Janet Holmes - The Road To The West. CD. (Market Square - MSMCD129)

Debut 2004 solo album from the Irish singer songwriter which has a guest appearance by fiddler Martin Hayes and most of the songs here are originals written by guitarist Colin Harper. Holmes also co-wrote one of the tracks, the melancholy Gone. Her voice is a supple, confident instrument, strongest on downbeat tracks like Harper’s The Fields of July although her bluegrass-flavoured cover of the Smiths’ "How Soon Is Now" has to be heard.Housed in a slipcase.

Kevin Ayers - Still Life With Guitar. CD. (Market Square - MSMCD112)

Ayers cultivated a taste for the bohemian lifestyle early, even before he became part of the Canterbury folk scene in the early '60s. This is a later re-issue of his 1992 album. Acoustic guitar driven folk with a timeless quality. Improved booklet with comments from Kevin, plus 3 bonus tracks including an unreleased song 'Running In The Human Race' An excellent addition to any folk collection.

This slice of cult Canterbury Scene pop psych first came out in 1974. Led by Lady June, it features Pip Pyle, Brian Eno and Kevin Ayers as guest performers, Ayers also contributes songs and prouction duties. The basis of this album came from June's lively performances of her poetry in Amsterdam and her trip to the hippy scene in Mallorca. Here she met Ayers and an album of eccentric, original songs and acoustic soundscapes followed. This is a brilliant, timeless album filled with a true sense of invention.

Luminos - Seize The Day. CD. (Market Square - MSMCD115)

Driving symphonic progressive rock like contemporary acts such as Jadis, IQ and Mostly Autumn,while their influences are taken from classic Brit prog, Camel, Caravan etc.The album starts with the track 'Inner Self' an upbeat acoustic-based song punctuated by genre-typical guitar chiming that brings to mind Jadis or IQ whilst 'Always In My Heart' has a good old style prog ending .A greater use of keyboards, and even sax feature on the lengthy 'The Voyage' bolstering prog-rock cred. Vocalist Anni Meegan adds an Annie Wilson/Haslam-sheen to 'A Small Boy, A Bird In History' and altogether, this is a strong debut .

Formed in London in 1999 Moon Dogs are fast gaining cult status on the live circuit for their relentless, heady brew of blues rock. The band features a seasoned line-up with support from studio guests including Rod Argent (Zombies, Argent), Jim Rodford (The Animals, The Zombies, The Kinks) and Richard Smith (Fat Marrow). Band member Derik Timms (guitars,vocal) has played with Dave Edmunds, Albert Lee and George Harrison amongst others whilst Eddie Masters (bass) and Graham Walker (drums) have worked with Albert Collins, BB King and Gary Moore.

Not really 'garage', this is a hitherto unexplored aspect of UK psychedelic pop from '66 - '68. Featuring Our Plastic Dream and their wonderful "Encapsulated Marigold", other bands include: The Owl, The Jeeps, JJ Jackson and The Silence. All these acts featured Pierre Tubbs who was the creative spark behind these projects.... Great stuff!

Steve Ashley - Speedy Return. CD. (Market Square - MSMCD118)

With twelve original songs and an instrumental title track the 1975 album marks a clear change of direction without any loss of musical identity. Modal tunes mix with blues, rock, and Latin rhythms and yet the result remains distinctively English. Robert Kirby, (Nick Drake), wrote and conducted orchestral arrangements for this album (also "Stroll On") and a number of artists during the 1970s. This reissue comes with an informative 8-page booklet, including previously unpublished photographs, complete lyrics and a perceptive re-appraisal by the folk-rock authority, Karl Dallas.

Little known UK folk singer song writer/guitarist who has released albums since 1971. With a voice that is uncannily like Nick Drake and a fragile style similar to early John Martyn this album is Steve's masterpiece from 1987. Also included is a beautiful 23 minute Irish instrumental epic entitled Rhapsody from the "Swans at Coole" album. A stunning acoustic guitar journey.

Tim Rose - London Sessions 1978 - 98. CD. (Market Square - MSMCD119)

Previously unreleased tracks from studio sessions recorded by this legendary American troubadour between 1978 and 1998 in his adopted home of London.Tim Rose had a career in music that spanned 40 years, from the early 60s to his death in September 2002. Most of the songs here showcase Rose the ballad singer, not Rose the rock shouter, and demonstrate a more intimate and retrospective aspect to the man with versions of "I Started a Joke","hey Joe" and more.
