Nick Castro & The Young Elders - A Day Without Disaster. 10". 2007 chapter in the musical adventures of Nick Castro. This EP is a glimpse into the ever-evolving minds of NC & The Young Elders, which are dwelling somewhere between the romantic male/female duets of Richard & Linda Thompson and the exotic worldly arrangements of the Incredible String Band. With their focused sensitive touch, unusual acoustic textures, gentle wordplay and ensemble interaction The Young Elders are traversing the folk world and leaving large shoes to fill. Their latest efforts meet paths with psychedelic sirens, Turkish rain calls, celtic ghost stories and realizations of the natural world. They've created a sound where the harmonium and saz coexist with blaring electric guitars and close vocal harmonies. The Young Elders are currently comprised of members Wendy Watson, Ryan Kirkpatrick, Christof Certik (member of Winter Flowers) and guest Jeb Lipson. Though often lumped in with the "freak-folk" genre Nick Castro has been transcending such labels since most of these new folkies were still playing indie | Nick Castro & The Young Elders - Come Into Our House. CD. Some of the best modern Psychedelic folk available, Nick Castro comes from the West Coast and has put together his third album of British Isles meets the Middle East incantations. Easily his most ambitious and far reaching album so far, expect the straight forward folk of "Winding Tree", Bay Area acid raga on "Lay Down Your Arms", the psychedelic folk rock of "One I Love", organic studio Musique Concrete stylings throughout and traditional Middle Eastern music on "Attar." A compelling, absolutely essential masterpiece for the new folk movement. |
Edip Akbayram - Edip Akbayram. Dble CD. Double CD that contains one of the legends of Turkish psych-prog (along with Erkin Koray and Baris Mancho), who ingested some serious hallucinogenic substances, took the traditional music of his own country, and rocked it up, creating a totally unique sound. This is a double CD compilation of the best tracks from his first two wah-laden psych albums, making up 22 tracks and 90 minutes of music. More political (and therefore vocal- based) than Koray or Mancho, but still prone to freakouts and headfucks of the wildest order, and blessed with a dark and evil yet sonorous and vocal style. | Popi & Lakis Pappas Asteriadi - Another Sunday Gone. CD. This is, we feel, quite simply some of the most beautiful music in a folk vein ever recorded; lovely, full of feeling, yet with the yearning and melancholy that usually only veteran performers like Leonard Cohen can project into their singing... only in this case, its a little Greek girl who looks like Jean Seberg and a young Greek boy with guitar who are making this early Sunday morning music! If you like the Bulent album this same label released last year, or Nick Drake, or anything in that general vein, than this will, we think, appeal to you. Evidently, this is a key album in the Greek neo kyma ("new wave") movement of the late 1960s, which saw young songwriters take musical themes from the bouzouki music of the hashish bars, and translate them into painful, fragile, innocent poetic musings on everyday life-songs of intense longing, characterized by austere arrangements. In addition to the album, there are seven bonus tracks which appear to be some of Asteriadis singles, as well as a track written by famous composer Manos Hadjidakis for a film called Aliki, My Love. Liner notes are all too brief, but they include memories of her early career by Asteriadi, as well as a couple of paragraphs on the neo kyma movement. |
Hammer Horror - Curse Of The Mummy's Tomb OST. CD. Carlo Martelli's orchestral soundtrack to Hammer's "The Curse Of The Mummy's Tomb" which was released in 1964, directed by head Hammer honcho Michael Carreras and starred Terence Morgan, Ronald Howard and Jeanette Howard. Excellent 20 page full colour booklet included, containing detailed liner notes and tons of images from the movie. | Hammer Horror - Blood From The Mummy's Tomb OST. CD. The atmospheric soundtrack to what lurks surely within Hammer's all time Top 10 films- 1971's "Blood From The Mummy's Tomb". This was the film that attempted to drag Hammer kicking and screaming inton the Seventies- set in the present day and starring Andrew Keir (deputising for a recently widowed Peter Cushing), James Villiers, Rosalie Crutchley, Hugh Burden, Mark Edwards, George Colouris, James Cossins, David Jackson and the most beautiful woman to ever wear a velvet furlined coat and kneeboots, Valerie 'Hai Karate' Leon. Needless to say, the music- composed by Tristam Cary and full of the mystery and terrors of the Middle East- is superb. Excellent 20 page colour booklet included. DUN- DUN- DURRRR!!! |
Fikret Kizilock - Fikret Kizilock. CD. Collection of singles by Turkish protest singer much-beloved by young musicians in the underground scene in Tukey, but virtually unknown anywhere else; Fikret started his career playing electric guitar for Cahit Oben Dörtlüsü, which led to appearances in the Golden Microphone song contests that also spotlighted the talents of Erkin Koray, Mogollar and the brothers Hür El; Kizilok frequently collaborated with Bülent Ortaçgil , and no surprise it was Fikret’s involvement with prominent folk poets as a result of their shared interest in traditional Anatolian folk music which was the foundation of his storied solo career; the fifteen tracks included here (all from 1970-1974) sport some heavy grooves (‘Leylim, Leylim’, ‘Gözlerinden Bellidir’, ‘Gün Ola Devran Döne’, and the fuzz-guitar heavy ‘Koyverdin Gittin Beni’), but also tantalizes with moody, introspective musings in an Eastern vein (‘Akyin Vari, Akyin’, ‘Haberin Var Mi, and the sitar-laced ‘Köroglu Daglary’. Booklet has notes about the Altin Microphon contests, lyrics, and photos. | Edip Akbayram - Edip Akbayram. 2-LP Box Set. The second album of Music From The Lonely Planet, based on the famous guide books of the same name. The sounds they brought back were woven into the series by eight composers to relate a backdrop for the series. From the Miao women of South West China to the Berbers of West Africa, special performances from a multiplicity of cultures flavoured the series soundtrack to create music that is, itself, a journey around the Lonely Planet. |
Churchills - The Churchills (plus Bonus Tracks). CD. One of the top 10 psych albums of all time (fact). Only released in Israel in 1969, this is an incredible psych fest with superb tripped out songs in English, amazing multi-layered, phased freaked out acid guitar solos, weird effects and exotic arabian instruments. Genuine Middle Eastern psych. The band only made one album, but what an album and not only that this version has 9 bonus tracks including the great pre-album single "Too Much In Love To Hear" | Ilhan Mimaroglu - Agitation. CD. A reissue of two out-of-print albums of "agitprop" electronic music from mysterious and controversial Turkish composer and Princeton/Columbia electronic music scene pioneer. Cut between 1968 and 1975, you get Tract-a scrambled mash-up peppered with spunky electronic bursts, looped radio ads, the soulful and defiant vocals of Turkish singer Tuly Sand, and the go-golicious backing jams of psych group Topsy Turvey Moon along with To Kill A Sunrise, a wild, uncompromising orgiastic electro-dirge for those who are murdered by the lackeys of the ruling class. The collection is closed by the more subdued "La Ruche." Remastered from the original tapes and packaged with the original liner notes. Oh Yes! |
Edip Akbayram & Dostlar - Nedir Ne Degildir. CD. A fresh take on Anatolian rock from the progressively minded Edip Akbayram. Tracks on this, his second LP, were recorded between 1975-76 and feature wonderfully strange keyboard washes and arrangements loaded with wah-wah fuzz guitars and (if ours ears aren't deceiving me) wah-wah sax! The powerful swirling vocals of Akbayram mesh well with funked-up drums, a tough rock sound and folk instrumentation. Keyboards and arrangements were created by Murat Ses (Mogollar). Possibly the most important non-Erkin Koray, 3 Hur El, or Mogollar album to come from Turkey in the seventies; and that's saying something! Also includes a 12-page booklet with lyrics and photographs. | Kuljit Bhamra - Burning At Melting Point. CD. Nineteen tracks from perhaps the most inspiring and influential musician, composer and producer on the British Asian music scene.Known for his truly breathtaking performances as on-stage percussionist in Lloyd Webber’s hit musical Bombay Dreams. Kuljit was responsible for spearheading the Bhangra movement and has composed and produced over 2000 songs to date.He has worked, both independently and collaboratively on film scores including the soundtrack for Bhaji On The Beach, Bend It Like Beckham and appearances in The Guru, Four Feathers and Wings Of A Dove. This wealth of musical experience and passion is brought to you in this 2004 debut album.A rich fusion of east and west to chill your mind |
