Radiohead - Ultimate Tribute To - Various Artists. CD. (Redline - REDLINE12)

It had to come- a collection of tracks paying homage to that most beloved (by many) band of modern progsters, Radiohead. Despite still being a relatively recent band, they have influenced many acts in the last 10-15 years, and some of them queue up here to have a crack at 'How To Disappear Completely' 'Planet Telex' 'Everything In Its Right Place' and several other intricate and perplexing pieces of music. And on the other side; some tracks by the bands that influenced the 'Head themselves, such as Nico, The Chameleons and Hawkwind. Interesting and ultimately rewarding.

Radiohead - Hail To The Thief. Dble LP. (Parlophone Records - 584 5431)

2003 LP release, which finds Radiohead perfectly mixing their Rock past with their recent endeavour into electronica. A real development lyrically, Thom now now vents his anger through intelligent metaphors and the odd random lyrics against the preying on fame seeking children by the pop industry "We Suck Young Blood", the government "2 + 2 = 5" and relationships "Where I End And You Begin." A reliant theme in their work, here is that foreboding sense of uncertainty and fear here, expressed through tribal drums, punk outbursts, drum and bass esque electronica explosions and Yorkes layered vocal style. A highly recommended album, embracing all that is relevant and great about the group.

Radiohead - I Might Be Wrong (Live). CD. (Parlophone Records - CDFHEIT 45104)

Eight track live recording of Radiohead released just after they rejected their prog inclinations and turned more electronic. Live, Radiohead had been breathing life into their Kid A/Amnesiac studio project. Here, songs like "Everything In It's Right Place", "Idioteque" and "Like Spinning Plates" sound better than the studio versions, the group really experimenting with the whole arrangements and vibe of the pieces. Featuring the first ever on record version of "True Love Waits", a track they have been playing around with for years. A beautifully stripped down song, featuring a soleThom Yorke and an acoustic guitar, this is a perfect example of the many genres Radiohead can comfortably switch between and master. For the serious collector/fan.

Radiohead - The Bends. LP. (Parlophone Records - PCS 7372)

The first real suggestion that Radiohead could be something special, this '95 release is now rightly considered a classic. A real surprise to fans who came to the group late (ie. OK Computer) this is the group at their most straightforward and yearning, using barely any keyboards, no samples and singing about stuff that is (relatively) easy to follow, if not a little unusual ("My Iron Lung") this is the album to fall in love with. Their later albums can be seen as the cerebral, the deliberate attempt to move away from guitar music clichés and experiment, this on the other hand is the heart of the group, an honest, moving record that is quite possibly their most rewarding and listenable LP. Completely separate from its contemporaries in that era, a sign of a truly great album. Includes: the magical "High And Dry", "Street Spirit (Fade Out)", "Black Star" and "Planet Telex."

Radiohead - OK Computer. Dble LP. (Parlophone Records - NODATA 02)

Their third and defining album, this is Radiohead building upon the genius of The Bends and cranking up the pre-millenial tension and sense of isolation. There is a real sense of energy to this record (largely recorded on overnight sessions) , listen to "Exit Music (For A Film)", it's humble acoustic strumming turning into fuzz bass, distorted drums and etheral keyboards explodes and than just as quickly dissapears, the same loud bit quiet bit device is used on the stunning "Paranoid Android." Rarely has there been a commercial album in the modern era that has tried so hard to make electric guitars sound not like electric guitars, to push away an audience and at the same time pull them in. This for many is their peak, never again would they pour so much emotion onto tape. It is interesting to hear "Fitter Happier" now, the Steven Hawkins voice and Revolution #9 esque piano/effects backing appears now as a pre cursor to their Kid A days, removing the human element while still telling a powerful message. An essential '90's album.

Radiohead - Pablo Honey. LP. (Parlophone Records - PCS 7360)

The one with "Creep" on it. A fine example of a group on the verge of a group avoiding the cliché of being a one hit wonder and dissapearing soon after. Eaasily Radiohead's most unpolished and unfocussed album, it proves a fascinating listen into the preThe Bends stylings of Thom Yorke. Already certain aspects of them are here, the odd lone acoustic strum, the loud bit quiet bit, extended instrumentals, squalling lead guitars, surprisingly high pitch vocals and that sense of Radiohead simply being a bit different from the rest of the pack. Songs that shine through well are: "Stop Whispering", "Anyone Can Play Guitar", easily their most poppy and singalong chorus and "How Do You." Anyone looking for an eas way into the group should start here, their most accessable and album with little angst.

Radiohead - My Iron Lung (B-Sides Collection). CD EP. (Parlophone Records - 831 4782)

Eight track EP, collecting together their early B-sides from the Pablo Honey era. Not quite the link between their first album and The Bends, but a great stripped down version of the group that reveals a lot. They never seem to be quite so serious on their B-Sides (and they often reveal a hidden gem or two.) There is however the odd indication of their progression, The Bends track My Iron Lung with it's changing time signatures and arrangements shows that they were on the very cusp of greatness. Track listing: "My Iron Lung", album highlight "The Trickster", "Lewis (Mistreated)", "Punchdrunk Lovesick Singalong", "Permanent Daylight", "Lozenge Of Love", "You Never Wash Up After Yourself (Live)" and an acoustic version of their early monster hit/potential albatross single "Creep"

Radiohead - Airbag / How Am I Driving?. CD EP. (Emi Gold - 858 7012)

Originally released in the US off the back of OK Computer, this seven track EP makes a return. Similar in style to the recent COM LAG album, it is a compilation of the b-sides released by the group in 1997, a number of the tracks became live favourites and were much sort after in territories where the material wasn't freely available and among the more hardcore fans out there. An interesting collection as it previews the very early experiments in electronica the band were working with, sounds that would eventually become Kid A.Track listing: "Airbag", "Pearly", "Meeting In The Aisle", "Reminder", "Polythene", "Melatonin" and "Palo Alto".
