(Label: Cherry Red DVDs, Cat.No: CRDVD 164)

Click for large image First time ever on DVD for this compilation of rare promo and live material - featuring some tracks previously unseen on any format. From it's first major explosion in the late 1970's / early 1980's, the Gothic scene has always been most fervently supported by its many followers. It is still incredibly popular around the world, as the manycompilation albums dedicated to the genre testify. The scene has thrown up many great songs, bands and characters - many of which are featured on "In Goth Daze Volume 2".The artists included here include some of Goth's star names and stalwarts, such as Fields Of The Nephilim, Specimen, Alien Sex Fiend, Nico and Skeletal Family.

Soft Cell - Demo None Stop. CD.
(Label: Some Bizarre, Cat.No: SBZ059CD)

Click for large image Non-Stop Erotic Cabaret was the first album released by the groundbreaking synthpop/New Wave duo Soft Cell, released in 1981. This is a ten track collection of demos from the album sessions. Almond and Ball weave their sleazy pop with genuine ease here, creating one of the best selling albums of the year. All tracks unreleased until now, they provide an illuminating behind the scenes peak at the working process of two of the most unlikely stars of the early '80's pop scene. Includes the demo versions of: "Say Hello Wave Goodbye", "As Advertised", "Facility Girl" and "Persuasion."

Toyah - Toyah! Toyah! Toyah! (Special Edition). CD.
(Label: Cherry Red, Cat.No: CDMRED 299)

Click for large image Originally released in 1980, this was Toyah's first live album. Recorded in Wolverhampton for a TV documenary, the full concert was recorded but only ten tracks were issued on the original release. This expanded version includes the remaining songs from the show plus extracts from a London gig and four from a Glasgow venue during the 1982 The Changeling Tour (making eighteen tracks in total.) Never released on CD before, it now includes expanded artwork.

Kate Bush - The Sensual World. CD.
(Label: EMI, Cat.No: CDP7930782)

Click for large image Kate's final album of the 80s may be the least classic of her repertoire to date, but one must remember, a lesser album from Ms Bush is still a silk purse compared to the sows' ears of other artists. Once again spawning three hit singles ('This Woman's Work' 'Love And Anger' and the title track) but forsaking the sweeping grandiosity of 'Hounds Of Love' for a slightly murkier mix of electronics ('Deeper Understanding') , Celtic instrumentation ('The Fog') East European choirs ('Rocket's Tail') and maybe a shade too many backing vocals that obscured Kate's own sensuous voice (the whole album, but in particular 'Between A Man And A Woman') When she gets it right, however, as on 'Reaching Out' 'Heads We're Dancing' and the aforemenntioned singles, the results are amazing: more significantly, the presence of jazz bassist Eberhard Weber, who had first collaborated with her on 'Hounds. . .' is more pronounced here, and results in some ravishing instrumental textures.

Kate Bush - Hounds Of Love. CD.
(Label: EMI, Cat.No: 5252392)

Click for large image After the relative commercial failure of 'The Dreaming', which effectively alienated half of her fanbase, the divine Ms Bush set about recording the album which she believed would fully realise her most complex and adventurous ideas and recapture the pop sensibility she had forsaken. It didn't quite do either, but 'Hounds Of Love' is still probably her most all encompassing work. One side, although comprised of separate songs (standouts including 'Waking The Witch' 'Jig Of Life' and 'Hello Earth'), is actually a concept piece entitled 'The Ninth Wave' (showing her prog roots): the other side, which spawned three hit singles in 'Running Up That Hill' (her biggest hit bar 'Wuthering Heights' and a huge smash on the Goth dancefloors) 'Cloudbusting' (later sampled by Utah Saints) and 'Hounds Of Love' itself, plus fan faves 'And Dream Of Sheep' and 'The Big Sky' is more easily digestable but, with its thunderous percussion and unorthodox vocals (her voice having lowered considerably since the previous album), not necessarily any more commercial. 21 years later, the sound may have dated, but the songs still hold up and are a testament to the development and growth of a major force in music.

Blue Aeroplanes - Best Of. CD.
(Label: EMI Catalouge, Cat.No: CDCHRM101)

This collection features songs from their 4 full length album as well as their EP's. Tracks Include. "Jack Leaves And Back Spring", "Growing Up Growing Down" and "Sixth Continent".

Toyah - Love Is The Law… Plus. CD.
(Label: Edsel / Demon Westside, Cat.No: DIAB 8074)

Click for large image 1985 release from Toyah, alternating between new wave and pure pop songs. Original nine track album now has five bonus tracks. Includes: "Broken Diamonds", "Baptised In Fire", "Laughing With The Fools" and "Dreamscape."

Classix Nouveaux - Secret. CD.
(Label: Cherry Red, Cat.No: CDMRED303)

Click for large image Although Classix Nouveaux's more guitar-heavy sound separated them from the mostly synthetic rhythms of Japan andUltravox, the group's appetite for stylish fashion and danceable keyboards had them quickly associated with the newromantic movement. Formed in 1979 with Sal Solo (vocals), Mik Sweeney (bass), BP Hurding (drums), and Jak Airport(guitar), Classix Nouveaux originated in the punk underground, namely from the ashes of the controversial X-Ray Spex. After banshee wailer Poly Styrene departed from X-Ray Spex, the remaining members held auditions for a replacementsinger. The charismatic Solo won the approval of Styrene's former bandmates and they went on to record the albumNIGHT PEOPLE (1981), followed by LA VERITE (1982).SECRET (1983) turned out to be a very appropriate title for most of the world, as this final album was ClassixNouveaux's best kept secret. With top American producer, Alex Sadkin, at the helm Classix veered between the artisticexperimental of Peter Gabriel and the synthy pop of the Thompson Twins.

Sal Solo - Heart And Soul. CD.
(Label: Cherry Red, Cat.No: CDMRED311)

Click for large image It was in the 1980s that Sal Solo came to prominence, being the lead singer, songwriter and producer ofClassix Nouveaux. The band had chart success at home and abroad and were renowned for their hardwork, performing all over the UK and extensively around the world. In 1983 Sal had become disillusioned with the record industry and had taken himself off to SanDamiano, in Northern Italy. It was there that he had a life-changing experience, he became happier withhimself, relaxed.Sal wrote and released a single called San Damiano which became a huge hit, not only in the UK butaround the world, even making it to number one in Poland. TV, radio and numerous press interviewsfollowed. This was a very different Sal Solo to the one the public had seen only a couple of yearspreviously.Music and You was the follow-up single in 1985. Sal asked The London Community Gospel Choir toguest on the record and together they appeared on various peak time television programmes.Sal appeared on quite a few British Sunday evening television programmes including The Rock GospelShow. It was Sal's manager, Falcon Stuart, who later said: "Sal is one of those rare artistes who isprepared to stand up and be counted both musically and morally."Includes 5 bonus tracks.

Kate Bush - Under Review. DVD.
(Label: Sexy Intellectual, Cat.No: SIDVD502)

Click for large image A 90 minute film reviewing the career of one of music's primary artists in any genre- the enigmatic, fascinating and beautiful Kate Bush. Includes rare performances never before on DVD, obscure footage, are interviews, photographs and reviews, insight and criticism from many of the prime journalists of the day (or alternatively a bunch of cynical self publicists being paid to sit around talking about someone who actually has talent) Includes clips from all the hits such as 'Running Up That Hill' 'Cloudbusting' 'This Woman's Work' and many many more, and a full interactive quiz. This has been the final Freak Emporium review from your loyal correspondent Dr. Ew, over and out.

Comsat Angels - Fiction. CD.
(Label: Renascent, Cat.No: RENCD11)

Click for large image The final of the Comsats' Polydor trilogy, 'Fiction' moves away from the immense sonic soundscape of its predecessor, in favour of a lightter (more commercial perhaps/0 feel, and the band's collective songwriting suss is very much in eveidence with tracks like 'After The Rain' 'Pictures' and 'What Else' being the equal of their first two albums' best.

Comsat Angels - Sleep No More. CD.
(Label: Renascent, Cat.No: RENCD10)

Click for large image Often regarded as the finest of the band's three Polydor albums, 'Sleep No More' featured a more powerful drum sound than had been featured on their debut, and the classic track 'Dark Parade' (sounds like the name of the kind of club they would have played in back then!!) which deals with the US embassy hostage crisis of 1980 (the writer remembers it well). Bonus tracks include the brilliant 'Eye Of The Lens'.

Comsat Angels - The BBC Sessions 1979-84. CD.
(Label: Renascent, Cat.No: RENCD12)

Click for large image Otherwise known as 'Time Considered As A Helix Of Precious Stones': The BBC Sessions 1979-84, this collection consists of tracks that span their Polydor era and beyond, some predating their debut album, and include versions of 'Real Story' 'Independence Day' 'Misater Memory' 'Island Heart' and so forth alongside their very rare Stones cover 'The Citadel'. Some even believe these to be better than their studio counterparts!!

Comsat Angels - Waiting For A Miracle. CD.
(Label: Renascent, Cat.No: RENCD9)

Click for large image This seminal Sheffield-based band from the late 1970s/early 80s recorded several classic albums, and this debut is just one of them. Often grouped in with the Teardrops, Bunnymen, Chameleons and Joy Division (but far more lean, stripped down and ethereal sounding than any of them), their sound was very much a product of its time but still stands up today. This album contains their classic almost-hit 'Independence Day', as well as fan faves 'Total War' and 'Real Story', both of which any fan of 80s independent music holds dear to their hearts. Bonus tracks featured.
