Bill Nelson - Chimera. CD. (Mercury - 9831027)

Nelson continued to move forward into unchartered territory with this, originally an EP that followed the more spiritually-oriented 'The Love That Whirls', now boosted to full album status by dint of several highly welcome bonus tracks. An attempt to return to simpler pop structure after its predecessor's esoteric bent, this was the first of Bill's collaborations with the Yellow Magic Orchestra's Yukihiro Takashi, and bears very much the stamp of that band, as well as featuring Mick Karn of Japan on fretless bass. Nelson's masterful guitar playing returns very much to the fore here on the track 'The Real Adventure' but on tracks like 'Glow World' and 'Everyday Feels Like A New Drug' he was moving further toward what would eventually be known as dance music. One of the few truly 'progressive' (in the literal sense of the word) musicians around.

Bill Nelson - Quit Dreaming And Get On The Beam. CD. (Mercury - 9831025)

Nelson's third solo album (or second, depending on which way one looks at it) released in 1981 and salvaged from the sessions for the aborted second Red Noise project. By now firmly moving in a new wave direction (some might say that BeBop instigated it in the first place), this was a collection of uptempo, rocky, spiky and angular songs that yielded another almost-hit ('Do You Dream In Colour'?) and leaned toward the burgeoning electronic pop scene that was developing in the UK, particularly the work of Gary Numan. However, Nelson has never been anybody's copycat: at its best, the album (on tracks such as 'Living In My Limousine' 'False Alarms' and 'Youth Of Nation On Fire') sounds like the work of a true innovator, and one whose restless creativity would soon lead him to tire of this scene as he had the glam-prog of BeBop Deluxe, and move on to his next venture. Remastered with many bonus tracks.

Bill Nelson - The Love That Swirls (Diary Of A Thinking Heart). CD. (Mercury - 9831026)

The follow-up to the vastly underrated 'Quit Dreaming And Get On The Beam' from this highly iconoclastic and individual Yorkshire musician, who has traversed a greater width of musical ground in his 35- plus years as a musician than at least ten so-called 'legendary artists' put together. Here, Nelson's spiritual and esoteric influences were beginning to show (not in a tacky 'finding religion' kind of way, but more in the Gnostic/mystic style that would also be the path of Current 93's David Tibet). He always had employed songtitles that lesser mortals would find pretentious, but now they were called things like 'Flaming Desire' (another almost hit single) 'When Your Dream Of Perfect Beauty Comes True' 'Empire Of The Senses' 'He And Sleep Were Brothers' and best of all 'The Crystal Escalator In The Palace Of God Department Store'- making no bones about his motivations. This subsequently became the album that split the fan base, but which also indicated that Nelson's strange musical journey still had far to go. Now remastered with several bonus tracks.

Favourite Sons - That Driving Beat/Walkin Walkin Walkin. 7". (Mercury - MF911)

Mega-rare 1965 R'n'B stomper with some killer guitar playing. On a side note: anyone who mispells "walking" three times in a row is clearly dangerously unhinged and is unlikely to be the favourite son of any good spelling mother. Soulful Psych or Psychedelic Soul, whichever, this is a stunning and ridiculously hard to find freakbeat recording released in 1969 by the UK group formerly known as "Gary Freeman & The Contours" and then "The Anglicans" (before they settled on the rather confusing "Moving Finger" title!).
