Multi-instrumentalist Kooper joins forces with youthful guitarist Shuggie Otis here on this follow up to 1968's Kooper Sessions album. There isn't an ounce of waste on these seven bluesy jams (proper songs and instrumentals) with Kooper's experience perfectly juxtaposing Otis' genius and energy (he was only fifteen at the time of recording) and the rest of the band solidly in support. Released in 1970, ths edition has been repacked and remastered.
1972 release from former Zombie Rod Argent's pop / prog outfit. At times, the prime cuts on this release are very reminiscent of Zombies at their peak ("Be My Lover, Be My Friend"), but the relatively new group clearly showed their class with numbers like thirteen minute closer "Pure Love" with members Russ Ballard and Jim Romford really coming to the fore here. Incorporating elements of classic rock, prog and classical, it sounds like the album the group wanted to make rather than the album that would succeed commercially. Repacked and remastered with five bonus tracks.
The former Steve Miller Band's man's debut album. Hard to find when it first came out in '76, it highlights Sidran's jazz roots and shows off what the man can do with a full blown orchestra and some superb musicians (Peter Frampton, Boz Scaggs and Charlie Watts.) A real gem of it's time. Eleven tracks, including: "My Wife", "Alexander's Rag Time Brand", "Racine Bovine" and "Spread You Wings."
Originally released in 1970 and unavailable until this re-issue. This was the first post Janis Joplin album though she contributed backing vocals to this album.Nick Gravenites (Electric Flag) also played on this psychedelic rock album and the release contains excellent liner notes from original member Sam Andrews.
Killer live set from 1966, featuring Janis Joplin, this CD has been re-mastered and re-packaged under the supervision of original band member David Getz, who also annotated the set.Since the original release a previously unreleased track "Hall of the Mountain King" - a psychedelic stage favourite of the day - has been included and is a great illustration that there was more to BIG BROTHER than being Janis' backing band.
The second of the post Janis Joplin releases originally released in 1971 on Columbia and now on CD for the first time.Everything on this album is a fine example of San Francisco rock ,and the three instrumentals "Last Band on Side One," "Maui," and "Promise Her Anything" show the band members are real musicians, psychedelic journeymen with vision.
Legendary roots rock band from Los Angeles via Downey CA return to the studio with a brand new line up but with the same take on their style of "American Music". Original vocalist Phil Alvin is still leading the charge backed up by original Blasters bassist John Bazz and joined by LA stalwart Jerry Angel on drums and loval legend Keith Wyatt on lead guitar. Named after the lucky numbers favoured by working people in the days of the depression in their attempts to win the lottery.
Fantastic new US live album from the original Blasters line-up expanded into a 2CD set for its European release. The 2 CD set features a number of extra titles and two live titles by the current band who recently released a great new studio album. Live on home turf this is the "American Music" group at their finest. Dave Alvin and Phil Alvin together one more time. Guests on this recording include Sun Records rockabilly legend Sonny Burgess and Chicago blues hero Billy Boy Arnold.
1994 from one of the finest instrumental combo and backing group in the world. Seventeen years after their last release, the group show off their incredible musical precision, like they had never been away. Never showy, they skillfully work their way through these twelve mid tempo tracks. Remastered and repacked with new liner notes.
The Funk legend returns with a brand new album based around the festive season. Featuring guests Snoop Dogg, Bobby Womack and Blackbyrd McNight and Bernie Worrell, Collins spices up nine classic Christmas numbers and introduces four new ones to the mix. Don't worry, it really isn't your typical Christmas album but gold old fashioned Funk in the style that only Bootsy knows how to make.
The Bottle Rockets have been making some of the most incisive, hip and eclectic American music of the past ten years. Here is their eighth album, following on from the highly successful Songs Of Sahm (a tribute to Doug Sahm) an exciting fusion of Southern boogie, country - folk and crunching rock. Produced in three short weeks to capture on record their raw live shows, by Jeff Powell at the Ardent Studios in Memphis. Includes: "Better Than Broken", "Mountain To Climb", "Suffering Servant" and "Happy Anniversary."
The welsh rocker's album from '72, now with two bonus tracks. Recreating the late '50's early '60's rock sound (such as the wall of sound) to great effect, this is an album of rock n roll classic covers made almost entirely by Dave on his lonesome. Features covers of Chuck Berry, Phil Spector written tracks, The Everly Brothers and less well known rock n roll numbers. Special guest Nick Lowe appears on some of the tracks. Includes: "Da Doo Ron Ron", "A Shot Of Rhythm And Blues", "Leave My Woman Alone" and "She's My Baby."
Two albums together on CD for the first time. Dave Mason's eponymous second solo album turned in a strong pop rock vibe over it's nine tracks (including a Jimi Hendrix inspired cover of "All Along The Watchtower"). 1973's "It's Like You Never Left" features Stevie Wonder, Graham Nash and George Harrison in support. Repackaged, remastered and with new liner notes.
Brand new album from Detroit-based rock'n'roll band that do not under any circumstances play garage revivalist rock!!! About time too. Instead, what we have is a dirty Americana sound somewhee between Exile-era Stones, Sweetheart-era Byrds, and Grant Lee Buffalo. And none of this moping, shambling misery that people think country rock consists of in the post-Ryan Adams era, Raunch from the ranch!!
Having recently been fired by the Allman Brothers in 2001 (the band that he set up himself!), Dickey quickly got back into the saddle with this good time swinging, blues and New Orleans R&B group. These are his acclaimed twenty first century albums.
Previously un-released live recordings and re-mastered rare studio recordings from the band's 1980 album featuring players from the heyday of the S.F. 'psychedelic' era. Features Pete Albin (Big Brother), John Cipollina (QMS), Spencer Dryden (Jefferson Airplane), Robert Hunter (Grateful Dead), Barry Melton (Country Joe) & Merl Saunders (Garcia Band).
Moving in from his visionary use of atmospheric synth sounds in the 70's and 80's, Gary Wright adds African and Brazillian references for this 1995 ten track release. Guest musicians include Terry Bozzio on drums, Richard Siviera on guitar and George Harrison. This release features a bonus DVD that contains rare footage of Wright and Harrison performing together.
2000 album by the former Spooky Tooth keyboardist. As with most of his later releases, the singer songwriter has embraced a very mellow, refective vibe and incorporates elements of eastern instrumentation. Unavailable fro Special guests on this ten tracker include Jeff Lynn and L Shankar.
A collection of previously unreleased recordings from the late, great ex-Byrd.Most of the songs were intended for a follow up album after "So Rebellious A Lover" that never materialised. This release contains many previously unseen photos of Gene along with his sometime collaborator, Carla Olson.
Originally a spin off band from Frank Zappa's Mothers Of Invention, this is the first time on CD for this 1972 album. A rather short lived Hard Rock outfit that, after their manager Russ Regan left, were more interested in getting drunk than making any more records. Their rowdy behaviour quickly led to them being banned from the offices of their record label and subsequently being dropped. Featuring the talents of Tjay Contrelli (Love), Jimmy Carl Black, Denny Walley (Captain Beefheart) and Bunk Gardner.
Big riffs and massive grooves are the hallmarks of Gov't Mule's career and this unique compilation covers the band's work for the Capricorn label.Covering the albums "Dose",Life Before Insanity", "Live With A Little Help From My Friends Vols 1 & 2 and rare and hard to find material.Essential stuff and not only for the stunning guitar work of Warren Haynes it's also a treat for all fans of heavy blues, stoner grooves and good old Southern fried rock'n'roll.
At last!!! After a long absence (partially to the death of founder member Allen Woody), Southern boogie blues muthas Gov't Mule finally unleash their beast of a new album- in Feb 2005 to be exact- on the public. And the extra good news is it's available as a midprice double CD set, with Disc 2 taken from a live radio session in Chicago, showcasing the band in the raw. "Deja Voodoo" (for 'tis the album title) will be promoted with a European tour in 2005, a treat for all fans of heavy blues, stoner grooves and good old Southern fried rock'n'roll, all featuring the fiery axework of frontman (and sometime Deadhead and Allman Brother) Warren Haynes. Gimme that whiskey!!
Excellent solo outing (and title) co-produced by the Airplane's Paul Kantner, who also performs on the album, other musicians include David Crosby, Pete Sears, David Freiberg, (who also co-produced), Gary Duncan, Jack Casady and John Barbata. This is the only Airplane/Starship spin off album that has not been previously available on CD.
2005-released studio album from one of Britain's greatest and most gifted songwriters, blessed with the voice somewhat akin to what Sam Cooke would have sounded like if he was a dodgy Essex car dealer called Jackie. All of the fire, rage and passion that made his early work so vital is still here- only now he's older, more cantankerous and full of renewed bitterness. Hence why 'Bad Chardonnay' 'She Swallows It' 'Dislocated Life' 'Chloroform' There's Nothing On The Radio' and 'Did Everybody Just Get Old?' all sound exactly like you would expect. Back to the electric rock format after a dip in the waters of folk and country, Mr Parker and his band the Figgs just go from strength to strength.
This album is produced by Marty Balin after he left Jefferson Airplane. Soon after he joined Grootna and they evolved into Bodacious. Originally released in 1971 and now on CD for the first time this is a fine slice of early 70's psychedelic rock and features "Psychedelic Legend" Greg Dewey (aka "Dewey Da Grease") plus ex Mad River and Country Joe & The Fish members. Features original artwork and fully informative booklet.
Felix Pappalardi produced live album by the Jeferson Airplane spin off group. Originally released as a double LP, the first side is dedicated to Jorma Kaukonen solo acoustic compositions while the rest is the whole band in its blues groove. This was the groups last official release. Fifteen tracks, digitally remastered.
Classic 1990 album from the Jefferson Airplane spin off band. Their first new album in a decade, it was perhaps their most commercial release. Clearly moving away from the blues groove based, Jorma Kaukonen orientated songs (although he does sparingly appear here.) Originally ignored by their large fan base, it now seems like a fine experiment in popularist music by a great set of musicians.
The group's second and third albums, together on one disc. By this point Jorma Kaukonen had found a balance between the groups jamming style and the songwriting structures he was so capable of producing. Hoppkorv however is the group concentrating on rock covers and beefing up their arrangements with keyboards and backing vocals.
Twelve track album from the indispensable country legend, remastered and repackaged. Naturally gifted, Hoyt seems to have the knack of evoking extremely evocative scenes with ease, distilling a broad sense of emotion and detail into every song. Includes: "Beelzebub's laughter", "Chase Down The Sun", "Snowblind Friend" and "On The Natural."
Now and for some years a resident of Austin, TX, the original Small Faces keyboard hero (and let's be fair, the greatest rock and roll pianist/organist) presented live with his hand picked live band, performing a set of recordings especially made for Radio KUT, the city's leading rock station. Originally only available on Ian's website in a truncated form, now here comes the full thirteen tracks- played by a stellar lineup that included Don Harvey, Jud Newcomb and ex-Spirit man Mark Andes.
Wife of the late, great Waylon Jennings, this is a very welcome return from Jessi Colter. Twenty years since her last effort, these twelve tracks are a mixure between romantic, at times beautifully yearning yet mannered and introspection; Clearly influenced by the death of her husband. Produced by Don Was and featuring Tony Joe White, her son Shooter Jennings and even Waylon, duetting with his wife on the album's centrepiece "Out of the Rain." An astonishing album, easily the best Americana album of the year. Includes: "You Took Me By Surprise", "Starman" and "The Phoenix Rises."
Solo album originally released on CBS/Epic in 1978 after the dissolution of his v.successful songwriting and performing partnership with Kenny Loggins. Appearing here on CD for the first time, 'Oasis' thankfully sounds nothing like the God-awful band of the same name, and is a quality release in the US country rock/AOR canon.
1980's release by the Quicksilver Messenger Band spin off group, featuring John Cipolina, Greg Elmore, Nicky Hopkins and Terry Dolan. The twelve track original has been expanded with a previously unreleased fifteen track live album on the second disc.
Singer and guitar virtuoso John Hammond is one of the distiguished ambassadors of the blues. His career stems right back to the days of the '60's Greenwich village folk scene, but unlike his contemporaries he initially found little chart success. His place in history is secure though, he is the only person who ever had Eric Clapton and Jimi Hendrix in his band at the same time (although only for a week) and introduced his frend Dylan to the Band. These two albums were released in 1971 and 1972, bookending his soundtrack album to the Dustin Hoffman movie "Little Big Man." Twenty tracks in total.
Available for the first time on CD, this 1980 release features the world's favourite albino blues guitarist playing his usual assortment of fast and furious licks. Remastered by the Texan guitarist himself.
Along with Jerry Garcia and John Cippolina, Jorma Kaukonen defined the guitar sound of the West Coast in the 1960's.Jorma played lead guitar on all the classic albums by San Francisco's Jefferson Airplane whom he left to form Hot Tuna a band he continues to play with today. Now released for the first time on CD Jorma's 1979 album is a unique release on which he plays acoustic guitar and accompanies himself on electric guitars.
One of the most underrated artist in the country rock / Americana scene of the '60's and '70's, this nine track album was first released in 1972 and features the first appearance of the classic country standard "Ladies Love Outlaws." Best remembered as a writer, Clayton was also a highly skilled performer in his own right, one of the original outlaws. Produced and featuring the talents of Chip Young.
The long awaited new release from one of the 'Royal Family' of North American folk rock, alongside relatives Kate and Anna Mc Garrigle and offspring Rufus and Martha. Accompanying Loudon ( whose acting career continues in earnest alongside his musical legacy) on this release are such luminaries as jazz guitar maestro Bill Frisell and supersession drummer Jim Keltner, the man behind the beats on such legendary albums as 'All Things Must Pass' and 'Tapestry'. As usual, the man's lost none of his acerbic wit or utter surrealism- check out 'Half Fist' 'Things' or 'Make Your Mother Mad' for proof. Those who loved the predecessor 'Last Man On Earth' will ove this.
No one has chronicled the absurdities and anguish of everyday life with more insight, humour and poignancy than Loudon Wainwright. A heavily mannered performance and well planned arrangements cannot disguise the heart break within the songs, the recent death of his mother holds court over the entire albums theme. Touching on loneliness, the isolation of modern life and September 11th, this 2001 album is far from cheery but at least Loudon has done his best to cover up his misery and offer a strong sense of hope on this well made thirteen track release.
CD issue at last of v.rare album from CaliMexican outfit featuring Louie Ortega of the Sir Douglas Quintet. Produced by and featuring Sir Douglas (Doug Sahm, in case anyone still hadn't cottoned on out there) himself. Four bonus tracks added not on the original, including a song featured in the Kris Kristofferson film 'Cisco Pike'.
During 1968 & 1969, The Love Affair had 4 top ten hits including the monster ';Everlasting Love' with the outstanding vocal talents of Steve Ellis. This collection contains their entire singles output for CBS plus some bonus live material and solo recordings.Informative sleeve notes round off the package.
Matthew Sweet and Susanna Hoffs of The Bangles, have joined voices incelebration of one of the most important eras in pop music. Sweet and Hoffs, eachwith a stunning and highly distinguishable voice of their own, minglemelodies and tones for new, unique harmonies that truly reflect thesounds of the time.
Tom McGuinness was and still is the original bass player with Manfred Mann and later along with Paul Jones formed the Blues Band. With Bob Dylan back in the news this mid price re-issue of a Dylan covers album is timely indeed. This album has been re-packaged and re-mastered from tapes supplied by Tom himself.
Two full length albums combined on one CD. One of the leading jam bands in the US today, largely through their dogged touring schedule, their seemingly carefree live shows and their exceptional songwriting/arranging abilities. Hard to just call just a jam band due to their deft touch at melodic turns and general playful attitude. No Doy and Tin Cars... combined give you the listener access to twenty one cracking tracks, the former being heavy on the improvisational side largely due to guitarist Chris Mazur's influence on the band in his short stay. The latter finds a sudden a glorious maturity (and proper song structure!.) This CD covers both sides of this fine group. Includes: "Spaz Medicine", "Bring You Down", "Spine Of A Dog" and "Queen Of The Rodeo."
The final album from 1973 by Mother Earth with Tracy Nelson. The band came out of Texas in the late '60's and established themselves in San Francisco releasing a string of albums for Mercury and Reprise and this final outing for Columbia. Their roots were in blues, country and gospel and Tracy Nelson's voice was their prime strength. Now available for the first time on CD.
Thirty seen track CD.For most of the early 70's NRPS were the successful off-shoot of the Grateful Dead through their association with Jerry Garcia, Mickey Hart, and Phil Lesh. Their sound was a kind of country-acid rock, twangier than the Deads. This 2 CD set rounds up all the live recordings of this period originally released through CBS and includes the whole studio albums "Brujo" and "Oh What a Mighty Time".. Includes: "Dead Flowers", "Workingman's Woman", "Goin' Around The Horn", "Strangers On A Train." and much more.
Singer/guitarist Nils Lofgren is better known for his work with Neil Young and Bruce Springsteen, but his solo work does occasionally create some crackingmoments that are worthy of merit. Featuring Graham Nash, 1+1 was first released in 1971, All Out in 73. They both are tremendous underground classics of the 70's.
Father to the Staple Sisters, "Pops" was a session blues man who played with everyone from Curtis Mayfield to Robert Johnson. Not starting his own solo career until he was in his seventies, these are his first two albums, released in the '90's. Combining soulful blues and gospel as well as religious and social commentary finds him in rude health and putting a number of his much younger contemporaries to shame.
Two albums on one CD, both released originally in '72. This is top drawer country rock that rivals the Eagles for it's consistant high quality. Genuine emotion and intelligence shine from this album of love gone wrong songs and beautiful arrangements. Two real high point for the genre from a highly underrated group. Seventeen tracks, including: "it's All On Me", "Take It Before You Go", "Leave My Heart Alone" and "Amie."
A 4 cd set covering a diverse amount of material recorded by Randy during a 4/5 year period commencing in 1979 released at a special low price.Disc 1 features the Randy California Band on the first 4 tracks then Randy is joined by fellow Spirit members JOHN LOCKE, MARK ANDES, and ED CASSIDY before we present the entire EURO AMERICAN album.Disc 2 features much previously unreleased and rare material and all tracks are produced by RANDY CALIFORNIA.Disc 3 is Spirit live from 1980 and 1981 with ED CASSIDY.Disc 4 is a bonus disc with a bunch of previously unreleased and rare material plus a live show from Scotland recorded in 1979..Remixed and remastered and housed in a good old fashioned double CD case.
At last "Alarm Clock" is now available for the first time CD. Originally released in 1971, Alarm Clock, made the Top 30 and produced a Top 20 single in "Here Comes the Sun." These recordings were Havens's commercial high-water mark. Beautiful stuff.
2004 follow up to the critical and commercially successful 'Wishing Well'. The man who opened the Woodstock festival has waited until now to cover Joni Mitchell's song 'Woodstock'. The album continues where 'Wishing Well' left off with a slightly more eastern feel. Groove Armada guest on the album which also contains another evocative Dylan cover 'All Along The Watchtower'.
Remastered from the original master tapes this is classic Richie Havens from 1970. Soulful US protest folk with a spiritual feel that has a timeless beauty. Excellent songs featured include "Open Our Eyes", "Ring Around The Moon", "Prayer" and "It's All Over Now Baby Blue".
Astonishing 2002 studio album from Richie Haven's with a heart stopping version of Pink Floyd's "On the Turning Away". This is an excellent comeback album, inspirations and emotions run deep throughout . US soulful folk with meditational vibes and eastern sounds. Beautiful.
1958 album from the eccentric rock n roll performer, now with thirteen bonus tracks. Hawkins seems positively demented as he sings, threatens wildly, screams, grunts and groans, and sounds utterly demonical in reclaiming the lady or whatever as his own, as he does here again and again. His first and possibly best long player, this is an essential starting block for one of thegodfathers of rock n roll. Includes: "Take Me Back To My Boots And Saddle", "There's Something Wrong With You (Alternate Take)", "There's Something Wrong With You" and "Voodoo."
The SONS OF CHAMPLIN are one of San Francisco's more durable bands and this album was originally released in 1973 and is now available for the first time on CD. Essentially a loose jazz-rock and soul influenced band with a sound that eluded commercial success, but has now been picked up by many of the up and coming bands in the American JAM BAND scene. The band are still active to this day and have recently released a live album on the Grateful Dead's own label
Debut solo album recorded by former vocalist/keyboardist/leader of Sons Of Champlin in 1978 for Epic, which could have led to a burgeoning solo career had he not, of course, replaced the late Robert Lamm in Chicago- which of course made him a household name, but killed off any chances of an extracurricular career!! This is a very 'LA' album and as such features the cream of that city's soft rock talent- all the members of Toto, Ray Parker Jr (when he was still a credible sessioneer), Daryl Hall, Michael McDonald. . .white pianos, baseball jackets and neon-lit apartments aplenty.
Double live CD with 28 tracks from the archives of the late Randy California recorded between 1989 & 1996.The line up features Ed Cassidy on drums. Includes storming versions of "Fresh Garbage","Uncle Jack","I Got A Line on You", "All Along the Watchtower","Life Has Just Begun" and many, many more.
Released for the very first time from the vaults of the Randy California esate 28 previously unreleased recordings of mostly unreleased songs.Randy California displays his guitar talents on long instrumentals and excellent new material that never saw the light of day. Randy is joined by Scott Monahan and Ed Cassidy on these recordings.
One of the classic bands of the 60's and 70's reformed with the classic line up of Gary Wright, Mike Kellie and Mike Harrison to perform a few gigs in their native Germany. This was to pay their respects to deceased bass player Greg Ridley who had passed earlier that year. This album captures the emotion and celebratory atmosphere of the night, it was an expereince the group enjoyed so much that they are planning a whole European tour as a result. Featuring "That Was Only Yesterday", "Hangman Hang My Shell On A Tree" and "Sunshine Help Me."

Fast becoming a firm favourite of fans of 'Southern Rock', the Steepwater Band are based on the Steepwater ranch (yes they all live there) in Chicago, Illinois- not actually in the South, admittedly, but still near enough for the influences of The Allmans and Skynyrd to seep through, alongside their own Chicago blues and the Brit sounds of Cream and Free they grew up on. This is actually the earlier of their two early '00s releases, although it was released after 'Dharmakaya'. For fans of Black Crowes, Gov't Mule, and others of that ilk. Pardner. . .
This is the latest US band to be garnering great reviews on the American festival circuits. In the tradition of "jam bands" such as Widespread Panic, Govt Mule, Phish, and before that of course the Grateful Dead. Comes from various roots such as folk, blues and country to forge that very American rock sound that always sounds polished. But also wields the influence of spontaneity and improvisation. Well worth checking out.
First two albums by the former New York Doll, first released in 1980 and '81. Continuing the lighthearted '50s rock & roll sound of his former band, there is plenty of rowdy numbers and sing along tracks here, He downplays the 50s vibe of his debut for his sophomore effort and embraces the new wave scene with equal enthusiasm. He's backed by a cracking band The Teardrops for this change in direction.
Debut solo release from the Gov't Mule main man Warren Hayne (recently voted 23rd best guitarist in the world by Rolling Stone magazine!). This 16 song set features Haynes penned classics along with covers of Radiohead/U2 and The Grateful Dead and ends with an incredible collaboration with the South African legend Vusi Mahlasela. Recorded at the Bonnaroo festival in front of 80,000 fans the album marks a historic moment for one of the pillars of the American music scene.
