Who better to follow up the greatest of all library LPs than Alan Moorhouse, a twisted genius whose musical output clearly proves that he couldn’t have given a monkey’s what anyone thought of him. From unlistenable marching band versions of Chirpy Chirpy Cheep Cheep, to an entire album of demented Tijuana styled hymns to the hard hitting funk of his work for KPM, Moorhouse would surely have shocked and amazed us with more musical mayhem had his life not been tragically cut short at the end of the 1970s. The Big Beat 2 has some mighty shoes to fill but effortlessly delivers the goods.

The King of all library albums, composed by Keith Mansfield and Alan Hawkshaw, and until now only available to vinyl junkies with the deepest of pockets. An album made up of incredible Hammond organ playing, a really fat horn section, fuzz guitar solos and drum breaks. A living legend, available in a very limited pressing of 2000 copies worldwide.
Released in 1996, this groundbreaking album was one of the first to compile 60's and 70's library music. Perhaps an odd idea, but it is one that has stuck with a large number of collectors worldwide and it has sold 20,000 copies so far. Featuring the cream of the KPM Music Library writers including Keith Mansfield, Alan Hawkshaw, Alan Parker and Johnny Pearson, Exclusive Blend Volume 1 sees Blow Up’s founder and DJ Paul Tunkin taking us on a journey deep into the library's vaults. Most of these tracks had never been commercially available before this release.
Volume 2 sees Blow Up’s founder and DJ Paul Tunkin entering the vaults of De Wolfe, Amphonic and again KPM. As with a bulk of Exclusive Blend 1, many of these tracks were receiving their first commercial airing on this album’s release. The album also introduced James Clarke’s Wild Elephants to the world, which was subsequently picked up by Gap and used on the 1999 ‘Khaki A Go-Go’ worldwide campaign.
Laurie Johnson - You're Needed. CD. (Label: El, Cat.No: ACMEM112CD)
One of the finest British composers of cult TV series’ themes, Laurie Johnson was also in his early years one of the most highly regarded arrangers for swing big bands. This twenty four track collection brings together his classic themes for The Avengers, Whicker's World, Dr Strangelove as well as a number of left field, swinging tracks with a real Saville Row, man about town feel to them. These orchestral themes and cool jazz motifs are amongst his very best works.

Ray Russell - The Composers Cut. CD. (Label: Angel Air, Cat.No: SJPCD214)
Ray Russell is the guitarist who you may not know by name, but you may well have an album in your collection that he appears on, as he has played with everyone from John Barry and Phil Spector through Alex Harvey and Maggie Bell to Tina Turner and Van Morrison. He was also, of course, the Little Ladies' bearded guitarslinger in the hit TV series "Rock Follies". However, this CD concentrates on his many compositions and performances fro the wonderful and illustrious (at least it used to be before the chavs took over) world of British television. Themes from 'Plain Jane' 'Grafters' 'A Touch Of Frost' 'A Bit Of A Do' 'The Alleyn Mysteries' 'Stay Lucky' 'The Precious Blood' and many many more are here- if you didn't know it was Ray before, you will soon!! Great bloke, great music.
Managed by the legendary Evie Taylor, Ken worked on Sandie Shaw's recordings from 1964-1975 as musical director, producer, arranger (Sandie also being managed by Taylor). Ken also either produced or was Musical Director on recordings for Adam Faith, Chris Andrews, Tom Jones, New Vaudville Band, Lulu, Roy Orbison, Congregation, Mia Farrow. His sounds were also heard in numerous Radio and TV shows and productions throughout the 60's and 70's. Trademark phased brass sounds proliferate Ken's work, the brass element not surprising as he was a trumpeter by profession in the 1950's playing with jazz dance bands up and down the country. If you listen to the mid sixties hits like Tom Jones 'Help Yourself', Sandie Shaw 'Long Live Love', Chris Andrews 'Yesterday Man' and hear the backing sounds they have in common you get some idea of the influence Ken Woodman had at the time on UK pop. RPM is proud to present Ken's own recordings from 1966 and 1969 of recordings released on the Strike and Vibraton (non UK) labels. Only two of the tracks have been reissued since, and those were "Mexican Flyer" and "Twelve by Two" on RPMs ' Thriller Memorandum' ( Mood Mosaic Vol.2 ) album (the former, incidentally, was later sampled for a Sega game ). Plenty of stand out tracks, Ken's own compositions in particular - 'Mexican Flyer', 'Twelve by Two', 'Fruggy Dukesville', 'Peter Popgunn' and of course the famous 'Town Talk' itself. This track was taken to the BBC in 1966 for consideration as a Radio sig. tune, it was picked up for the then star DJ Jimmy Young and has remained a sig. tune for over 30 years- as well as being parodied by Vic Reeves.
Powerful exploitation library LP by this UK bunch of studio musicians, originally released by Peer in 1971 and licensed to Olimpo in Spain (bet they go for a bomb on E-Bay). Already very much in demand between library music fans and progressive rock colllectors and no wonder why. One of the strongest albums in its field, stacked with goodies: great psych organ mayhem on "Big Hammer", burning acid leads on "Burnilation", sitar action on "Annapurna" plus the twisted drum-break of "What’s Coming?" or the stoned , beat-heavy "Devil’s Stronghold" & "Heavy Lift". Tight bass and great beats all over. Limited to 500 and housed in a round sleeve.
Laurie Johnson - Cult TV Themes By Laurie Johnson. CD. (Label: Castle, Cat.No: CMQCD944)
It takes a special talent to compose a TV theme tune that outlives the series it was written to accompany, and Laurie Johnson is definitely that man. His themes for cult programmes such as The Avengers, The Professionals and Jason King have become as well-known as the shows themselves. This is the definitive collection of his television work, featuring all the different themes he composed for John Steed’s exploits in The Avengers.
