Strawbs - Baroque And Roll. CD. (Witchwood Media - WRCD2004)

Superb 2001 album on the bands own label featuring acoustic re-workings of classic Strawbs songs and a line-up of Dave Cousins, Dave Lambert and Brian Willoughby. Backed by a small orchestra this slimmed down line-up of the band evoke all the magic of the earlier years with beautiful re-workings of, amongst others, "Tears and Pavan" "The Golden Salamander" and "Benedictus" plus a few new songs as well. Excellent.

Strawbs - Bursting At The Seams. CD. (A&M Records - 540 936-2)

1973 album that broke the Strawbs nationally. This was not as you would expect a straight forward rock affair, but one that dabbled in progressive and psychedelic textures whilst giving us some excellent hit singles such as "Lay Down" (written after eating Magic Mushrooms!) and the totally unrepresentative "Part Of The Union" (for which the band are remembered...). Now remastered with three bonus tracks and annotation by Dave Cousins.

Strawbs - Déjà Fou. CD. (Witchwood Media - WMCD 2020)

The 2004 album by the Strawbs sees a return of the classic Cousins, Lambert, Cronk, Coombes and Hawken line-up and the album certainly has the feel of the bands mid to late '70's recordings. Some excellent new songs include a Cousins epic in the shape of "Russian Front" and instruments such as The Mellotron and mandolin recall the bands earlier days. In all a great new Strawbs album from a band still going strong!

Strawbs - From The Witchwood. CD. (A&M Records - 540 939-2)

Much underrated UK band who mixed eastern sitar sounds with English folk and rock, whilst keeping a keen melodic sensibility. This stunner from 1971, featured the keyboard talents of Rick Wakeman and is a landmark electric folk rock album. Digitally remastered with a previously unreleased bonus track and new sleeve notes by Dave Cousins....

Strawbs - Ghosts. CD. (A4M - 540 937 2)

Excellent 1975 album by a band that had started to move in a progressive rock direction. With Dave Lambert (ex The Fire) and ex members of Renaissance and Steelers Wheel The Strawbs had started to make waves in America. Ghosts contains the epic title track and Dave Cousins' songs are generally given a more complex rock treatment- never better demonstrated on 'The Life Auction', which for anyone who's ever been to the West London suburb of Southall, is lyrically self explanatory!!. However the more whimsical side of the bands character is retained on tracks such as "Lemon Pie" and "Grace Darling". One of rocks most underrated ensembles... Remastered with a bonus track

Strawbs - Grave New World - The Film/Live In Tokyo 1975 (NTSC). DVD. (Witchwood Records - WMDVD 2009)

Back in 1972 The Strawbs released their classic album Grave New World. What is not so well known is the fact that the band made a film to go with the album (much like a modern video) that went round the cinema's briefly, with ELP's Pictures At An Exhibition. A brilliant document of the time it is the perfect visual accompaniment to the record. Likewise the band performed blistering shows in Japan in 1975 on the Hero and Heroine tour that are also featured here. Bonus features include the band on Granada TV with Rick Wakeman in 1970. Superb picture and sound quality and one of the best archive DVD issues by any '70's band. NTSC Region 0. Stereo.

A collection of tracks culled from 1988's reunion album Don't Say Goodbye along with other late period recordings by the band showing that they still had the old magic in them. Featuring the excellent " Something For Nothing" as long as the anguished title track "Heartbreak Hill" this was another worthy addition to the bands catalogue.

Strawbs - Live At Nearfest 2004. CD. (Witchwood Media - WMCD 2026)

Recorded live in 2004 at the famed Pennsylvania prog-rock festival , with a fully reunited 'Hero And Heroine' lineup (Cousins, Lambert, Cronk, Hawken, Coombes) and a set culled from that album and its successor 'Ghosts' among others- the most proggy period of the band. Essential for all lovers of pure Britwiddly.

Strawbs - Nomadness. CD. (Progressive Line - PL517)

Classic 1976 album by the much loved UK band. An array of progressive styles with the Genesis like "To Be Free" and the Who like riff of "Little Sleepy." it also features the bluesy torch song "Absent Friend" with some fine piano work and pensive electric guitar. Rick Wakeman even shows up to pitch in an electric harpsichord part on "Tokyo Rosie.", whilst Euro release singles 'A Mind Of My Own' and 'The Promised Land', despite not achieving hit status, were played on drivetime and daytime radio for years!!! Unjustly neglected on its release by fans bewildered by the band's sudden reinvention of its sound, in retrospect this album easily stands among the best of their work.

Strawbs - Painted Sky. CD. (Witchwood Records - WMCD 2028)

Now the Strawbs are three grown-up men. The drums are gone, the electric guitars gather dust somewhere, and these three focus on blending their acoustic guitars into a sound that seems old and new at the same time. Or at least they do on this album. . .this is a recording by the 'acoustic' lineup (Cousins.Hooper/Lambert), as opposed to the electric band that tours featuring Cousins, Dave Lambert, Hudson, Ford, Blue Weaver etc, or the lineup that tours the US playing their hard rock orientated late 70s material. Still every part as magical as their best material was, and a worthy followup to 'Blue Angel' and 'Deja Fou'.

Strawbs - Preserves Uncanned. Dble CD. (RGF - WCDCD003)

Finally back in stock! If you love the Strawbs first two late '60's albums (Strawbs/Dragonfly) then this double set is pretty much essential as it's taken from the same period. With alternative versions of "The Man Who Called Himself Jesus" "Pieces Of 79 & 15" "I'll Show You Where To Sleep" and "Where Is The Dream Of Your Youth" there's also a huge selection of previously unreleased material. Beautiful late '60's UK psych tinged folk.

Strawbs - Burning For You. CD. (Witchwood Media - WMCD2035)

1977 release by the UK folk rock giants, their second on Oyster Records. It has a cracking opening with the moody title track and the live favourite "Cut Like A Diamond." Strawbs - Deep Cuts/Burning For You. Dble CD. (RGF - WCDCD027)

1976 and 1977 albums that captured some of the Strawbs earlier lyrical atmospherics whilst moving in a more mainstream rock direction "Deep Cuts" does contain the superb "Beside the Rio Grande" a kind of Wild West re-write of "The Hangman and the Papist" whilst the opening track on Burning For You ("Burning For Me") and "Cut Like A Diamond" are two of the best tracks the band recorded (the latter is still performed live)

Strawbs - Deep Cuts. CD. (Witchwood Records - WMCD2031)

This 1976 album was designed to re-establish the band in the UK market. The single "I Only Want My Love To Grow In You" was a radio smash, but didn't chart (or did it?. . . ) As well as the single, some of the songs on Deep Cuts were among the strongest the band ever recorded; the evil, snarling "Beside The Rio Grande" revives the epic sound and moral outrage of Grave New World in its tale of a frontier minister’s grisly religious martyrdom, while the pleasant strumming of "Thinking Of You" soft-shoes its way through a music hall love song, and tracks like 'Turn Me Round' 'Hard Hard Winter' and 'My Friend Peter' lean towards AOR.. The album has been re-mastered from the original tapes and includes "You Won’t See The Light", a previously unreleased bonus track written by guitarist Dave Lambert. Trivia Corner: the band themselves may not have had any hits this year, but keyboardist/arranger/producer Rupert Holmes (who was only with the band for half this album before being replaced by John Mealing) had one two years later with the infamous 'Pina Colada Song'. . .

Strawbs - NY 75. CD. (Witchwood Media - WMCD2041)

‘NY ’75’ was recorded live in front of a wildly enthusiastic audience at the legendary Calderone Theatre on Long Island, just half an hour from the centre of Manhattan. This is the first release of this concert on CD.The album shows how the Strawbs stage show had evolved from its early folk-inspired tunes into an almost continuous symphonic sequence of hard-hitting songs. The Strawbs came on stage in a blackout to a long-lost taped introduction, ‘Still Small Voice’. Among the established classics such as ‘Hero and ‘Heroine’ and ‘Ghosts’ were new offerings including ‘The Promised Land’, ‘To Be Free’, and ‘Hanging In The Gallery’ which have never appeared before on a live Strawbs album
