Lucifer Was - The Divine Tree. CD. The Lucifer Was trademarks, screaming guitars, the flutes, occasional mellotron and Jon Ruders enchanting vocals, are all present on their new release. This time the band also feature a lot of the B3 Hammond organ and one of Norway’s absolute top guitar players and musicians Freddy Lindquist (Ex-Vanguards). He plays his plays his Fender Stratocaster and bottleneck more like a bowed instrument, those long soaring tones sound like they are crusted out from the gypsy violin. The music is at the same time both weird and normal and makes for an accessible but still challenging listening pleasure. It’s progressive, cathedral, heavy, bluesy and melodic. This album is oddly weird, oddly normal! | Primitive Graven Image - Traversing The Awesome Night. CD. Primitive Graven Image hail from London UK 2007, with a mighty influence from Scandanavia 1987, and the fact that they have already signed to US label Open Grave despite the band's early age (they have been together for only a year in fact ) is testament to the fact that they are a rising force to be reckoned with in the black/extreme metal genres. Brothers Dokkalfur and Ljosalfur have created an album of uncompromising icy cold black metal with further influences ranging from progressive/battle metal to heads down no holds barred death metal. Raw in production, yet intense and at times progressive and beautiful, Traversing the Awesome Night is very obviously influenced by the very first black metal bands, early Bathory, Celtic Frost and Dark Throne spring to mind, yet later tracks on the album such as Victorious hint at a Voivod influence even with more interesting rhythms interspersed with blast beats. An interesting mix of ideas drawring on the past and the present has created a solid debut album that comes recommended. |
Winters - Black Clouds In Twin Galaxies. CD. Although undeniably heavy in their approach, Winters heavy riffs are matched with pop sensibilities that sets them up apart other stoner and underground bands. This gives the the potential to break out from the usual crowd and force people to take notice of what they are making. Eleven tracks including: "Life Was So Simple", "Did Me In", "Endless Fight" and "Fried." | Trouble - Simple Mind Condition. CD. 2004 release from Chicago's Trouble. Continuing the seemless progression from their classic 1980's work all the way up until the present day, their work has been an inspiration for an entire generation of stoner bands. Eleven tracks in total, including: "Trouble Maker", "Arthur Brown's Whiskey Bar", "Mindbender" and "If I Only Had A Reason." |
Katatonia - The Great Cold Distance. CD & DVD audio. Seventh album of icy cold progressive-Gothic-doom-death from the Scandinavian masters whichc is now available in a special package including the original album, which also includes 2 bonus tracks ("Displaced" & "Dissolving Bonds"), and a second DVDA disc containing a 5.1 channel mix of the album, for the optimal audio experience. | Katatonia - Discouraged Ones. CD. The Stockholm based group's third album from 1998, now re-mastered and re-issued. An emotionally charged epic release, the atmospheric absorbing sound the band creates is so damn miserable the singer barely finds the strength to produce any notes. Not exactly mos pit material, this one of those metal records that gets into your head and your heart. Expanded with two bonus tracks: "Quiet World" (an unused track from the album sessions) and "Scarlet Heavens" (dating back to 1994.) |
Witchfynde - Best Of. CD. Seventeen track compilation that includes tracks from the first three albums of the occult loving Heavy Metallers. A snapshot from the golden age of metal, the group had suffered a long journey through punk before finding success whilst supporting Def Leppard on tour in 1980. It was worth the wait though, this group are still mentioned today by the new generation of Doomsters as major influences. Remastered sound quality, extensive liner notes and new artwork, this best of was compiled with the cooperation of the band. | Burning Saviours - Burning Saviours. 7". A young band hailing from Orebro, Sweden who specialise in Doom Metal and Heavy Rock. The two tracks on this 7" offer the listener a great insight into a band uninterested in curent trends in rock, but are completely created underground Doom Rock. They have nothing to prove other than making some good solid music. Side A: "The Giant", Side B "The Clown" |
Lucifer Was - In Anadi's Bower. CD. On this 2000 album by Norwegian ‘heavy progressive’ band Lucifer Was you can hear elements from Jethro Tull (flute) and The Moody Blues (Mellotron)and Sabbath (heavy, riffs) check out tracks like "Kill The Rats", "In Anadi's Bower" and "Behind Black Rider" and you will understand. Lot's of flute and marvelous guitar playing from the man and the myth; Thore Engen. This album is a superb masterpiece, at least in its genre category.Contains 10 page lyric booklet. | Lucifer Was - Blues From Hellah. CD. Third album from Norweigan progressive legends LUCIFER WAS offers a more well though album that part contains a little more blues influenced style, but also more symphonic as they add much orchestration than before. The flutes and dreamy vocals as as present as always, with a clear Jethro Tull influence. Mr Thore Engen delivers some excellent bleeding guitar solos, especially outstanding on the Captain Beyond cover "Armworth". This is a a release filled with magic and love for the 70’s scene, a time when music had no limits or boundaries. Very recommended !! |
