Led by the flawless songwriting team of Andy McMaster and Nick Garvey, and featuring the scorching guitar playing of Bram Tchaikovsky, the Motors (so named because they likened their music to the thrum of an engine) were one of the brightest hopes of the late 70s- and this album shows why. Put simply, the second album from Messrs McMaster, Garvey, Tchaikovsky and Slaughter is nothing short of a pop-rock masterpiece: sadly for punk purists the sight of the frontmen toting their guitars was now more often replaced by them standing at their twin keyboards a la Sailor, but the rest of the British public sat up and noticed great pop when they saw it, hence the massive success of hit singles 'Airport' (often misheard as "F Off") and 'Forget About You' (best remembered for being uncannily similar to the 'Grandstand' theme) Elsewhere album tracks like 'Mamma Rock N Roller' 'Breathless' and 'Sensation' retained the uptempo crunch of the band's debut, but on the whole this was the band's bid for pop immortality, and if they hadn't elected to put their own photo on the cover (they were actually considered so bad-looking the sleeve was later altered!!) they might just have got there, as the songs are brilliant and producer Mutt Lange brings them out in technicolour- something he would also manage for Graham Parker, the Boomtown Rats, AC/DC and eventually Def Leppard. The Motors' third and final album (by which the band were down to a duo shorn of Tchaikovsky and Slaughter) is their furthest stylistically from their punk origins (showing how far a band can progress in three short years), their most accomplished achievement, a symphonic pop masterpiece that matches the best of them. Originally consisting of eight tracks (among which are the frenetic 'Metropolis' and 'Here Comes The Hustler', the edgy title track and the evil-sounding 'Modern Man') the album now has a full compliment of seventeen, some of which are alternate mixes of tracks from all three albums, the others ('Time For Make Up' 'Crazy Alice' and 'Love Round The Corner' either appearing on the compilation "The Motors' Greatest Hit" or not at all!! This should have been the album that led them to the next level: sadly the band capitulated soon afterwards, but left us this masterpiece to admire.
