Van Der Graaf Generator - World Record. CD. (Charisma - CASCDR1120)

Remaster of the album originally released in 1976, this was the last full length album from the important and unique UK progressive rockers, shortly before they removed the 'Generator' from their name, copped the early run of the New Wave, and subsequently disbanded. Five long tracks, filled with the artistry and inventiveness by now expected, and all crowned with Hammill's vocal and lyrical stylings. Next to the ponderous and brooding 'Muerglys' (a song about Hammill's guitar) which showed the band experimenting with reggae influences, and the aggressive, shrieking 'When She Comes' the highlight this time was the tender ballad (by VDGG standards obviously) 'Wondering', which was released as a single (and obviously flopped). Contains expanded 16 page colour booklet and bonus live versions of "When She Comes" & "Masks" both lifted from the John Peel show November 1976.

Van Der Graaf Generator - Vital. Dble CD. (Virgin Records - CVLCDR 101)

Remastered double CD of the album first released in 1978, this is a fine live testament to the power and artistry of one of the UK's favourite progressive rock bands. Only eight tracks, but only one is under six minutes in length! Includes versions of "Lighthouse Keepers", "Last Frame" and "Killer". Excellent stuff.Contains expanded 16 page colour booklet and includes "Sci - Finance" and "Nadir's Big Chance" which were only previously on the Japanese edition of the CD. Obviously the work of prog musicians (now a seven piece thanks to the addition of a cellist and the return of the fiery David Jackson) this remains nevertheless the rawest recording they ever made (well, it was live) and in places, particularly on the new songs showcased here, sounds like what the band were later proven to be- a blueprint for punk rock. So now you know who to blame. . .

Van Der Graaf Generator - Time Vaults. CD. (Spalax - 14847)

Archive recordings from between 1971 and 1975. Derived from rehearsal tapes / rough mixes and put together by Peter Hammil, their quality is by his own admission "rough", but the VdGG magic is still unmissable... One for Hammil collectors and VdGG aficionados!

The inclusion of a whole bunch of previously unreleased radio sessions and live material make this an essential purchase for comletists and collectors. Van Der Graaf Generator - The Least We Can Do Is Wave To Each Other. CD. (Charisma - CASCDR 1007)

Remaster of the album first released in 1970, and one of the landmark albums of UK progressive rock. This was in essence the first 'true' VDGG album, as its predecessor had been originally recorded as a Hammill solo (after the first of the band's many breakups) and is sonically quite different. Here they found their 'sound'- layered tapestries of organs, pianos, guitars and saxes all accompanied by the other-worldly, nature-questioning lyrics of Peter Hammill. The stand out tracks are "Refugees" (believe it or not, a song about Susan Penhaligon!!) and "After The Flood", but everything here is essential listening for progsters. Contains 2 previously unreleased bonus tracks and expanded booklet.

Van Der Graaf Generator - Still Life. CD. (Charisma - CASCDR1116)

1976 album from Peter Hammill and his band of (not-so) merry progsters. Oft cited by fans as the band's best album, this is the one with 'Pilgrims' 'La Rossa' and the show-stopping title track, which sums up the band's attitude in one sentence- "In the death of mere humans all life shall start!!" Although there's still nothing remotely commercial here, this was probably the band's most melodic album since "The Least We Can Do Is Wave To Each Other". Remastered and now including the bonus track "Gog" (live).

Van Der Graaf Generator - Quiet Zone/Pleasure Dome. CD. (Charisma - CASCDR1131)

'Schizophrenic" 1977 album from prog's dark behemoths. Van Der Graaf was largely Peter Hammill by this stage, but that didn't mean any dilution of the dramatic and inventive porgressive music that characterised the band's music.Contains expanded 16 page colour booklet and 3 bonus tracks that include a demo version of "The Wave",the single B side "Ship of Fools" and "Door". Far more 'punchy' than before, and with violin replacing David Jackson's trademark sax, this was the sound of a band who could have, with their revised name, quite happily moved into the next era- but instead chose to bow out, making this their last studio album for nearly 30 years.

Van Der Graaf Generator - Present. Dble CD. (Virgin Records - CDVD 2999)

They are back with a brand new 2005 release. CD 1 consists of 6 songs recorded in Peter's studio in North Devon, whilst CD2 consists of 10 instrumental improvisation tracks. Originally formed in 1967, VDGG earned an intense cult following as one of the era's top art-rock groups. Often tagged as being 'prog-rock' (as no-one could quite place them within any specific genre) their inimitable style has been acknowledged as an influence by the likes of too many to mention. Their sound can be described as a fusion between extreme freeform jazz using very tight but complex time signatures along with experimental organ bass pedals, sax, dark lyrics & a unique style of singing by Hammill

Van Der Graaf Generator - Godbluff. CD. (Charisma - CASCDR1109)

The 1975 comeback album (after a short split which fooled no-one) and after 3 years away it was a majestic return to form. Just four tracks, but plenty of thoughtful and inspired progressive experimentation here that still sounds impressive a quarter of a century on. Remastered with two bonus live tracks which have swelled the album's running time to just under an hour- 'A Louse Is Not A Home' and 'Forsaken Gardens'. The track 'Scorched Earth' is one of the band's darkest forays, a disquieting mixture of screeching sax, ominous organ runs and treated vocals. Evil had never sounded quite so good.

Van Der Graaf Generator - An Introduction. CD. (Virgin Records - CDV2932)

Credit Virgin with a compilation that serves the collector as well as the non-christened pregnant with inchoate expectations of Van Der Graaf Generator. Anyone who has slogged through the work of Nektar or Barclay James Harvest looking for a supplement to their diet of King Crimson and Hawkwind has been feeding at the wrong trough. Better to sample the works of VDGG first, for which "An Introduction" is a tasteful snack.

Van Der Graaf Generator - Pawn Hearts. CD. (Charisma - CASCDR1051)

From 1971, the fourth album by the UK progmasters. Washes of Mellotrons and Hammond organs mix with saxophones and guitars - some of the latter played by Robert Fripp in an inspired album that includes the lengthy concept piece "A Plague of Lighthouse Keepers" and the beautiful "Man Erg". Contains 5 previously unreleased bonus tracks and expanded booklet. Oh, and the name, by the way, is a play on 'horn parts', of which of course there are many on the album.

Remaster of the album also from 1970, this the third album continues in the rich vein of progressive rock mined by its predecessors. Van Der Graaf Generator - Maida Vale - Radio 1 Sess.. CD. (Starnge Fruit - SFRSCD064)

Fantastic BBC sessions from Maida vale. Eight tracks spanning from '71 -'76 recorded for Sounds Of The Seventies and the John Peel shows. Little of their superb live shows have been officially released (apart from grainy bootlegs) making this eight track collection even more relevant and collectable. They were always a different beast live, effectively the other side of the same coin and they deserve this peak era aollection. Includes "Darkness", "Sleepwalkers", "When She Comes" and "Scorched Earth."
