Styx - Cyclorama. dualdisc. (Silverline - 2845762)

Dualdisc reissue of 2003-released album from Chicago arena AOR giants- featuring a lineup of Tommy Shaw, James Young, Lawrence Gowan, Glen Burtnik and Todd Sucherman, with contributions from original bassist Chuck Panozzo. This is easily their rockiest and heaviest album since 'Pieces Of Eight' in 1978, and features a band who by all accounts should have been ravaged by tragedy and line-up changes rocking out with renewed joir de vivre and enjoyment. Standout tracks include 'Bourgeois Pig' (featuring Billy Bob Thornton) 'Fields Of The Brave' and 'Killing The One That You Love' as well as the ludicrously daft 'Kiss Your Ass Goodbye' on which the band try to afiliate themselves with pop-punk!! Dualdisc format features music on one side, photos, lyrics and DVD footage on t'other.

Styx - Hits From Yesterday And Today- Recorded Live. CD. (Collectables - COLCD8468)

A budget priced live collection from the Chicago AOR giants, concentrating largely on the newer material from their last three albums but with a few classics ('Grand Illusion' 'Fooling Yourself' 'Too Much Time On My Hands' and an enchanced video of 'Renegade') thrown in for good measure.

Styx - Return To Paradise. Dble CD. (Sanctuary Records - SANDD036)

Live 2-CD set of the band's 1996 reunion tour, featuring material from Paradise Theater and many other classic AOR hits. Sadly this was to be the last tour Chuck Panozzo and Dennis DeYoung would undertake with the band, the latter disappearing off to write musicals with his wife whilst the former not only came out as gay, but found he had to live with AIDS. For a short while though, this was as close as one got to representing the essence of AOR in one definitive statement. The songs- 'Lady' 'Lorelei' 'Suite Madame Blue' 'Come Sail Away' 'The Best Of Times' 'The Grand Illusion' 'Crystal Ball' 'Blue Collar Man' 'Fooling Yourself' 'Renegade' 'Boat On The River' etc- speak for themselves.

Styx - Styxworld Live 2001. CD. (Sanctuary Records - SANCD088)

AOR supergroup Styx made a triumphant return to the world’s stages with their first global tour since 1982. Besides a smattering of their original classics, Styxworld introduces three new songs, ‘High Enough’, (recorded during Shaw's stint in Damn Yankees with Jack Blades and Ted Nugent) ‘A Criminal Mind’ and ‘Sometimes Love Just Ain’t Enough’, plus three other songs which they’ve never before performed in concert.

Styx - Return To Paradise. DVD. (Sanctuary Midline - SVEM0239)

Absolutely excellent and storming performance from the Autumnal Equinox, 1996- recorded live in the band's hometown of Chicago in front of a HUGE audience, and featuring four members of the classic lineup- Tommy Shaw, Dennis De Young, James Young and Chuck Panozzo- together for the last time befor egos and terminal illness got the better of them. The setist is exemplary: 'Rockin The Paradise' 'Lady' 'Too Much Time On My hands' 'Blue Collar Man' 'Suite Madame Blue' 'Crystal Ball' 'Fooling Yourself' 'Boat On The River' 'Lorelei' 'Come Sail Away'. . .does one need to go on? This should be shown to people as a lesson in how to stage a consummate rock concert. Digitally remastered, with full band history, discography, interviews and DVD-ROM gubbins- but to be honest the music alone is reason enough for buying it.

Styx - Equinox/Crystal Ball. CD. (B.G.O. Records - BGOCD724)

An excellent twofer that documents a transitional crossroads in the career of the Chicagoan pomp-rock Methuselahs. 'Equinox' (1975) was the first album (the band's fifth) to be released on the major label A&M, and contained such classics as 'Light Up' and 'Suite Madame Blue': conversely, it was also the last to feature guitarist and vocalist John Curlewski, who left shortly after the release of the hit single 'Lorelei'. He was replaced in time for the ensuing tour by poster-boy and soon-to-be rock icon Tommy Shaw, who made his studio debut with the band on 'Crystal Ball' (1976) the second album included here: highlights include 'Mademoiselle' and 'This Old Man' among others. The three-strong vocal line of Shaw, James Young and Dennis De Young shot to world stardom and never looked back, but without these two pivotal albums- where progressive pomp rock became AOR- it may never have happened. Digitally remastered and slipcased.
