We Will Rock You" and "We Are The Champions." As ever this release finds the four songwriters playing around in any genre they damn well feel like: Blues, Salsa, funk, proto punk piano ballads and more! Special attention has to be given to the closer "My Melanchly Blues", Freddie at his most captivating and glorious. Maybe not as career defining as earlier albums, it is still a brilliant listen that is filled with individual highlights and triumphs. A real pleasure of an album.

Queen - Queen Rock Montreal. Dble CD. (Parlophone Records - 504 0472)

When Queen returned for the fourth time to Montreal’s 18,000 seater Forum in November 198, the group had spent the best part of two years on the road. Straight after their triumphant Latin American tours, the worldwide success of The Game album and their recent Greatest Hits volume one, the group were on peak form and still in their full pomp (despite the more conservative haircuts). This tour features arguably Freddie's greatest vocal performances, two years on the road had honed his voice and his physical form into a much more powerful shape. Don't think that this is just another 80's era concert album, there is still classics like: "Keep Yourself Alive", "I'm In Love With My Car", "Sheer Heart Attack" and "Let Me Entertain You", as well as Roger Taylor's timpani solo! A real top draw live performance, showing a band on the cusp of stadium superstardom.
