Charlie Whitehead - Anthology 1969 - 73. CD.
(Kent - CDKEND 261)
The name Charlie Whitehead has near-legendary status in R&B collector circles, and this CD is the first-ever compilation devoted to his work with Swamp. All of it was cut during soul’s golden age, mostly in the American South. And all of it treads a similar path to Swamp’s own trailblazing recordings from the same era, making it a must for anyone who enjoys songs about love, sex, adultery, the folly of American politics, police prejudices, more sex, black-American pride, the stupidity of white supremacy, Blaxploitation movies and, yes, even more sex. Our compilation contains the contents of two whole albums, plus an assortment of rare singles that never made it to LP when first released. Virtually none of these recordings have been reissued on CD before. Kent and the productions of Swamp Dogg are collectively a recipe for success and we’re sure that "Songs To Sing" will waste no time in achieving similar results to our recent CDs by Doris Duke and Irma Thomas, both of which draw largely on the same musical resources. | ![]() |

Dave Godin's Deep Soul Treasures - Vol. 4- Various Artists. CD.
(Kent - CDKEND 230)
Godinesque may well be a new adjective in our language, but it aptly describes this latest volume of Deep Soul Treasures in which Dave has made yet another eclectic selection, combining old favourites with an alluring assortment of left-field gems. In latter years, Deep Soul has become synonymous with ballads, but Dave originally coined the term to apply to songs deep in passion and intensity of delivery rather than to reflect tempo, so don't expect a session of emotive ballads - though these are generously represented here. This volume combines equal measures of familiarity and obscurity and the net result is a no compromise compilation of outstanding, classic and rare Deep Soul sides...the ultimate in American soul music.Includes a lavish booklet in the finest Deep Soul Treasures’ tradition, wholly resplendent with copious label reproductions, memorabilia, and of course Dave’s erudite and supremely informative notes. |

Doris Duke - I'm A Loser - The Swamp Dogg Sessions... And More. CD.
(Kent - CDKEND 242)
Doris Duke "I'm a Loser" is considered by many - including the late Dave Gobin - to be the greatest deep soul album of all time. After the tease of the stupidly limited Japanese CD reissue in the early 1990s we finally have, thanks to Kent, a solid catalogue reissue, and this being Kent it's a little bit special! Featuring both of Doris' Swamp Dogg produced albums and the first reissue - in 36 years - of both sides of her rare US Jay Boy single (originally released as Doris Willingham). And if that aint enough for you, how about sleevenotes which include the legendary Swamp Dogg's own reminiscences of the sessions?! Sound good? Yep, me too. |

Double Shot Of Soul - Various. CD.
(Kent - CDKEND 238)
First ever collection dedicated to the R&B and soul output of one of L.A.'s best-known indies in the late 1960s, Double Shot. Though the label hit paydirt with the 1966 garage rock hit ‘Psychotic Reaction’ by Count Five, the bulk of their catalogue was in fact soulful in nature. Much of the material, from artists including Kent & The Candidates, Foxy and the Real Thing, has an appealing funky edge. Also includes The Invincibles and the Georgia Prophets. Many tracks feature the songwriting and production prowess of Maurice Rodgers, the label’s in-house R&B staffer.Virtually everything on Double Shot Of Soul is making its debut on compact disc. Additionally, meticulous tape research through the labels vaults has thrown up superlative unissued material. Label owner Hal Winn and some of the acts, including Bobby Freeman, contribute to an extensive liner note that details the history of this interesting and little-heralded soulful outfit. | ![]() |

Olympics - Welcome Home. CD.
(Kent - CDHP 018)
The kings of the dance crazes in the late '50's / early '60's, this album takes the group into a more soulful territory for this 1966 release. Six of the tracks are soul remakes of their earlier Rock n Roll hits, while the other six are new cuts. Featuring all of the original members of the '50's line up (minus the one who had died), this is a combined effort to take their rock numbers into new territories and attract a new bred of listener. The remakes retain all the energy and spirit of the originals as well they might, having been produced by the same team who were responsible for their first versions. The soul cuts maintain the same level of excitement, many were among the first big records in the early days of the Northern Soul scene. | ![]() |

UK Sue Story - Vol 4. CD.
(Kent - CDKEND 258)
It’s well known that UK Sue’s A&R guru Guy Stevens always intended to compile and issue a fourth vinyl volume of 'The Sue Story'. Now, just 39 years after the original Volume 3 found its way into record stores and by genuine popluar demand, Ace and Kent have further honoured Guy’s visionary A&R policy by putting our own spin on things, with a Volume 4 that brings together a bunch of rarities all originally released in the UK on Sue that may well have formed that core of Guy’s own ‘wish list’ for a fourth vinyl instalment. The CD features many artists whose names will, for UK soul and R&B collectors, at least be indelibly associated with the familiar yellow and red imprint. It also features many extremely obscure acts whose repertoire took an extra amount of tracking down, but who we’re extremely glad to have on board alongside the more familiar names. The featured repertoire ranges from Chicago R&B to Big City Soul, from stomping rockers to the deepest Southern Soul from the Stax studios all totally reflective of the catholic tastes and A&R policy of the late, great Guy S. Around a third of the tracks have never been reissued on CD or LP! Meticulously mastered from the best available sources, and lovingly annotated by UK R&B journalist and UK Sue obsessive Mike Atherton, this is as compelling a collection of truly great 60s soul and R&B as you’ll find anywhere. | ![]() |
