Tom Waits - Asylum Years. CD. (Warner Music - 7559-60494-2)

A selection of recordings made for the Asylum label in the 70's by one of America's finest song writers. Here is some Tom's best material 'Diamonds On My Windshield', 'Martha', 'Small Change' and 'Ruby's Arms'. Distinctive, evocative and emotional are the by-words for these songs. Hard to pigeon hole somewhere between blues, folk, country and poetry.

Tom Waits - Early Years Volume 1. LP. (Get Back - GET637)

Before turning into that dramatic minstrel of human misery and sorrow and adopting his Brechtian/Theatre Of The Absurd persona, Tom Waits was a more gentle and romantically affectionate songwriter. This album collects early demos recorded by a 21-year-old Tom Waits in 1971, two years before the release of his first album, Closing Time. Here Waits accompanies himself on piano or guitar in a solo performance (only one track, "Ice Cream Man," features other musicians.). Several songs contained here, like "Ice Cream Man," "Virginia Ave.," "Midnight Lullabye," and "Little Trip to Heaven," would appear on his later albums, but fans will highly appreciate this collection that provides an overall visual of this bizarre artist.

Tom Waits - Blood Money. CD. (Anti - 66292)

"Blood Money" is one of two 2002 albums released simultaneously by the Godfather of drunken American folk music, Tom Waits. It's been three years since his last release but it has been worth the wait. Jazz, blues, ballads and many other styles are recognizable in this album. And all played by the best musicians available (Charlie Musselwhite on harmonica, Larry Taylor on bass, etc). Tom Waits has once again come up with the goods - let's hope we don't have to wait another three years for the next one!

Tom Waits - Alice. CD. (Anti - 66322)

One of two 2002 albums released simultaneously by Tom Waits (who has referred to this one as a collection of "opiate songs"). "Alice" is unmistakeably Waits with his usual eclectic choice of instrumentation (mellotron, viola, clarinet, marimba, pump organ - the list goes on) and equally eclectic song styles (ballads to east European folk marches). Superb musicians together with Waits' voice make this sound like Bertholt Brecht meeting Captain Beefheart in a seedy LA dive. Bourbon, anyone?

Tom Waits - Under Review 1983- 2006. DVD. (Sexy Individual - SIDVD530)

80 minute documentary DVD, which looks at this extraordinary musician and performer’s music during that period. After Waits’ marriage to Katherine Brennan in 1980, his music became more experimental, challenging and left field, but without any compromise of his craft the songs were better than ever. Through album after album during the 1980s, the 1990s and the 2000s, Waits stunned his audience time and again. This program looks again at these records, and the man who made them, and in doing so provides the most enlightening, revealing and downright entertaining Tom Waits documentary yet to emerge.
