Circulus / Marian Segal - The Gathering. CD.

Ghost - Overture. CD + DVD.
(Label: Drag City, Cat.No: DC330CD)

Click for large image At sunset on the night of October 9th, 2006, a crowd gathered at Nippon Yusen Soko, a converted warehouse space located on Yokahama Bay. Their purpose: to see and hear new music played by Ghost. Once they had completely arrived, the doors were shut and locked and the announcement made: no one would enter or exit the space until the performance was complete. Starting in complete darkness, the performance was spun, like yarn from a cocoon. The set for this evening was not just new to the audience. For this event, Ghost played entirely improvised material. Improvisation is the wellspring of creation for Ghost, both live and in the studio, though they’ve never made an entire album of improvisations until now. In order to not miss a single inspiration, Ghost brought their orchestra’s-worth of instrumentation, playing bass, drums, piano, electric and acoustic guitars, saxophones, flute, tin-whistle, bells, frame drums, lute, tabla-baya, waterphone and even tapes! The CD performance is an edited version of the evening’s events, but the DVD is a completely live, four-camera view into the collective journey of Ghost and their audience. In addition to the sounds and sights of the band in action, the viewer will also experience the atmospheres created by Overheads, whose far-ranging light works (and subtle placement of a lace curtain) enhanced the mood within Nippon Yusen Soko that night.

St. Mikael - Mind Of Fire. CD.
(Label: Sublime Frequencies, Cat.No: SUBCD22)

Click for large image Incredibly enough, but very naturally, after 11-years silence heres a 2007 album by this mysterious and legendary Swedish psychedelic multi-instrumentalist. S.T. Mikael spearheaded the DIY psychedelic rock/folk movement of the late 1980s-mid-90s, with a collection of albums that now fetches up and over $1000 on Ebay. You do get the feeing that Mikael actually lives the lifestyle rather than just emulating it. His soaring vocals, surreal lyrics, fragile, folky melodies, heavy fuzz riffs, mind bending soul funk and penchant for the spiritual and mystical make this altogether a fascinating voyage that is so mind twisting, soul swirling, upper psychedelic that your third eye takes you on a joyride thru an altered state! The CD also contains 9 previously unreleased vintage recordings and an unique spoken introductions by Mikael.

Story (Forest) - Arcane Rising. CD.
(Label: Sunbeam Music, Cat.No: SBRCD5038)

Click for large image Arcane Rising is the 2007 album by The Story, the acclaimed duo comprising Martin Welham (leader of acid folk outfit Forest) and his multi-instrumentalist son Tom. Written and recorded in the depths of the English countryside, like its predecessor Tail Spin (2005), it’s a partly improvised and consistently melodic song cycle that’s sure to appeal to fans of Devendra Banhart, Joanna Newsom and Espers as well as older names like Donovan, the Incredible String Band and COB.

Nick Castro & The Young Elders - A Day Without Disaster. 10".
(Label: A Silent Place, Cat.No: ASP25)

Click for large image 2007 chapter in the musical adventures of Nick Castro. This EP is a glimpse into the ever-evolving minds of NC & The Young Elders, which are dwelling somewhere between the romantic male/female duets of Richard & Linda Thompson and the exotic worldly arrangements of the Incredible String Band. With their focused sensitive touch, unusual acoustic textures, gentle wordplay and ensemble interaction The Young Elders are traversing the folk world and leaving large shoes to fill. Their latest efforts meet paths with psychedelic sirens, Turkish rain calls, celtic ghost stories and realizations of the natural world. They've created a sound where the harmonium and saz coexist with blaring electric guitars and close vocal harmonies. The Young Elders are currently comprised of members Wendy Watson, Ryan Kirkpatrick, Christof Certik (member of Winter Flowers) and guest Jeb Lipson. Though often lumped in with the "freak-folk" genre Nick Castro has been transcending such labels since most of these new folkies were still playing indie

In Gowan Ring - Time Is A Spiral #1. 10".

Lavender Diamond - Imagine Our Love. CD.
(Label: Rough Trade, Cat.No: RTRADCD395)

Click for large image 2007album comprised of pristine pocket symphonies that combine the best of the early ‘70s Brit-folk boom with gorgeous arrangements and an overwhelming sense of sheer heartbroken wonder. Lavender Diamond is Becky Stark and her band. A one-time flatmate of Jenny Lewis and long time friend of Devendra Banhart (with whom she’s shared a couple of split vinyl singles in the US), Becky grew up in rural Maryland and first experienced music at church. But for the Starks, music was a religion of it’s own too. 'My mum had a lot of old ‘45s and on Sunday mornings instead of going to church we would all sit round and she’d make us learn all the lyrics to the songs'.Inspired as a teenager by the nearby Washington DC punk community. This was a significant catalyst in the development of what was to become Lavender Diamond.

Winter Flowers are five young mystics who live in a communal environment in California.Very limited private pressing.

Pentangle - One More Road & Live 1994. Dble CD.
(Label: Hux Records, Cat.No: HUX089)

Click for large image Recently honoured for Lifetime Achievement at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards, the legendary status of the original Pentangle is beyond question. Less known, though, are the great albums made by the reconstituted Pentangle between 1984-94. Built around original members Jacqui McShee and Bert Jansch, with guitarist Peter Kirtley, drummer Gerry Conway, and Nigel Portman Smith on bass, the group created a magical sound all of their own. This double CD brings together the highlights from this Pentangle line-up; Their final studio album, the epic ‘One More Road’, with their swansong, ‘Live 1994’. These discs capture the band performing old favourites and overlooked gems with a fantastic new energy. As Bert Jansch recently said of the ‘One More Road’ album; “It more than holds its own against the classic albums made by the first line up”. Both CDs have been digitally re-mastered and are now reissued together on CD for the first time, with the full agreement of the band. The accompanying 20 page booklet features extensive liner notes, including interviews with the band, plus an additional note by Jacqui McShee, lyrics to many of the featured tracks and rare band photos.

John Kirkpatrick - Make No Bones. Dble CD.
(Label: Fledgling, Cat.No: FLED 3065)

Click for large image Eighteen track live extravaganza from the gifted squeezebox player. At the forefront of the British Folk scene for decades and still at the top of his game, he entertains an enthralled audience without any accompanyment, this is strictly a solo performance. An appropriately titled album from a player who lets the mood of the evening shape each performance, someone who never holds back, regardless of the consequences. Includes: "On Yonder Old Oak", "Cold Blows The Wind", "The Ironbridge Hornpipe" and "St George's Day."

Oh Sees - Cool Death Of The Island Raiders. CD.
(Label: Narmack, Cat.No: NCK7036CD)

Click for large image Great 2006 release from the stoned Californinas, opening through the charmingly entitled 'The Guilded C*nt', The Oh Sees bring a real sense of calm to their music with the Kevin Shields vs. desert rock of 'The Dumb Drums' rubbing up nicely against the echo-chamber calm of 'Cool Deaths' and its chiming caverns. Hushed, mushed and luxuriously plush, 'The Cool Death Of Island Raiders' is like a sunny afternoon spent by the pool... with a shark in it.The Oh Sees are in fact melody wrapped trinkets that bring the kind of sounds you'd expect from prime-time Donovan then mix in dollops of shoegaze atmospherics and unfiltered California vitamin-C.Cool digi sleeve rounds off the package.
