Steeleye Span - Ten Man Mop Or Mr Reservoir Butler Rides Again. Dble CD. (Castle - CMRCD1252)

The last Steeleye Span album to feature the man who kickstarted the band - Ashley Hutchings. Not only that, but the album some believe to be their very finest work. It definitely features their finest recorded song to date 'Gower Wassail' alongside other masterpieces such as 'When I Was On Horseback' (later 'adapted' by Mike Oldfield on 'Ommadawn') and 'Wee Weaver' as well as the bonus track 'General Taylor' previously unreleased anywhere. An album which sums up exactly what is so vibrant and exciting about English folk music, and a demonstration of its richness and power- now available finally on CD for the first time in ages with the proper artwork and a bonus disc which includes Radio One in concert with John Peel (previously unreleased).

Steeleye Span - Tempted And Tried. CD. (B.G.O. Records - BGOCD537)

Still going strong in the '80's Steeleye Span released this excellent record in 1989 whilst packing venues up and down the UK. Very much in the mould of their early '70's recordings it has all the classic elements with female/male vocal harmonies, quality production and that perfect blend of olde English folk and electric rock. Features detailed sleeve notes.

1980 release. Tracks: Sails Of Silver; My Love; Barnet Fair; Senior Service; Gone To America; Where Are They Now; Let Her Go Down; Longbone; Marigold/Harvest Home; Tell Me Why. Still a folk group, but far rockier and 'AOR' than they had ever been.

Steeleye Span - Rocket Cottage. CD. (B.G.O. Records - CD318)

1976 album. Tracks: London; The Bosnian Hornpipes; Orfeo; Nathan's Reel; The Twelve Witches; The Brown Girl; Fighting For Strangers; Sligo Maid; Sir James The Rose; The Drunkard. The Span were by this time feeling punk snap at their heels, but whereas most bands of their era dithered and dallied, they just plunged head first into the tradition they were so fond of, and delivered another exceptionally fine album.Trivia point: similar to Bad Company's "Burnin Sky" in that it features a hidden track consisting of the band singing covers drunkenly in the studio!!

Steeleye Span - Please To See The King. Dble CD. (Castle - CMQDD1253)

The second album in and already the lineup changes had started. . . less than a year since the release of 'Hark The Village Wait', we find Steeleye sans (no pun intended) Gay And Terry Woods, replaced by godlike guitarist Martin Carthy and Peter Knight on violin. With tracks like 'The Blacksmith' and 'Female Drummer' this was yet another exciting chapter in the development of electric folk, and showed them willing to take the tradition in entirely new directions- indeed, the bonus track is a cover of Buddy Holly's "Rave On" that showed how wide their range of infuences was. Another classic, unavailable on CD for far too long, now rereleased with the original artwork and a bonus disc that features 17 tracks of BBC sessions.

Steeleye Span - Hark! The Village Wait. CD. (Castle - CMRCD1251)

Finally out on CD, (in its original sleeve), after a long absence, and if ever there was an album deserving of its reputation as legendary, it would be this one. The debut from Steeleye Span, formed after Ashley Hutchings' escape from Fairport Convention toward a more traditional set-up. He would eventually leave this band too, as they also employed more amd more rock guitars and moved in a 'dark' direction, but for five minutes in 1970, he was the creator, alongside Gay And Terry Woods, Tim Hart and Maddy Prior, of the finest folk rock album in existence. It wouldn't last long, nor would this lineup: but the impact this album had on electric folk music, to say nothing of laying the foundations for one of the scene's quintessential bands, cannot be overestimated. Stand-out tracks include 'The Dark Eyed Sailor' 'My Johnny Was A Shoemaker' and 'One Night As I Lay On My Bed', but in truth it's all seminal.
