Oliver - Good Morning Starshine- The Best Of. CD.
(Label: Taragon, Cat.No: TARCD1104)

Click for large image The greatest hits of this legend of easy listening and sunshine pop all assembled for the first time on CD. Oliver (for 'twas he) was of course known for his rendition of the title track (which came from the hit show 'Hair') but also recorded many folk rock and country rock ballads, songs by Rod McKuen ('Jean' being a particular favourite) and his own compositions such as 'Young Birds Fly' and 'Buddy' show the kind of music he wanted to create: complex, orchestrated, sometimes dramatic adult folk-pop similar to that of Bob Lind. There are also tracks here that result from his collaborations with Lesley Gore, which should have reached a larger audience had the world taken him more seriously. Still, he's a legend to us lot in the know. Grab this and find out why!!

Changing Of The Guard - Various. CD.
(Label: El, Cat.No: ACMEM127CD)

Click for large image The Changing of the Guard" is a unique music and dialogue sound collage of Swinging London in 1968; a time of exciting developments in all the artistic fields and a time when England set cultural standards that the world is still trying to emulate. Protagonists central to the scene are included here: Mick Jagger of the Rolling Stones discussing revolution; his manager Andrew Loog Oldham explaining business philosophy; the young Michael Caine debating morals in the context of the permissive society; Julie Christie on fame and Lee Marvin on Mini cars and mini skirts! The dialogue is edited against brilliant historic London pop of the period: big hits such as The Small Face's 'Itchychoo Park' and 'Here Come The Nice', Chris Farlowe's memorable number one 'Out of Time', 'If Paradise is Half as Nice' by The Amen Corner and mercurial psychedelia; The Marquis of Kensington, Fleur De Lys, Duncan Browne, Billy Nicholls and the first line up of Humble Pie featuring Steve Marriott and "the Face Of 1968" - Peter Frampton. Special mention too for an early song from Vashti!

Derived from Dyfed bands with added friends from further a field in the Swansea valleys, Cardiff and Flint in the north, this is a speakers to sing and express themselves in their mother tongue, part of a wider international youthquake, others were singing from the heart, paying the bills and just happened to live in Wales during this cultural crossroad. Here for your enjoyment are songs mostly about the sky, flying, seagulls, clouds and ghosts. But also songs that deal in political activism, The Mabinogi, or issues of Welsh identity. Girl group boy meets girl songs, parodies of boy meets girls songs, Welsh language covers of English and American hits of the day sung in a traditional Welsh style counteracted by traditional Welsh folk songs played in contemporary Anglo-American styles.

Psychedelic Schlemiels - Various. CD.
(Label: Wooden Hill, Cat.No: WHCD017)

Click for large image The British psychedelic scene has been so heavily anthologised over the years that many cult acts are now as familiar as the era’s major players. But while London-based bands like Tintern Abbey and Dantalian’s Chariot have belatedly received the attention that they deserve, the local group scenes that thrived up and down the country during the late Sixties remain a mystery to even the keenest collector. The first volume of a new series, this explores the secret garden with no less than twenty unreleased acetates and private tapes recorded by mostly unsigned provincial groups, the majority of whom weren’t even household names in their own households. With vital contributions from such local heroes as Peanut Rubble, So On & So Forth and Herbal Remedy, and featuring previously unreleased demos by major label acts The Carnaby, Sounds Around and West Coast Consortium, Psychedelic Schlemiels offers a fascinating window on a hitherto lost world of small-town suburban psychedelia. All twenty tracks unreleased at the time, and all previously unavailable on CD, with most making their first-ever appearance in any format 1. Elastic Band West Coast Consortium 2. Ballroom Beat Vol 2 - Try Me Out - Various. CD.
(Label: Psych Out Records, Cat.No: PCCD7016)

Click for large image 20 tempting portions of prime British Beat (1964-66) previously uncomped on CD. The music contained within is a bit more all-embracing than the hard-rocking R&B which emanated from smoky blues basements. What we have here is Volume 2, full of artistes who typify Saturday night in a provincial dance hall. You’ll find a Scottish band who only had records released in Germany, one of Brian Epstein’s less successful discoveries, two different early versions of King Crimson, a Coronation Street actor trying his hand at pop, and the band that would soon become Marmalade, plus, of course, a host of further delights.
