Battlefield Band / Various - Best Of Battlefield Band / Temple Records Legacy. Dble CD.
(Label: Temple Records, Cat.No: COMD2091)

Click for large image Two CD set bringing together the best of the legendary Scottish group over the period 1977-2001 and the twenty five best tracks from their label Temple Records. Not only have Battlefield Band been producing great music for 25 years, but they have also been a developing ground for numerous other groups and artists, and this CD showcases the changes over the years. The second CD celebrates twenty five years of great Scottish and Irish music from the label founded by Robin Morton. This is a fabulous showcase that perfectly illustrates Morton's dream of bringing the best of Scottish music to a wider audience at a time when even some of the specialist albums demurred at the prospect of albums devoted to a solo instrument.

MacMurrough - MacMurrough 74. CD.
(Label: Kissing Spell, Cat.No: KSCD943)

Click for large image In 1974 now operating under the altered name of MacMurrough, Paul Kavanagh, Mary ONeill and Josephine ONeill released their second album entitled Mac Murrough. Released on Polydor Ireland in 1974 and produced by Donal Lunny of Planxty. Bothy Band and Moving Hearts fame. Originally released by Polydor Ireland in a limited edition of 500 copies, Mac Murrough is an acid folk classic. Featuring lyrical ballads from the English and Irish tradition including a 15th century Latin hymn Deus Meus and the song tradition of their native Wexford provided The Pulshone Fishermen. Celestial male/female harmonies are overlaid with subtle arrangements for guitar, dulcimer, lute, spinet, glockenspiel, tin whistle and bodhran MacMurrough weaves a web of pastoral elgaeic acid folk magic that justified MacMurroughs status as a holy grail.

Celtic Folkweave - Celtic Folkweave. CD.
(Label: Kissing Spell, Cat.No: KSCD956)

Click for large image Recorded in Dublin in 1973, and released the next year in their native Ireland, Celtic Folkweave (Michael Hanly and Micheal O Domhnaill) created an acid folk classic. The material ranges from deeply personal interpretations of traditional texts, a mix of Gaelic and English songs from Ireland and Scotland, contemporary tracks (including a Pentangle cover) solo performances and whole band tracks. A wonderfully vital sounding album that feels as fresh as a daisy.

Spud - Happy Handful. CD.
(Label: Kissing Spell, Cat.No: KSCD954)

Click for large image A largely forgotten name in the Irish Rock and Folk annals, folk-rock outfit Spud formed in Dublin in 1973. A folk group with elements of Americana, Country Rock, British Folk Rock and their own celtic background, they had a strong live following in Europe and the UK. Mixed and produced by Simon Nicol, this is their second Long Player, released after their Cambridge Folk Festival appearance and a tour with Richard and Linda Thompson in late 1975. Featured her ea re electric jigs, exciting rock based arrangements of traditional songs and their own compositions. Ten tracks.

MacMurrough - Carrig River 1973. CD.
(Label: Kissing Spell, Cat.No: KSCD944)

Click for large image Mary and Josephine O’Neill and Paul Kavanagh specialised in finest poems and ballads from the Irish folk tradition spanning four centuries. Their real appeal was their close harmonies and subtle accompanyments. Long held as an acid folk holy grail, Carrig River was released in 1973, it was their debut release. Includes: "Follow Me Up To Carlow", "Siobhan Ni Dhuibhir" and "Reynard The Fox."

MacMurrough - Merry And Fine. CD.
(Label: Kissing Spell, Cat.No: KSCD945)

Click for large image Mary Kavanagh and Paul Kavanagh (Josephine O’Neill had left by this point) released this album on a limited run of 500 copies at the start of 1978. Songs from the Irish, English, Scottish and Breton folk repertoires appear here. Their third release carefully blends together the enthusiasm of their debut and the sophistication of the self titled follow up. One of the lesser known groups of the Irish Acid folk, their relases were always consistently good and blended the ancient with the contemporary.

Jackie Leven - Oh What A Blow That Phantom Dealt Me. CD.
(Label: Cooking Vinyl, Cat.No: COOKCD395)

Click for large image New studio album by the Scottish Celt Rocker. Statring out in cult punk rock band Doll By Doll, Jackie has has been a successful solo artist since the '80's. From ancient psychedelic blues to post-modern Tex Mex via a murder tale narrated by America's toughest singer Johnny Dowd, this is one of 2007's most promising releases. Tracklisting: "Vox Humana", "One Man One Guitar", "Another Man's Rain", "Kings Of Infinite Space", "Childish Blue", "I've Been Everywhere", "Long Hard Field", "Silver In Her Crucifix", " Here Come The Urban Ravens", "Skaters" and "Mellow My Madness."

Afro Celt Sound System - Volume 1: Sound Magic. CD.
(Label: Real World, Cat.No: CDRW61)

Click for large image The masters of combining African traditional rhythms with Celtic Folk (to be fair there aren't exactly millions of groups doing this kind of thing). The fascinating thing about their debut album from 1996 is how this frankly bizarre combination works so well. Being able to take two contrasting traditions, combining them and, most importantly, updating the sound with digital techniques deserves respect. A drum heavy set that keeps the pace up on the dancier tracks and offsets the calmer folky numbers. Includes: "Nil Cead Againn Dul Abhaile/We Cannot Go Home", "Inion (Daughter)" and "Eistigh Liomas Sealad (Listen To Me)/Saor (Reprise.)"

Afro Celt - Seed. CD.
(Label: Real World, Cat.No: CDRW111)

Click for large image This album shows the Afro Celt's developing into a proper band, now almost entirely playing acoustic instruments (apart from the electronic opening.) This and the fact that only band members are sharing the vocals rather than bringing in guest singers perhaps explains the shortening of their name, this is Afro Celt stage two. As ever, there is still plenty of room for the twenty-odd guest musicians who pop up throughout the album. A smoother sound than before, having removed the more eclectic elements to their sound, eased off on the heavy drums and made things a bit more straightforward. Includes: "Ayub's Song/As You Were", "Cyberia", "All Remains" and "Other Side."

Afro Celt Sound System - Volume 2: Release. CD.
(Label: Real World, Cat.No: CDRW76)

Click for large image A great follow up to Volume 1, again combining African and Celtic traditions; it's important to note that they really aren't staying in the past but are pushing the music forward wit hdigital technology. Released in 1999, it is a wonderful mix of muscular drumming and gentle, world instrumentaltions. At times haunting, at times thrillingly upbeat this subtle, complex work is highly recommended .Features Sinead O'Conor on guest vocals. Includes: "Riding The Waves", "Urban Aire" and "Release It."

Afro Celt Sound System - Volume 3: Further In Time. CD.
(Label: Real World, Cat.No: CDRW96)

Click for large image Third offering from the African/Irish music group. They take the digital side further here even wandering into drum and bass territory at one point. A consistant group who are technically brilliant and innovative. Features guest vocals from Peter Gabriel and Robert Plant. Twelve tracks Including: "Persistence of Memory", "When You're Falling", "North 2" and "The Silken Whip."

Afro Celt Sound System - Anatomic. CD.
(Label: Real World, Cat.No: CDRW133)

Click for large image An incredible blend of South African traditional music, sequencers and Irish Folk, this outfit manages to easily blend these two genres and encourage the best guest artists from either style to contribute. A fabulous jam orientated album, deep in its textural and melodical delights. Quite possibly their strongest album. Includes: "Mojave", "Dhol Dogs" and "Beautiful Rain."
