Sonny Boy Williamson - Down And Out Blues/ In Memorium. CD. (B.G.O. Records - BGOCD603)

First time as a 2 on 1 CD for these 1959 and 1965 LPs, originally released on the Chess record label. Players on these albums read like a who's who of classic blues legends, including Willie Dixon on bass, Muddy Waters on guitar, Jimmy Rogers on guitar and Otis Spann on piano among many others. Sonny Boy Williamson was himself a blues legend who played with Robert Johnson at the start of his career and Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page and Robbie Robertson at the end of it. In between, he drank a lot of whiskey, had a successful radio show for 15 years, toured Europe to great acclaim and sang some of the greatest blues ever recorded. He also wrote 'Don't Start Me Talkin'- a song turned into a trash rock classic by the New YorK Dolls, and then returned full circle 30 years later as an acoustic blues number by Dolls frontman David Johansen!! Full sleevenotes by Tony Russell.

Sonny Boy Williamson - With The Yardbirds Feat. Clapton, Animals, Page & Auger. Dble CD. (Music Avenue - 250155)

Sonny Boy Williamson was, in more ways then one, the ultimate Blues legend. On the day of his death in 1965, he had lived long enough to have played with Robert Johnson at the birth of his career and with Eric Clapton and Jimmy Page at the conclusion of it. In between, he drank a lot of booze, wandered around the country, had a successful radio show for 15 years, reaped great success on European tours, and basically wrote, played and sang some of the greatest Blues ever stamped into black flat plastic phonograph records. In 1963 he came over to Europe and started performing in the young British beat club circuit, touring and recording with the Yardbirds, the Animals, and with Jimmy Page and Brian Auger. With the white Blues-Rock bands playing full blast behind him, he'd pull out every juke-joint trick in the book, and then some, and drive the audience into frenzy. Disc 1, tracks 1-11 were recorded at the Crawdaddy Club in Richmond with The Yardbirds featuring Eric Clapton, February 1964, tracks 12-22 were recorded with The Animals featuring Eric Burdon at the Club-A-Go-Go, Newcastle, December 1963. All tracks on disc 2 were recorded in the studio with Jimmy Page and Brian Auger, January 1965.
