Che Guevara - Various. CD.
(Label: Warner Archives, Cat.No: 9903991602)

Click for large image A musical tribute to the most iconic revolutionary figure of our time, to commemorate the 40th anniversary of his death in 1967. The Argentine-born Marxist revolutionary, political figure, and leader of Cuban and internationalist guerrillas, had travelled throughout South America while a medicine student. His experiences and observations during these trips led him to the conclusion that the region's socio-economic inequalities could only be remedied by revolution, prompting him to intensify his study of Marxism and travel to Guatemala to learn about the reforms being implemented there. This compilation by Milan Records gathers artists and songs that marked the revolutionary battles at the time of Che Guevara: Astor Piazzolla, Carlos Santana, Atahualpa Yupanqui, Victor Jara, Raul Seixa, Violeta Parra, Isabel Parra, Gato Barbieri, Tim Maia and many more like Irakere, Illapu et Inti Illimani.. Taken by Roger Pic, the album cover shows an extremely rare colour picture of Che.

(Label: Rev Ola, Cat.No: CRREV 226)

Twelve track remastered album, one for all you Bossa Nova lovers.

Liverpool (Brazil) - Por Favor Sucesso + 8. CD.

As bonus tracks we have the E.P (movie soundtrack) "Marcelo Zona Sul" with 6 songs, plus another single from 1971 when they changed the name to " Liverpool Sound ". After that in 1975 the band changed the name to "Bicho da Seda" and did one LP in 1976 in a progressive & jazz rock style. The Lp of Liverpool is in the book "Record Collector dreams 2001" with 4 stars, but we invite you to find a copy for that price (or even better, simply try to find a copy!). Click for large image The Mutantes legend spread and their music, effortless mixing pop and experimentalism that’s both playful and weird, suddenly reaching new audiences. Some of the artists on this tribute are well-known, others still struggle in the underground, but what they have in common is an unabashed love for this trio and their crazy, lighthearted passion for fun and experimentation.Time hasn’t diminished the driving exuberance and the unmistakable vibe that is the real essence of Os Mutantes: Trackilist: Stop The Wheel "Top top" Jennifer Gentle "Panis et circenses" Father Murphy "Ave Lucifer" Sean Lennon and Yuka Honda "Trem fantasma" White Flag "Mysterious White Roses" (Os Mutantes unreleased song, taken from a 1968 movie) Tater Toz "Bat Macumba" Littlebrown "Senhor f." Caetano Voloso - Caetano Veloso (A Little More Blue). LP.
(Label: Lilith Records, Cat.No: LR135)

Click for large image vinyl version by the artist often referred to as "Brazil’s unofficial poet laureate" and the "Bob Dylan of Brazil", this heavy-weight of Brazilian music was also a young revolutionary who used his music to protest against Brazil’s oppressive military regime. This protest music, which became known as Tropicalia, first earned Veloso a stint in jail, but by the time this dour album was released in 1971, it had placed him in exile in the UK. Veloso’s extreme bitterness and melancholy can be heard on every groove of this album, but don’t let the album’s gloomy atmosphere stop you from buying it; it is dripping with some of the best moments of saudade in the history of Brazilian music.

Luiz Bonfa / Laurinda Almeida - Guitar Music Of Brazil. CD.
(Label: El, Cat.No: ACMEM115CD)

Click for large image A fine twenty five track compilation that shows the might of two great exponents of the Bossa Nova guitar style. Their widely successful collaborations with Stan Getz, Bd Shrank and Antonio Carlos Jobim brought the Brazillian sound to the world stage for the first time in the mid 50's. This album is comprised of rarites the two recorded alone such as Bonfa's impossible to find 10" debut releases and Almeida's brilliant interpretations of Heitor Villa-Lobos' work. Also features tracks Bonfa recorded with Ed Lincoln and Jorge Henrique.

Click for large image One of the most important Brazilian artists in the past 40 years, this legendary singer, songwriter and performer is generally regarded as one of the leading performers in Brazilian pop music and one of leading artists in the 'Tropicalia' movement, a cultural movement that celebrated Brazilian music along with Cinema, Theatre, Stage, Literature and Poetry. This 18 track compilation collects two of Gilberto Gil's 80's album releases; Disc 1 is the 8 track album "Soy Loco Por Ti America", Disc 2 is the 10 track album "Live In Tokyo".

Ennio Morricone - Morricone Giallo. CD.
(Label: Bella Casa, Cat.No: CASA5CD)

Click for large image The latest compilation of unsung tracks by the maestro composer who is responsible for hundreds of film scores. These twenty one tracks stem from his Giallo film scores, Italian language thrillers from the '60's nad '70's. Such was his fondness for the genre, Morricone ended up scoring more Giallo films than anyone else and defined the sound and atmosphere of the popular films. A fascinating little side step into the prolific composers works. Features selected tracks from the Italian films: "Senza Movente", "Il Gatto A nove Code", "Copkiller" and "Gli Occhi Freddi Della Paura."

O Bando - O Bando. CD.
(Label: , Cat.No: MCDS-0410)

Click for large image Reissue of the sole album (1969) from this Brazilian rock 'super-group' formed in São Paulo in the end of the 1960’s. O Bando’s music blended MPB, regional music and Tropicallia this engaging combination no doubt thanks to Rogério Duprat, who provides arrangements (along with Damiano Cozzela and Júlio Medaglia). It’s a bizarre record, which starts off with a blast of rampaging brass before searing fuzz guitar and disturbing astral keyboard sound effects kick in; the end result sounds like an insane hellfire version of soundtrack/library music of the period. The rest of the album is quirky in the best of all possible ways: some definitive Tropicalia moments, including a cover version of Toquinho e Jorge Ben’s “Que Maravilha,” funky break intros to many of the songs, and nice harmonies too, when required. Although they used single names in O Bando, the singer 'Marisa' was Marisa Fossa (she later recorded more material with Rogerio Duprat), Paulino was Paul de Castro who also played in Os Mutantes and other Brazilian rock legends, and 'Dudu' was famous Brazilian drummer Dudu Portes, who has backed Elis Regina, Milton Nascimento, and Gal Costa, among others. Booklet includes a nice essay on (and discography for) Rogério Duprat.

Caetano Veloso - Caetano Veloso (Tropicalia). CD.
(Label: Lilith Records, Cat.No: LR131)

Click for large image Originally released in 1968, Caetano Veloso’s debut album did for Brazilian music what the Beatles’ Sgt. Peppers did for rock & roll, giving birth to the soon-to-be Tropicalia movement, which fused Brazilian music with pop, psychedelia and social awareness (and Veloso’s leftist politics actually earned him a stint in jail in 1968 for ‘anti-government activity’). Veloso, nonetheless went on to become one of the most popular and influential Brazilian musicians of all time. Includes the genre-defining classics "Clarice" and "Soy Loco Por Tì, América", "Superbacana","Tropicalia" and "Alegria, Alegria".

Dick Farney - Eternally Stylish. CD.
(Label: El, Cat.No: ACMEM109CD)

Click for large image Known as the Brazillian frank Sinatra, Dick Farney is a national institution in his home country. An outstanding singer, instrumentalist and composer who inspired the architects of Bossa Nova. Included here are nineteen tracks culled from impossibly rare long out of print 10" albums and 78's. The two sides of his character are present here, the crooner and the gifted jazz pianist. A welcome return for the great man.
