Vaarstraat 66 - Vaarstraat 66. CD. (Two Thumbs - TTCD 003) Brand new (2006) Scottish based psych band who make a crazy sound that draws on psychedelic pop music of all eras but at the same time remains original and fresh. The opening track "Planet Freakout" is pretty indicative of the eclectic nature of the album mixing the whimsy of early Pink Floyd, the cheekiness of the Monkees and the insane oddness of later Flaming Lips and Mr. Bungle. Obscure 60's musical references are also tossed around to create a bubbling weird pop psike brew that all times remains inventive. The album continues shoving various references through the audio mincer including everything from Zappa, through The Electric Prunes to The Beach Boys. You really couldn't ask for a more psychedelic album loaded as it is with fuzz guitars, keyboards, flute, harpsichord, disturbing lyrics and track titles such as "Where's My Mind" and "Cat with a Pig's Head". Disturbed genius!
