Released in 1970, this album was recorded with a wealth of local session players and features Manu Dibango a a guest sax player. In the 1950s, he returned to RCA as musical director in International, backing a variety of singing stars, such as Harry Belafonte and Eartha Kitt. This first collection of some of Rene's finest 1950s work uses one of his most famous covers.

Blind Willie Johnson - Nobody's Fault But Mine. CD.
(Label: Rev Ola, Cat.No: CRREV224)

Click for large image Willie Johnson's life in itself reads like an early blues, blinded at age seven by his own mother in a fight with his errantfather, living as an itinerant preacher and singer, having to live in the burnt out ruin of his ramshackle house after a fire,on a wet mattress, which eventually helped kill him, pneumonia, malarial fever and syphilis being a powerful combo. This upbringing clearly fueled his career and supplied him with one of the best eerie blues howls in the business and led to him writing some of the best religious based blues of the era. This twenty three track compilation brings together magical sounds Blind Willie recorded between 1927 and 1930, including: "Jesus Make Up My Dying Bed", "Can't Nobody Hide Form God", "I'm Gonna Run To The City For Refuge." and "Trouble Will Soon Be Over."

Four Freshmen - Graduation Day. CD.
(Label: El, Cat.No: ACMEM122CD)

Roots Of Bob Dylan - Various. CD.
(Label: Snapper, Cat.No: SBLUECD043)

Bessie Smith - Nobody Knows You When You're Down And Out. CD.
(Label: Rev Ola, Cat.No: CRREV 220)

Click for large image Twenty two tracks from The Empress Of The Blues, a huge hit in the 1920's. Real classic blues, her recordings often featured the best backing players around, from Louis Armstrong and Joe Smith toJames P Johnson and Charlie Green. Her elaborate live shows Harlem Frolics and Mississippi Days were smash hits thoughout the decade; The Blues were in and trendy, and Bessie was at the top of her game. Her career was effectively over by 1929 due to the swing in musical fashions and a planned comeback was cut short after her death in a 1935 car crash; she was one of the many acts on the endless chitlin' circuit, in Mississippi. Top drawer emotional blues.

Sugar Chile Robinson - Go Boy Go!. CD.
(Label: Rev Ola Bandstand, Cat.No: CDBAND 23)

Click for large image Never before on CD format, this is the complete recordings of the Detroit Dynamite, child prodigy Sugar Chile Robinson. Discovered by bandleader Frankie Carle in 1945, within a year he was asked to play a WhiteHouse party for President Harry Truman, guested with Lionel Hampton's Orchestra and appeared performing the title song in the 1946 MGM movie "No Leave, No Love". In 1949, he cut his first sides in the company of jazz veterans Leonard Bibbs and Zutty Singleton. His subsequent tours broke box-office records. His appearance at Chicago's Regal Theatre remains the biggest one-week attraction of the theatre's history, beating jazz royalty like Count Basie and Duke Ellington. By 1952, like many child stars, he just vanished from the scene. This is everything he ever made.

Smiley Lewis - Mama Don't Like It! 1950 - 56. CD.
(Label: Rev Ola Bandstand, Cat.No: CRBAND 24)

Click for large image On the same label at the same time as Fats Domino, Smiley Lewis is perhaps the best / most unappreciated rhythm and blues singer of the era. From day one the man had hit 45s on Imperial Records, occasionally backed by such highly regarded players as Huey Smith, saxists Lee Allen, Clarence Hall, and Herb Hardesty. His best known track must be the blistering "Shame, Shame, Shame" which featured on the soundtrack to the controversial Hollywood film Baby Doll. Thirty three tracks, all remastered and packaged with rare memorabilia and detailed notes. Some of the best 1950's New Orleans rockin' R&B around.

Also included as a bonus are the seven MGM singles that were originally released from 1963 - 1965.
